Peter Molyneux's Next Game Is "Very Different"

"At the moment, it's hard to peg what genre Legacy falls into."

Peter Molyneux has teased that his next game is going to be "very different" than what he's made in the past. Speaking to Glixel, Molyneux spoke briefly about this game, called Legacy, and discussed how he's started coding again, which he says feels empowering because results can come past.

"I've been working on this game called Legacy, and I can--rather like the first game I really did, which was called Populous--just try an idea and see if it works," he said. "I was in the hotel this morning, I was having breakfast, I was coding Legacy, and I had an idea. Within an hour, I was actually playing with the thing."

Asked if he could say anything more about Legacy, Molyneux--who is known for hyping his games--said, "I think it would be a mistake to talk about it."

He added: "The only thing I think is wise to tell you is that it's very different. One of the things I am proud of is the number of different genres that I've attempted. At the moment, it's hard to peg what genre Legacy falls into."

Asked if Legacy is a mobile game, Molyneux suggested that nothing has been decided yet, though he did say the game is running on PC right now.

"More and more, I think it's better to be platform agnostic at the start," Molyneux said. "The first problem is to get the feel of it right. You do have to worry about the interface. You have to worry about the input method. At the moment, I'm focusing on the mouse, purely because it's the easiest for me."

The full interview is incredibly fascinating and touches on a number of other subjects; read it here.

Molyneux, an industry veteran known for franchises like Populous, Black & White, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, and Fable, left Microsoft in 2012. He now heads up the independent studio 22Cans, which has released two games so far: Godus and The Trail.

As for Microsoft's Fable series, its future seems to be in question. The newest entry, Fable Legends, was canceled, while developer Lionhead Studios is closed.

Hopefully he got the screwy stuff out of his system and we'll get another great game. Probably not :)

Peter, Peter, Peter....

Why are you still in the business? Do you not realize just how much people dislike you after all your failed attempts, your years of empty promises with games, and your public posts bashing on your backers and your old fans?

You haven't made a good game since Dungeon Keeper 2, and I really have to wonder with how great that game was...how much influence did you actually have over that game? It seems like everything you touch, fails miserably. I'm sure plenty of burger joints will let you flip burgers for them. Although, with all the evidence of everything you touch failing, you might end up killing customers. You're like the Starforge of games. Tons and tons of promises, eventually backing out of every project and trying to start fresh, only to fail again.

Nope. Don't care. He might as well be speaking like the adults in Charlie Brown because all I hear is nonsense. I can't believe anybody is still letting him speak. Even if he is the boss at 22 Cans, the entire studio should be making a collective effort to take away his smartphone, disconnect his phone and internet, and keep him trapped in his office at the mere idea that someone from the media wants to talk to him.

I would like to see a collaboration with Peter Molyneux, Chris Roberts, Sean Murray, and John Romero.

This dude is one of the biggest jokes in the gaming community.

Anything he has to say should be taken with a grain of salt.

I speak Molyneux. Allow me to translate:

"This game will feel very familiar to other genres of games you have played."

What he should do is not say a single word about the game, concentrate on making it the best he's ever done, then stealth drop it, to exceed everyone's already low expectations. For any dev who has imploded their reputation, the best thing to do is just be quiet and let the game speak for itself. No Man's Sky for example, they have smartly been VERY quiet, just working hard on patching. Let a substantial patch speak for itself, but above all, STOP TALKING..

I have to wonder how the people that work with him feel. Like, really feel, not the "he's eccentric" or "he's passionate" BS.

Remember how he promised an incredible prize for the player who resolved that massive puzzle, and then ignored him for years afterwards? Yeah, **** Peter Molyneux

Good thing he didn't go into detail about his new project, Mr. Molyneux has a propensity toward lying. He's every bit the fraud Shawn Murray of No Man's Sky infamy is.

I never considered Peter to be a fraud or a malicious lier. He just talks about things he envisioned like they already happened or that are about to happen, and then he is unable to meet the goal he set. This been said, its all to his deservice, and that does not mean he should have anyones bussiness.

Do not listen to this man.
He is the father of lies in the gaming industry.
He lied about Fable 1
He lied about Fable 2
He said Fable 3 was "better".

He is the reason Lion Head Studios went under.

The less I hear from this guy the better. Jim Sterling describes him as a "professional snake oil salesman". All of his games promise so much but never deliver close to what is promised.

He got a game running in an hour? Wow. Wish I could code like that.

Well, I'll give him a break on this one. I know he said "different", but then he also said it's better he doesn't talk too soon, so he's learning. There are far worse entities out there that don't seem to be learning.

@Barighm: He said this about Godus, the 'experiment change your life thing', and some other game he was doing too. Don't trust him.

Also, using Unity (or probably UE4 too) you can get a prototype concept spinning very quickly. You use libraries you've already built/bought and can move quick. It's the refinement that takes forever.
