People Are Camping Outside GameStop For A Chance To Buy A PS5 Or Xbox Series X

Modern problems require classic solutions.

Among the hottest items up for sale this holiday shopping season are undoubtedly the new next-gen consoles, as stock of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X has been extremely limited. And that led to some extreme measures last week from shoppers who were willing to spend long stretches of time camped outside of stores, just for the chance to potentially get a console.

Preorders of the next-gen systems went in the blink of an eye, and that's a scenario that has repeated time and again as online retailers have restocked the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. More consoles did arrive in physical stores for a Black Friday restock, and more are now potentially expected on Cyber Monday. But in the case of the units that arrived in stores last week, the way to guarantee one was to wait in line early. That led to scenarios where eager console buyers waited hours--or upwards of a day in some cases--for stores to open and begin offering their limited supply of consoles.

As documented on places like Twitter, there are a number of examples of people camping outside of GameStop stores ahead of Black Friday:

Other people even went so far as to bring their beds with them as they braved the frigid winter air:

Sony faced "unprecedented" demand for the PS5 when it was released, with stock selling out almost as soon as it arrived and creating the "largest console launch ever" for the company. Over in the UK, the experience of buying a PS5 was soured by an army of bots that instantly snapped up any available units, allowing scalpers to resell the consoles at a massively marked-up price.

While the PlayStation 5's launch has been bolstered by a strong lineup of games such as Demon's Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Astro's Playroom, the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles also make for a tempting purchase thanks partly to the incredible value of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service and its selection of games.

You can check out our Xbox Cyber Monday order guide for the best deals on the console and games for it, or if you prefer a Sony device, our PS5 order guide will also have you covered with stock alerts that'll keep you informed of when you can next try to buy one.

After getting the series X on the 10/11/2020, the consoles kinda less interesting, if it wasn't for the incentives you earn on Xbox I'd probably would have bought a 3090, but I'd suspect given its insane price and lack of sli, I probably would have used it then sold it.

(Stil waiting for that onboard CPU for machine learning, no I don't mean upscaling, I mean actual machine learning assessed in the studio, and baked for the machine to adapt to the player, not this scripted shit ai, and where's the beautiful skin textures that change based on physics, bullets puncture flesh, your arms chopped off yet the games progressive and there's no reload.)

Where's the innovation.

If we are going to talk about something then let's talk Asus Rog 3 (3.10ghz 512g 16g ram 865+) runs rings around resident evil 4, it's a beast yet I find that more interesting then what's on offer(but to be fair for $488 for a series X its a bargain just a boring bargain)but it can't actually do machine learning, but Raspberry pi can you bet your arse it can If stripped apart to play Mario brothers 3 on its own, with tensorflows pixel regression.

Oh well

You all really think they're in queue to get one and play it?

I mean, Come on, there's not much to play at all at the moment on these new shiny consoles and it doesn't bring much but bragging rights to grab one and use it.

I'm pretty sure most of them are waiting in line hoping to buy them 500$ and resell them for over 1000$.

You know, some just can't seem to get a job for a living...

I'll never understand why anyone does this, especially not during a pandemic. Worse yet, neither console has an exclusive killer app, all the games are just upscaled ports or remakes. So these people are going to be waiting outside of stores, with no guarantee they'll even be able to get what they came for, and putting their health at risk to do so.

I'm sure that die-hard fans will be along shortly to tell me how even the small chance of getting a PS5 or XBSX is totally worth the risk of catching COVID and pushing some semi-exclusive titles like Bugsnax or the Demons Souls Remake as system-sellers, but to me none of that is worth catching COVID over. I should know too, considering that I actually caught COVID myself earlier this year, and although I obviously survived, I can safely say that nothing is worth catching it over.

How is a person not kicked out of a lot for setting up a full bed to sleep on? Finding a console here just got a lot harder because some activist tool decided to burn down the local Walmart. They didn't burn it to the ground but they succeeded in closing it for an estimated 3 months or so for repairs. Idiots. If someone is dumb enough to do that, sleeping on a bed in a parking lot to wait for a console seems a bit less nutty in comparison.

And I was definitely one of those. I got to GS in Newark Delaware People’s Plaza on Thursday at 5am and Camped for 26 and half hours and my GF split shift with me at times. I was 3rd in line for the PS5. This GS got 4 PS5s and 8 Series Xs. I got pics and video I will prob put on my Twitter later but I Facebook lived two videos of the later part of the camp and when they gave us our tickets. I’m gonna open my PS5 soon.

People are stupid. I cannot think of any toy that I care so much about that I would suffer waiting in near freezing temperatures overnight just for a nonguaranteed chance to get one.
