PC Terminator Salvation gets total recall

Evolved Games acknowledges debilitating install issues related to retail desktop edition of blockbuster movie tie-in; replacement program to be announced "shortly."

It would appear as if the machines are rising up against the PC edition of Terminator Salvation. After the game's release on Tuesday, purchasers of the PC edition flocked to publisher Evolved Games' message boards, reporting the following error:

Something is certainly broken here.
Something is certainly broken here.

"An error (-5006:0x80070002) has occurred while running the setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occurs, please contact your vendor: Evolved Games." The error, which was also experienced by GameSpot, occurred on installation of the retail PC edition only and rendered the game unplayable. However, copies of the game purchased through Valve's online portal Steam install correctly.

Today, Evolved Games acknowledged the error in a statement posted to its official forums, saying that it will recall and replace all afflicted copies of the game.

"Unfortunately a defect occurred during replication of the PC version of Terminator Salvation, which does not allow end users to install the game," the publisher said. "The Xbox 360 and PS3 are not affected and function properly. We have recalled all PC copies of Terminator Salvation from retail in North America and are currently in the process of replicating new copies."

"The new copies will be on store shelves in a few days," the statement continued. "A replacement plan for all end users that purchased the defective units is currently being set up. Details to get a replacement copy will be announced shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the end users that purchased the defective copy."

Installation issues pertaining to the PC edition aside, Terminator Salvation has thus far received a critical drubbing. For more information, check out GameSpot's full review of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.
