Now Playing: Persona 5 Review

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

The celebrated new Atlus RPG, Persona 5, has now shipped 1.5 million copies. According to DualShockers, publisher Atlus announced the figure today.

The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 game launched in September last year in Japan, and finally came to North America and Europe earlier this week.

There is no word on how Persona 5's 1.5 million shipment figure compares to past entries in the series.

In other news about Persona 5, Atlus this week announced a streaming policy that threatens people who show off too much of the game's story. Additonally, Atlus has blocked the PlayStation 4's sharing features while playing the game.

Atlus is supporting Persona 5 with a lot of DLC--both free and paid. Here is a rundown of all the content that's coming to the game in the future.

GameSpot's Persona 5 review scored the game a 9/10. For more on the game's critical reaction, check out this roundup of review scores.

Also, they've block screenshots, which the PS4 reminds you about everytime you unlock an achievement (which pretty much sucks, if you like browsing thru your achievements to look at what screenshot snapped with it.)

Take this news with a grain of salt. Final Fantasy XV shipped over 6 million, but I've been to multiple Best Buys with literal stacks of unsold copies.

@Cikatriz_ESP: Yes, that makes sense. 6 million copies were sold to retailers. That's what "shipped" means. Nobody is buying them? Yes, that is why there are stacks of unsold copies.

@deebee: It's essentially just a PS3 game, right? Yeah, the Switch should be able to handle it, and as a handheld console, it will have the market to justify the port.

Hmm, wonder what else they will do with P5, will we get a P5gold edition with a slightly edited story, Or a P5P edition for the Nintendo switch with the option to choose a male or female alt at the start of the game, which would sell better on the Japanese market due to handhelds having a far larger share of the gaming market than home consoles.

Well I guess I'm greedy I want both.

Whoa!

I know that these are shipped and not sold but those are still staggering numbers for a game like this. No doubt all the high praise it has been getting has helped contribute to those high numbers.

Atlus should definitely be proud of what they have accomplished.

Its a shame that even in the rpg -crazy Japan these sort of games doesnt reach better sales...i mean, the game is 8 months old in Japan and it had to fight for the 1 million mark.

Hopefully there will be a big sales boost from Europe/North America and Sega/Atlus get rewarded for making such a great game even more

@lim30041982: if your using that as a measure then do. 1.5 compared to FFXV's 5. Compared to any other huge promoted games millions. I hope Atlus can fool people like they did with p4.

Shipped 1.5 million, shame they underestimated the demand, sold out everywhere here in the UK, scalpers increasing the price on Amazon, because Amazon didn't have enough, over a month wait for the PS3 edition, not something you would believe happening to a JRPG.

I got the steel book version for about 50 bucks thru Amazon, because of Amazon Prime's automatic early purchase discount (if the game comes from Amazon directly). Think it's 20% discount (which amounts to 12 dollars off for 60 dollar games), during the Pre-order period thru 2 weeks after release, but they often run out of copies during the 2 weeks after (most likely purposely, which would explain why they always run out of copies after a release).

@uubershikamarux: Sold out everywhere near me, got mine from Argos for £44, they had 15 copies at my local one and they were all gone by the time I got there to pick mine up, which was luckily reserved, Both local Game stores were sold out, guess its because of the higher population in my local area in the SE.

That's pretty impressive to be honest. Nier in comparison, shipped/sold 1 million in a month.

Glad this series of games is growing bigger, they really are great, unique gems.

That is very good to hear. It has always been a niche series with a cult following. This is the highest selling I think. It's the highest rated Persona on metacritic so far.

I really hope it sells even more, because people who lost interest in JRPGs need to check it out. That was me years ago until I discovered Persona 4. That game reinvigorated my interest in JRPGs, which I thought was a stale genre. I've played JRPGs before, but nothing like Persona. It's unlike any JRPG out there. No one makes even clones of Persona.

It's unique, and you need to try it.

@darthrevenx: No.. they are a tiny developer with no marketing budget. 1.5 million is surprising.

This game will not get advertised anywhere. They can't afford to. It can only spread by word of mouth.

@lostn: their reputation is what sells their games though, why waste on marketing when maybe the ads aren't ever seen anyways or not by those you're trying to sell to??? let the rep do all the talking, slowly but surely you gain a massive crowd which seems to be the case here.....

Congratulations to atlus and great support from playstation fans to the series. You got the number atlus, bring SMT back to playstation. No reason for SMT to continue to be niche offshoot compared to Persona, its the mainline series for sake!

@sakaixx: The series has gone handheld because it's cheaper to make games on it. On handhelds, there really is no place left to go than 3DS and Switch. Sony left the Vita to die.

And to make them for PS4 would require a lot of money. They can only afford a few console games here and there, and they'd have to be low budget.

P5 is a mid budget game that has been a long time coming. They are not yet in a place where every game they make can be a decent budget console game.

They are a dev with only 121 employees. Capcom which is struggling financially has over 4000 employees. Square Enix has 5 digits. With that scale, can you see why they make a lot of low budget handheld games that never do gangbusters?

@lostn: now its time. Switch is a hd console, keeping it there where the market is niche as fuk is not the way to go. Go for a console that support games like these, go multiplatform.

Hey Atlus. Great work on Persona and Odin Sphere. I know PixelArts is defunct and all, but some of us fans here are craving a remake of the shooter classic Skygunner, especially since Star Fox is kind of in a tailspin.

@moonco: I'm well aware of that but it's not really the same. It's more Space Harrier in the Skygunner art style.
