Phantasy Star Online 2's Western Release "Still Delayed," But It Is Still Coming

Sega reassures fans that the game's North American and European release has not been forgotten.

There was a one-month gap between the Japanese and North American releases of Phantasy Star Online, and about a four-month gap in the case of its Version 2 successor. Phantasy Star Online 2, the long-awaited sequel, on the other hand, was first released in Japan in July 2012 and is still not available outside of Asia. If you've begun to lose hope that the game will ever see the light of day in the West, Sega has reassured fans that it is still coming, though the company continues to refuse to say when that might happen.

Referencing the fact that it's now been a year since the official PSO2 Facebook account was last updated, a fan sent a tweet this week to Sega about the game's continued absence in the West. The official Sega account replied, saying, "PSO2 is still delayed. SEGA is currently working on bringing PSO2 to the West and will update as soon as we know more."

No Caption Provided

Insignificant as that reassurance might be, I know I'm happy to hear it as someone who adored the original PSO but, like many others, found its successors (Phantasy Star Universe, in particular) lacking.

The free-to-play PSO2 was originally slated for release on PC in Japan in 2011 before slipping until 2012. It has since been ported to Vita (last year), as well as Android and iOS (this spring)--again, only in Japan. A 2013 release for North America and Europe was announced in mid-2012, only for the game to be delayed in early 2013 without any reason (or new release window) being specified.

To date, the only region where the game has been released is southeast Asia; the game was released in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines earlier this year.

We still have no explanation for the game's absence in the West. It's not as if it's turned out to be a dud--despite recording an operating loss in the quarter ended June 30, Sega noted that PSO2 had been an especially strong performer.

After how long we've had to wait, are you still interested in PSO2? What platform would you most like to play it on? Let us know in the comments below.

so I played the japanese version of this game and am leaving a comment to what I think. Somewhat soon after PSO2 release in JP, the PS4 was announced. The game is on cross platform with Vita so I assume they want us to be able to play it on the ps4 and ps3 also. The game will need some changes for western release and I know some of the items and themes will be different, as with what has happened with the Asian Pacific version. I liked the game but for westerners, it was far too grindy. I ended up leveling by doing homework and waiting for the hour missions to pop up. I wish they would let us pay to move characters over but I know that wont happen =/ Still have hope but I hope they change some things if they are serious about release

Time is money SEGA. Tick Tock.

Been waiting for like 3 years now... SEGA already lost me with all the new releases of Sonic, Sonic of all things why that and no PSO2? The Japan version is practically done already.

A shame they didn't try this about 2 years ago when people were actually hyped for it. Quite frankly I find it to be old news.... and now have little to no interest in it.

I wouldn't say that. A lot of potential Western players have certainly forgotten about this game...

the main reason why they haven't released it is probably because of the negative reaction when asiasoft asked for an ip ban in south east asia mind you people still circumvent the ip ban and play on jp server

at this point i believe that sega does not wish to make the same mistake it made with SEA version which was allowing another company to release their game far behind the original

also their major traffic comes from all over so releasing in different parts of the world would mean placing servers in each section

which they have probably decided not to do as it would only lead to more people circumventing and complaining

especially since so many people have already spent hundred's of dollars and yen and whatever other form of currency you can come up with in pso2 that making each area have its own server would give the backlash effect and sega would lose money because no one is going to pay for anything on the servers in their area because they have already paid so much on the jp servers

at this point i believe and hope that sega is doing their own translation in each language and adding it as an option in the current jp release and just let everyone play on the servers they've been playing on

at this point sega has to look at where the money is and make good judgement based on that

Yeah they say it will be coming to NA but I don't think IF and thats a pretty BIG IF they do bring it here it will be like some time in 16-17 because i mean that was almost three years ago, that it was gonna come to the us and nothing 2015 will come and there will be nothing it will be phantasy star portable 2

Infinity all over again and more then likely it will never come over to us and then they will wanna know why no one wants to play their games there are really no good reasons why it is not out now. the only fact they can use is it would draw a lot of payers to it and the other games would not get as much attention but we all no i'ts not a money thing they would make absurd amounts of money of this game and all die hard fans of the other games would still play them and the longer they wait the more pissed their fans are gonna be if they don't hurry they will lose only other thing i can think of is that they are making sure it is up to date for us which would be great but we all know that is not gonna happen because they have never done that before and if this is what happens when they do i can see why they don't their not very good at it sad thing is i still love sega worst is when a die hard fan as to admit that hes being f over and will still keep on supporting them but oh well and hopefully we get the next one -cries in corner why you no like us NA Sega- (T-T)

Good Lord I just wanted the game. I didn't need all the bells and whistles I just wanted more of PSO. I don't understand why they didn't just deliver. I've heard so many different reasons, most of which were pretty flimsy excuses. One of the biggest is NA Sega has to approve it and isn't. Last I checked the parent company is still Sega and it was painfully obvious that there was a huge demand for this game. Note I say WAS because of there lack of speed and overall poor business sense this huge cash cow has lost quite a lot of weight. Now I honestly wouldn't blame them or even be surprised if they canceled it since they screwed up so badly in their marketing for it and pushed it back so far that, to be quite frank, nobody cares anymore. Those die hards that do won't make them nearly enough to keep the servers running and I myself have just outright stopped caring.

I won't lie if it did come over I would get it. I sadly got my hopes up when I saw a live stream of it in English but when I went to download it, from a totally English text website everything worked up until I hit the download button. The download page was blocked. I assume due to NA sega having their collective head up their anus' but it's ready. It could be brought over but NA Sega is simply holding out for "reasons" that they refuse to release because of what we already know. They screwed up and if they admit to it, most likely, there will be a lot of openings at Sega of America, but if they "delay" the reveal of their epic fail then maybe they can save their jobs for a little longer. That's the best I can figure from what I have seen.

As much as I would like to be wrong, I don't believe they are planning on any sort of western release.

It's been two years, mostly in the dark, with the latest news being "Yeah...later," with no indication of any progress being made at all. Words are cheap. If SEGA proved that they were acting on it then it would go much further for all of us.

You know what I bet it is: Sega is obsessively trying to hack-proof their online framework to prep for Western players. I don't know how bad the Eastern player base is with hacking, but I can guarantee it isn't as bad as most of the numbnuts in the US/EU. Their obsession is bad enough to have gotten me and one other person banned for life from PSU for unknowingly accepting an item that was hacked by someone else (meanwhile a lady friend got a slap on the wrist for the same "crime" because vagina - why am I not surprised?). This was a year into its release and I got to play for two weeks. I know that PSU wasn't their strongest release, but that should tell you what we have in store in terms of what moderators will do on a whim.

The kid in me wants to see this happen, but the wise man in me knows it's going to be an absolute train-wreck, the least of which is due to potential hackers. I know first hand how bad the hacking was in the original PSO, and understand their apprehension for a Western release, but Sega's overall incompetence coupled with their tyrannical obsession with "suspected" hackers is guaranteed to ruin this game for a LOT of people.

If they want to douche-proof their online game, they are going to need all the help they can get. Help that I know they aren't asking for.

**** Sega.
There's zero reason why PSO2 should have taken this long to get released in the West.
They've got time and money for more disposable Sonic titles and overpriced CoH2 DLC, but can't find effort for things that actually make them money.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I respect that you want a sonic game cause sonic was amazing. I will admit though, that sonic is falling on hard times in the recent years. I would just like to say that sega's other games are helping to keep them alive just as much as sonic is now. Bringing PSO2 to the West and the rest of the US will only help to strengthen their condition and maybe help them to raise funds towards another sonic game, or any other game title that they might have in mind. just sayin that it might be a good idea to broaden the gaming spectrum a little bit is all.

This is rude to state ,but I find Sega of Japan disappointing to even still mention "PSO2 still coming to western" ,since it is not very clear or elaborative about "when" exactly. So, this is causing a lot of frustration and turn-down to a lot of Phanasy Star fans. Over all, the "teasing" of Sega's "PSO2 still coming to western" is very low to do to their fans and even if it is un-intenional, they really need to speak openly about it being delayed and announce the "release date" or "cancelled" .

The supposed problem that Japanese developers have with transferring their games to US/Europe is "Too much lack of interest in these areas" This has been said by the people who make Monster Hunter and the people who make Phantasy Star Online that i know of. But the reason there is "lack of interest" is only because they hadn't released their games to us all in the time frame that we learned about it. There is a major flaw in how cross country games have been done by these developers. And it's this, They release a game that we in US and Europe are able to see has been released,We are so exited to see these games come to us so we take to petitioning and messaging our want of the game, When they finally see our interest, They say "ohh... well maybe we should get on this" but by that time it's too late we have already moved on saying "well that's never gonna happen" Or "Even if it came now they've already made a new game so what's the point" or we have completely lost care in the games.

One of the main issues is that they release a new game the same time the old game comes to our countries we see this and say "They got Monster Star Online Phantasy1 to us it should be easy for them to get Monster Star Online Phantasy2 to us since we now know their able to do it". By that time we have lost interest in the older version of the game and we won't play it knowing there is something greater. One thing I know is that "Monster hunter online" has recently been done in japan I want to play that game so badly right now but in a few years when it will likely come to us in america I doubt i will be nearly as interested if at all.

They need to jump at the opportunity to have all these hyped up fans grabbing at their games. Monster hunter online is a great chance for that just like phantasy star online2 was, Now however i don't know, So many people just have that lack of interest because they feel they got skunked at its release.

Heres hoping games to come will have this in mind.

Let's hope it never comes to NA/EU; I don't want to be IP banned from the JP version. And Episode 3 just came out and changed everything; a western release will be almost 2 years behind in content and still be on Ep.1 content, I bet. Why would you want to play old content, when you can just play the JP version (with English patch, if you prefer) and enjoy all the great Ep.3 content.

As for platform, why would it be put on another platform just because it's coming to the west? JP is the main market, and the game has remained on PC and Vita, and that's likely where it'll remain unless the Japanese developers choose to port it on another system, but that would require further staff resources to work on another platform and keep that updated, etc; it's not very feasible.

<< LINK REMOVED >> well good sir...I find this to be quite rude to the people who didn't want to intrude on a game that wasn't originally made for their language and area. I have been waiting for this game along with many others. There are lots of people that want this game to be released in NA....and all you are saying basically is you hope it doesn't come to us cause you don't want to have to play on a server that was made specifically for us...that is like slapping the game designers in the face....please be more considerate and careful with what you say on the internet....it will be sure to either annoy or offend somebody in some way, shape, or form.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, people who don't want to intrude also wouldn't bastardize those who wish the same. It's just that those who don't want to "intrude" are fet up and tired of the wait. They play the hell out of the game and said "I'm adapting instead of waiting." At the end of the day there will be a global server release if planned. So it's not a slap on the face if they say "well I don't care" or "I hope they don't" to anyone but those who want to play fair. I'd say get down with the program or sit on your hands. There isn't any insult intended if they hope for something that might never happen due to the fanbase populus.

Probably just having trouble 'properly' translating the whole game in English to make sure not to end with another infamous Zero Wing-like fiasco. Funny japs.

Tired of waiting sega. I'm sick and tired of japanese countries treating us like shit. it's not JUST sega, either. It's annoying. **** this game. If it somehow makes it to xbox 1 then you'll have my attention. I spent $2000+ on an alienware just for this game.... 2 years ago. I have no need for this computer anymore because this game is NEVER coming to America. Thanks sega. :D good job.

Menus? Yeah, some of them. Some of the quest orders text, too.
The "RPG" bits -the plot, the characters, the flavor text, it's all in Japanese still.
Might vary by which fan translation project, if there is more then one.

I'm still interested in pso2. But very unhappy with how sega has handled it. Since we were told it was coming and showcased at pax we have received 2 pieces of news about a western release. The first was that it has been delayed in an interview. The second a tweet from over a year later. And a slap in the face by it being translated and released in another country just 6-8 months after its release was announced...........
