Now Playing: GS News Update: Pirate Ship Game Skull And Bones Will Have Narrative Campaign, Ubisoft Confirms

Skull and Bones was announced last week at E3 2017, and our first look at it focused only on its competitive multiplayer. We were able to go hands-on with a five vs. five mode, but it was unclear whether the game would be primarily multiplayer, or if it would also feature a single-player or story mode. Recently, Ubisoft confirmed that, in fact, Skull and Bones will have a narrative campaign.

A Ubisoft representative confirmed the news to PC Gamer but wouldn't give any specifics. "[Skull and Bones] will offer a narrative campaign which will be integrated into the game and will not be something aside of the multiplayer experience," they said. "In this campaign, players will encounter iconic characters and memorable rival pirates. More details will be shared at a later date."

The rep also said that the competitive mode shown off at the convention was just "the tip of the iceberg" for the game.

This is in line with what Ubisoft hinted at during its E3 press conference, when it said that the game would be playable either alone or in a group. Ubisoft has also said that the game will be open world, which makes me hopeful that its non-competitive mode turns out to be deep, robust, and more like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag than the E3 demo made it seem.

Skull and Bones launches sometime next year for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can check out a full multiplayer match here and watch our impressions of the game at the top of the article.

Well its good that there a campaign although I will still mainly be interested in the MP part !

The only reason I'm interested in this is because it has a narrative campaign. I will probably try the multiplayer, get squashed by the dude who has a lot more time than me to get good at it, be disappointed and then never play that part again. If it was only multiplayer, I wouldn't even consider buying it.

With that being said, I am now very excited about the potential of this game thanks to their being a narrative campaign. I hope there is an opportunity to play against "bots" as often as you like, instead of multiplayer humans.

@Smokin105: Agree completely. This is Ubisoft though, so I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

@Smokin105: I'm with you. Most of the time co-op/multiplayer is a no-go for me, but single-player gets my attention.

I like AC Black Flag but I don't care about this game and I hope you lose money on this crap.

@playstationzone: because you don't care about it you hope it fails? Screw the people who are interested in it?

@iammcgruber: Screw people who support online-only crap, like I'm 99.9% sure this will be.

@ltjohnnyrico: Yes I did and now I'm 100% sure this rotter will have forced online for it's shitty half-assed "narrative campaign".

@capocrimeboss: You should leave the salt for the Sea ... Matey !!

@capocrimeboss: glad you didn't say 100% sure, cause they've already said there's a single player narrative campaign. who doesn't have internet in 2017?

Something like Titanfall 1's "campaign," with bosses, conversations between NPCs, scripted cutscenes... Maybe bot backfill, definitely online-only...

But no land gameplay mentioned.

I'm curious if they'll delay this to add it in.

A bit of island hopping/exploration/treasure hunting between naval battles and they would have an undoubted winner on their hands, in its current (known) state maybe not so much.

@proxima1025: what you described is sea of thieves

Why they did not include LAND gameplay is beyond me... This sounded like the best game ever to me, but ONLY naval gameplay? It's gonna get real boring real fast.. Just like for honor did.

WTH was this not even mentioned at E3??? I've said ever since I played black flag that Black Flag would have been perfect if not for the present day subplot. A single player Pirate game that is similar to Black Flag? You now have my attention.

@spartanx169x: They haven't said a word about on-foot controllable player activities yet though.

@Pyrosa: Yep thats true. This is going to be a late 2018 title right? I'm cautiously optimistic. Maybe they just wanted to see what kind of reaction they would get by focusing on the MP part of the game. So we will see.
