Phoenix Wright facing WiiWare Trials and Tribulations

Capcom has been trickling its Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney detective series onto Nintendo's WiiWare service at roughly the pace of an actual court case. Today, Capcom brings its third game featuring the flamboyant defense attorney to Nintendo's online platform, leading a week of releases that also sees Photo Dojo and Earthworm Jim surface on the DSi.

Originally released for the DS in 2007, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations fared less well with critics than the first installment in the handheld series, due to its lack of innovation. Still, gamers will find five new cases to work on, in which they gather crime-scene evidence, examine witnesses, and object to inconsistencies in the prosecution's case. The game costs 1,000 Wii points ($10).

Digital Leisure's Chess Challenge represents the only other WiiWare release this week, and it will also be available to DSi owners. The 500 Wii/DSi point game ($5/$5) lets up to two players compete in the classic strategy duel, though gamers can also challenge the computer across multiple difficulty settings. Chess Challenge on the Wii also features Mii support for online play, as well as ranked leaderboards.

Elsewhere on the DSi Store, gamers can pick up Nintendo's Photo Dojo. Free to DSi owners through June 10 ($2 thereafter), Photo Dojo lets gamers take photos of themselves using the handheld's built-in cameras and then overlay them onto martial-arts brawlers. The game also lets players record their own sound effects and taunts. Up to two fighters can throw down on one system, while single-player gamers can venture forth on a beat-'em-up adventure.

Gameloft will be reviving Shiny Entertainment's heroic annelid this week, as Earthworm Jim heads to DSiWare for 500 DSi points ($5). Inspired by the classic Super NES platformer, Gameloft's installment "offers the essence and core gameplay of the original." Gameloft's Earthworm Jim also includes a facial recognition feature, in which players can smile, frown, or make other faces to accomplish in-game challenges.

Lastly, this week also sees the release of EA's Flips: The Enchanted Wood. Available for 500 DSi points ($5), the interactive children's story follows Jo, Bessie, and Fanny as they stumble upon a magical forest full of mythical creatures behind their house.
