Phantom Dust Re-Release: New Details And First Look At Gameplay

Native resolution and changes to single-player story progression.

32 Comments

Phantom Dust fans have a lot to look forward to in an upcoming remaster of the game for Xbox One and PC: it supports widescreen and higher resolutions, and it makes some key changes to the way the single-player story progresses, Polygon reports.

"The biggest thing is moving [Phantom Dust] to 16:9 and moving to [higher resolutions]. So what that basically means is that if you’re playing on Xbox One, you're running at 1080p so the game is going to render at 1080p; if you're on a PC and you’re playing at 4K resolution, the game will render its assets at 4K," Adam Isgreen, creative director for Microsoft Studios, told Polygon. You can get a first look at the remastered version of the game by watching Polygon's video below.

There's still no official release date for Phantom Dust, but Microsoft has previously said the game would come out in 2017.

Isgreen said there have been some substantial challenges in bringing the game back to life, since there was no final source code when Microsoft recovered the game's archives from Japan.

"So everything that we've been able to do in this version of Phantom Dust has been through reverse-engineering the binaries, and actually hacking and cracking the code back open again," he told Polygon.

Microsoft has made a few changes to the way Phantom Dust's single-player story works, in the hopes of getting players into the deck-building action sooner than in the original.

"If you fail three times on any mission while you're playing the campaign, you can skip it...You still get your rewards, and we're OK with that. There are some achievements that are tied to not skipping and doing challenging things, so if people just want to experience the wonderful story of Phantom Dust, that's definitely one way they can do it,” said Isgreen.

"So if people want to grind and they want to play exactly like they did when the original game came out, that is all in place. Everything about how the game works and functions is there. We really wanted to allow people to jump into multiplayer and play immediately," he added.

Our Phantom Dust review scored the original version 8.5/10. Reviewer Erik Wolpaw called it "a cross between the deck-building and card-collecting elements of Magic: The Gathering and the controls, speed, and environmental tactics of a shooter." His major complaint was that the single-player campaign took too long to get going, a problem the team behind the remaster is promising to solve.

Reverse engineered? Uh, gotta say, the potential for serious glitches sounds pretty high here.

This looks horrible compared to other remasters. It shouldn't even be called a remaster...it's a lazy port...but from what I hear, they're revealing the sequel at E3 and it looks stunning on Scorpio. You heard it here first...

@biggamerdude: But they didn't improve much. GOWIII for the PS4 is what I consider be a remaster.

@louixiii:

It isnt a remake, it is a remaster. It also isn't a lazy port. You should check out the full interview with Polygon on how they got this game running.

@louixiii:

Lol thanks.

You should seriously check out Polygons video though. I know it seems like it is a lazy port, but they did put a lot of work into it. Still would have been better as a remake though :/

@doctor_mg: They reason they didn't remake it is because they're working on the sequel

@louixiii:

That could very well be. You have any other E3 predictions?

Personally I'm thinking Halo 6 teaser trailer, Forza 7, and two exclusive IP's from third party studios. Maybe a release date for Sea of Thieves and Cuphead (finally)

@doctor_mg: That wasn't a guess...that was the truth. You of all people should know I'm connected. They'll show a Halo teaser but not sure if it's 6. They'll show Forza running on Scorpio as well as have a AR/VR reveal. They'll also announce a couple new IPs and might be bringing back another older franchise. I can't say atm, but it's nothing I'm excited for. Crackdown, Cuphead and SoT will get release dates...and that's the show.

@razorfist: I can't say atm. Don't want to get anyone in trouble but...it is an older franchise that a lot of people will be excited about...at least that what my sources tell me.

@gamingdevil800: The remake is not in active development. This is the remaster that was announced not long after the remake was put "on hold".

Good for the extremely small amount of people who played and loved the first. As for anyone else....this looks like absolute garbage and they will be lucky to hit even 100k sales.

@chiefwiggum16: Which is precisely why they needed to do the full on reboot they claimed was coming and then canceled.

@chiefwiggum16: Glad this game is also getting a PC release so those who actually appreciate all great games, from all eras, have the opportunity to enjoy it.

The graphics are abysmal. And the implementation of dlc and micortransactions! You're shooting yourself in the foot micorsoft. It literally uses the same assets from 2003!

@batmanspizza14: Well, duh. It's literally a re-release of the original. They haven't advertised the game as a remake for years now.

@LPDisturbedHU: There is no remake. The remake was essentially back-burnered into oblivion. It might as well be canceled.

@Barighm: The remake is "on hold". That's exactly how they stated it.

It might as well be cancelled, but it's not officially. The remaster was announced quietly after E3 2016 (same with Halo Wars: Definitive Edition).

It's quite sad.... I use to play this game with my friends via system link on the old original xbox... when i heard (almost a year ago) that they were making a new installment (NOT A REMAKE) i was quite thrilled because i am a lifelong PlayStation fanboy and while im not going to buy a system on one game alone, there were two other games that i wanted to play aswell, one of them was cancled , in which that game was Scalebound and now instead of creating phantom dust from the bottom up, they re-release the game which doesnt look that upscaled at all... I guess what I'm trying to say is that Microsoft is constantly shooting themselves in the "soft" area.

Way to kill a potential buyer... sad, this game was quite fun in the past, was really hoping for this game to be a new installment
