Parts of Mass Effect 3 DLC already on disc - EA

Publisher says "certain framework elements" of From Ashes content needed to be on disc to ensure "seamless" integration of new character.

BioWare has admitted that pieces of the From Ashes downloadable content for Mass Effect 3 are already on copies of the just-released action role-playing game.

Mass Effect 3's first DLC is already (partially) on disc.
Mass Effect 3's first DLC is already (partially) on disc.

In response to a user video showing that PC players could unlock the DLC's new character without a download, BioWare issued a statement to the GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine. The same statement was sent to GameSpot.

"As stated previously, in order to seamlessly integrate Javik into the core campaign, certain framework elements and character models needed to be put on disc," reads the statement. "We did something similar with Zaeed and Kasumi in Mass Effect 2."

It was not made clear if the parts of the From Ashes content are included only on the PC version of Mass Effect 3 or if PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 copies also host the content. As of press time, Electronic Arts had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Last month, Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson defended the timing of the From Ashes day-one DLC for the spacefaring role-playing game. He said development on the content did not begin until after the game was finished and in certification.

The From Ashes content is included with the collector's edition of Mass Effect 3 and is available for purchase. It includes a Prothean squadmate (Javik), a mission on Eden Prime, a new weapon, and an alternate appearance option for every team member.

For more on Mass Effect 3, check out GameSpot's review.

I'm pretty sure "do DLC after the main game is finished and in certification" doesn't hold water anymore, since it's obvious that wasn't the case. So what's the latest excuse? Thanks EA, I'll wait for a discount or hunt down a nice and cheap used copy. You don't deserve my money.

When you pay for a game your paying for everything that was created in the development lifecycle. When they take part of the game out as paid DLC on day one they are effectively making people pay twice for a small part of the game. I have not bought this game and will not buy any game that participates in this activity. Unfortunatly it seems very easy for corporations to steal money from naive people and I suspect it will continue...

@Black420Thorn Without us the gamers...those WHO actually buy their games...some of which are crap...I think we have the right to speak our mind of what's better and what's not because is us who buy the game not them...and they get money from US...so if they want to get money they have to listen to what we want or like otherwise no one will buy their games... And speaking of making a game... I'm still studying but I'm programming or at least trying to create indie games...even flash ones...and try to listen to what the majority likes...

What an utterly worthless BS excuse. BioWare, you're digging yourselves into a deeper and deeper hole every day. Nobody buys your nonsensical words anymore.

What is more important is the ending of ME3 makes any DLC after From Ashes unnecessary. The ending never changes no matter what you do in-game prior to it.

How come this makes news, yet all the crap Capcom does with its on-disc-already-DLC since 2009 doesn't get mentioned? There's a bigger gorilla in the room to be pointing fingers at for this sorta thing.

Seems like before you know it even singleplayer games will bee subscription based. 20 dollars a month to have it installed on your pc. That or buying bits of 1 game at full price like they ended up doing with SC2

Now I'm beging to be pissed. In either case Bioware better come up with some sort of way to explain this. Still the size of the DLC was pretty big at about 550mb's. Though they might be hiding something else with it.

@SergioMX Actually piracy is prevelant as much on console as it is on PC for your information. And you can thank console gamers for this DLC crap we get now especially from the Modern Warfare community. As they had the highest sales in any game made and they capitalized on that with map packs. And lets not forget the trade ins which justified game makers to war with game stores for trade in profits. All the issues in the gaming industry we have today is because of console game makers who worry more about making a extra buck instead of making a great game.

@clawixp a monthly fee to access THEIR servers, you don't own the mmo but a Disc You do own, So I should have everything that included on the disc. But from what I read not everything is on the disc , which means if someone was able to hack the disc they wont be able to do anything since it code that is useless with the rest of the upcoming DLC. Look I agree this no where near as bad what capcom just did with SFxTekken but comparing this to how MMO work is just wrong for the simple fact you own nothing since most of the game you play is in a server owned by someone else.

@Black420Thorn Lol your attitude towards the consumer makes me laugh. Sure the Developers are entitled to run there business accordingly and I'm entitled to complain about the service they provide and If they want to tell the people who pay them to go to hell will do what we want, then I'll spend my money where its wanted simple as that. Then Ill laugh when they go belly up cause your in the minority on this topic not the people hating DLC.

@Jestersmiles MMOs don't release 5-10gb patches. They release 5-10gb expansions. Learn the difference. Patches range from 500MB to 2GB. It's the same concept. I'm paying a monthly fee. I download content in March that won't be available until May. I have to pay two more months worth of fees to access the content that I've already downloaded. According to the misguided logic of the people raging against BioWare, I should be able to access that content because I've already paid money and it's locked on my computer, I just can't access it until I pay them money to play at a later date.

And that's the problem with DLC we pay 10$ for 15 minutes for companion and 1 mission. It's like they made originally for the game but found it none game breaking nor non important to the plot and figured will just remove it for now and sell it later as extra content. No one can disprove nor prove it. Now if they just stuck with real xpacs that added hours of gameplay and new content like they use to back in the day then we wouldn't be having this discussion. Because the only reason dlc got popular was because of the console community need new map packs for the mw3 games and so the game makers didn't lose money on the trade ins from GameStop.

@clawixp are you really comparing how an MMO does updates which can be up to 5- to 10 gigs at a time to console games who updates don't even reach that? awesome argument bro..... and lets not forget for MMo's you playing from their servers, that a big differences from console games WHICH YOU OWN.!!!!

@kinstar2002 Yeah...I keep reading that even the cinematics, basically the entire mission is on the disc, and you can unlock it. In this article though, the only thing that was shown is that video, that just unlocks the character and not the mission. I'm gonna check upon that, because as far as I knew unlocking the DLC is only available on pirated versions that already have the DLC in them.

The DLC has 600Mb + what is on the disc is Javik files because it was ncessary that he was accessible via the character selection GUI (which you cannot simply ‘overwrite’ with DLC).

Oh boo hoo. Get over it. You hate Dev or anyone telling you how to play YOUR game, and yet think it's quite normal that you tell Dev's how to create/market their game. I have the CE and NO, this is not a game breaker to have Javik on your team or not. Gamers have to be the most whiny people on the planet...and challenging to the Gov for the most unrealistic ideas ever.

Hey remember when you couldn't use mortal kombat characters because other people didn't have the information? Like if i bought the freddy character, and you didn't download the free update from the store, I couldn't use my new character. And they couldn't force the update on you because of the size limits that sony and microsoft put on patches. Sometimes on disc DLC is necessary and you only oppose it because it sounds dirty. This situation does appear to be a little dirty, but when you have your voice actor in for work, why would you tell them "no come back later so it'll cost us more money." It's funny how nobody cared about it on ME2 but not that it's a prothean who literally changes nothing in the story except some cool insight on the Asari homeworld. You should be way more pissed about that stupid ending than some random character who means nothing.

MMOs do this all the time. Framework for future content is released prior to the full content. Now, suddenly, a single player game does it and everyone is all pissed off? No wonder the gaming community is viewed so horribly.

@benelori That's completely understandable if you want to buy the DLC. But regardless IMO, It doesn't seem fair for the consumer to purchase "New levels, cinematics,,etc" when they are already on the disc. key word: ON the disc. I may have said partially but it can be said that it's on the disc already but just already to be unlocked when people purchase it.

@kukumav You're a leech and are one of the reasons why PC gaming has been on a downhill. People who pirate are only looking for a sorry excuse to make themselves feel better about doing it, and you know what the consequences of that is? Console like PC ports, lousy DRM, and a decline of PC dedication from publishers. You and EA can go die together. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

@Ringx55 The PC market is exactly "Here's our game, go put it out there." Steam just picks and chooses what games they want on their client and that takes a few days, but certainly there's no massive amount of paper work involved, are you even a PC gamer? I highly doubt that you are. Game devs literally have nothing to do in the 3 month certification process for Sony and Microsoft, you know what BioWare did in those 3 months with Mass Effect 1? They made the PC version a proper port, which is why its a 9 instead of a 8.5. The 3 month "lame duck" period is when the programming team makes DLC from the stuff the art team has made when they were programming the full game, if they finished making the art for the DLC. Art team finishes full game = programmers start full game = art team starts DLC Full game done = 3 month certification = if art team is done, programmers start DLC and then the DLC is certified later on. And just because something is partial doesn't mean it isn't any more wrong to do so. It's like buying a Nissan Z and having the passenger seat taken out after it was manufactured and them later charging you 300 bucks for the passenger seat, and with your logic that means it's perfectly fine for them to charge you for it because its only a portion of the car and not the whole thing, your argument is invalid.

@Ringx55 i proved my point. you just think you are better then everyone else and that is sad, sad people like you have nothing to live for, i don't feel sorry for you at all. a Freshman in High School? i laugh at how wrong you are. i have been a gamer for a very long time, when i was a young gmaer, we didn't have to worry about DLC and Patches for games. the game we played were a lot more fun then they are now. newer gamers are so spoiled it is not funny. we never had the internet to get online to play games. we had it easy back in the 80's and 90's. games were either good or bad and that was all that mattered. how times have changed. the NES/SNES/Genesis Era was a lot more fun. EA made a lot better games on those Consoles too.

@Ringx55, If they started after....... how could there be even just some parts in the dvd?? They created Javik for no reasons, put im in the dvd for no reasons and they had the idea after the game is done.... we'll we've got the Javik NPC who do nothing let's make i'm a companion NPC?!?!? Want me to prove that? You can download the DLC unlocker, and use it on your legit normal edition and you'll have the DLC. UNlocker is just a modified .exe of 5 megs. Man how can you seriously believe that? EA is just blatantly lying. And Anybody, fan or haters of Bioware should never stop complaining against this kind of marketing.

Yeah... I'll sure like to know how Kasumi and Zaeed were free to? Nickle and dime content should be free, but um EA/Bioware, you still charge for it. Expansions, which no one does anymore is worth it, but this small 1-2hr content that clearly is strip from the disc is ridiculous, and should be free. But this is another classic case from great old EA/Bioware! This is just as worst as when DA:A was release, and they couldn't give a rough estimate of the hours of the content you'll get. All the guy who represented Bioware could say is, "It's enough". That's it! How do people continue to support these companies like EA/Bioware, and Capcom, is beyond me. Yes! They make good games, but enough is enough after a while don't you think? Do you seriously like being push on, and like being screw on ever release? Do you get off on it? What is it, seriously?
