Star Citizen's latest Free Fly weekend is going on now.

Looking for something new to play this weekend and don't want to spend any money? The ambitious PC space sim Star Citizen is holding another Free Fly weekend--and it starts today; right now, in fact. Now through August 27, you can play the game completely free.

A section of the game is playable, as well as a number of ships such as the MISC Prospector, the Drake Dragonfly, the Aegis Avenger Titan, and the Drake Cutlass Black. In terms of the gameplay areas, you'll have a chance to try out some of what was added in the Alpha 3.2 update including multiplayer support for 50 people simultaneously. Also new to the game in Alpha 3.2 are more armour suits, a Kiosk system that lets you purchase items with in-game currency, and more weapons. You can see the full Alpha 3.2 patch notes here.

For more on the Free Fly weekend, head to Star Citizen's website here. The Free Fly weekend was announced as part of Gamescom 2018 this week, where developer Cloud Imperium Games held "BarCitizen" events where developers drank booze with fans.

Star Citizen is the most successful crowdfunded project in history. By the developer's latest count, the game has brought in an astonishing $192 million in funding.

So they're still in alpha phase? Looks like the game will really never be released.

$192 million down the toilet. Well done guys.

So what can you actually do right now in the game? What state is it in?

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@Ice-Cube: you can explore one star system, Stanton, but even that is missing some planets still. you can do mining, trading, fighting and some missions.

they will start adding new star systems with a more rapid pace, once they get all the server features up and running so that they can handle it all.

it's worth a try at the moment imo, but not yet in a state where you could play it extensively.

@groowagon: Appreciate the reply, I’m still looking forward but have had it on the back burner and haven’t been up to date for a while now.

Well I hope they do get it into a state where we can play it a bit more instead of just trying out modes and features. May give it a shot.

And hey, if you like it, for only 17 easy installments of $4,999.95 you can get regular, unlimited access to the game and your very own jpg of a ship!

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@Xylymphydyte: you get full game access for $44, and if you want the singleplayer game too, the combo is $70.

but what ever. keep on hating.

@groowagon: But you just said above that the game is basically a demo, devoid of the majority of the content. I was just outlining what it costs to actually get a whole game. Unfortunately it won't actually be done until you're long dead of old ages, also unfortunately the game license is non-transferable so your grandchildren won't be able to enjoy the first expansion without buying their own license for the low, low cost of $84,931.15 plus any applicable taxes.

Alternatively you could play Elite: Dangerous or No Man's Sky or something and actually have a game at a fraction the cost.

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@Xylymphydyte:

too bad those games are bad. i've tried both of them. i'd rather not spend money on them. but yeah, at least they have full content in comparison.

yes, Star Citizen is CURRENTLY devoid of most of the content. You should educate yourself of the concept of crowd funding. you are not paying for the CURRENT content only.

and yes, i'm aware that there are risks involved with this game, but i'm happy to fund such epic project. at least someone is trying.

@groowagon: If by trying you mean scamming people out of huge piles of money and providing a half broken tech demo, sure. I'm very familiar with crowd funding, if you were you wouldn't have been giving them any money considering only a very small percentage of them ever succeed.

If you REALLY want to know what's going on, why don't you take a look at all the fancy new stuff Chris Roberts has acquired, the houses, cars and boats, all the while missing his 2014 launch window by four years with $150 million in funds. There's a solid reason everyone calls it Scam Citizen.

@Xylymphydyte: you're probably that guy who spent like 3,000 on it and got salty because he never read the T&C's, thus never getting his money back.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: Sorry, no, I haven't contributed to any crowdfunded effort. I like to buy a product, not a prayer.

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: then you can't really say anything then can you, you're basing your opinion on many other seperate opinions. You can't even do clear math, you honestly think everyone that bought into this has to pay again with each patch, that must be the thought proccess if you think people are paying over £80 for it 😂😂

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: Nah man, literally no one spends excessive amounts on the game, that's why none of these ships are available for purchase or anything. It's not like they didn't introduce a $27,000 pack that you have to previously have spent $1000 on to even view, AT THE REQUEST of the userbase. None of that happened did it?

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: I've gone to buy it many times (but still haven't) and I have only seen the £1,000 option, even then nobody is forcing anybody to buy that, who are you to dictate what people can waste their money on anyway? Did you create Star Citizen?

Just because you know what these crowdfunded games end up like doesn't mean others shouldn't keep their faith, if it wasn't for the lawsuit this game would actually be making progress instead of delays lol

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: I think that calls for a full 'lmao'. Are you really saying that it's okay to scam people so long as they can keep believing it's not a scam? That predatory marketing of things that don't exist is okay, especially ones where you can never get your money back if it DOES go tits up and fail?

Crowd funding on the whole is less than a coinflip's chance of success.

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: clearly you only take the information you want, I'm bored of you already.

You're not looking out for anybody, you're belittling them instead. Good luck with the rest of your shitty one sided life.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: No no no. You made a baseless accusation, claimed I didn't understand basic math or the state of crowdfunding or what it meant, and then when I present evidence and dismantle every aspect of your very existence you claim I'm the one that ignores evidence and am boring? YOU'RE the one who ignores evidence and is boring. Projection/10. Try again later.

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: whatever you say, I'm the one reading an entire comment and not just a few lines, you don't even answer questions. Now, please, go and find some more Star Citizen articles to prey on, I'm pretty sure you might even find one about why its taking so long to finish if you look hard enough, oh I'm sorry you're too busy stalking the employee's aren't you....🤔

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say now. Evidence is evidence. You have to present counter evidence if you want to argue against it in any effective fashion.

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: you really are a fool, welcome to the court room everyone, the judge wants evidence as to why you all bought Star Citizen?

Um, because you all liked the idea and thought it looked pretty cool? Dude, go and get a fucking life, you clearly have no girlfriend, no console or PC, no job and probably no parents either. Your life must be that cold and bland to try and imitate a courtroom. You don't have evidence really though do you? You have the opinions of some people who didn't exactly enjoy their experience 😂

Your life is so boring you're still replying even after telling me I'm the one who ignores evidence and is boring, this is like a school kide argument, its not me its you, grow the eff up, bro, its a fucking game, people can buy whatever the **** they want.

@sephirothswing: You're still replying, friendo :^)

Avatar image for sephirothswing

@Xylymphydyte: to point out just the hypocritical fool you are, and you've done it perfectly, you've just repeated my words and your own over-and-over again, with no real reasoning at all other than you think its wrong for people to pay for a product the enjoy 😂

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: This all started with a joke. You're the one who took nothing really serious and decided to defend the game. I also don't like seeing people scammed out of money whether they like it or not. Am I calling for legislation to prevent people buying it? No, but I am saying that people should research an incomplete product before it's done.

Speaking of using your own words, you did say it's okay for people to be scammed and to have no recourse to get their money back, so I don't know how you're claiming any sort of moral high ground here considering you advocate for fraud.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sephirothswing: I'm all for that so long as they know the risks involved. The risks involved in spending money on Star Citizen are that you almost definitely don't get what you pay for. They're half a decade late already and it's not looking like it's going to get any better.

So I mock the game publicly for the overpriced, underdelivering scam that it is whenever the opportunity arises.

Avatar image for sephirothswing
sephirothsWing

@Xylymphydyte: I'm not defending the game, I haven't even played it. I'm defending peoples decision to buy whatever they want.
