Parts of Mass Effect 3 DLC already on disc - EA

Publisher says "certain framework elements" of From Ashes content needed to be on disc to ensure "seamless" integration of new character.

BioWare has admitted that pieces of the From Ashes downloadable content for Mass Effect 3 are already on copies of the just-released action role-playing game.

Mass Effect 3's first DLC is already (partially) on disc.
Mass Effect 3's first DLC is already (partially) on disc.

In response to a user video showing that PC players could unlock the DLC's new character without a download, BioWare issued a statement to the GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine. The same statement was sent to GameSpot.

"As stated previously, in order to seamlessly integrate Javik into the core campaign, certain framework elements and character models needed to be put on disc," reads the statement. "We did something similar with Zaeed and Kasumi in Mass Effect 2."

It was not made clear if the parts of the From Ashes content are included only on the PC version of Mass Effect 3 or if PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 copies also host the content. As of press time, Electronic Arts had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Last month, Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson defended the timing of the From Ashes day-one DLC for the spacefaring role-playing game. He said development on the content did not begin until after the game was finished and in certification.

The From Ashes content is included with the collector's edition of Mass Effect 3 and is available for purchase. It includes a Prothean squadmate (Javik), a mission on Eden Prime, a new weapon, and an alternate appearance option for every team member.

For more on Mass Effect 3, check out GameSpot's review.

This is why I love skyrim... no day one dlc... heck NO DLC! Coz the game is finished!! and on top of that a brilliant mod commmunity! EA and Activision should learn something from last year's game of the year instead of only worrying about milking their consumers for every little bit of cash they have...

@dxBIGBOSSxb Yeah, true. The worst part is people are actually out there defending them. I wish Bioware was the company I used to love back in the KOTOR days.

I dont mind when companies add stuff like this in with a new game, similiar to an online pass, but when I have to pay out $63 for a new game, PLUS $10 just for a character thats already on the disc... Thats when I start to get pissed. Thinking about it now, I shouldve just picked up the N7 edition. I wouldve only spent $10 more than I did. Ohwell, I'll just remember that next time.

@MasterOfSprites Too late. The sales are still very high. EA blatantly ripped us off while laughing maniacally and lost NOTHING! I'm honestly very sick of this crap. They're just going to keep doing it, because "Midnight sheep" (that's what I call people who buy games at midnight launch) make the game sell just enough for it to make them a profit. Children and casual gamers (Who I don't entirely blame for being unaware of this issue) are the main reason they're getting away with it. THEY DON'T CARE! They just want a good game.

They should all be ashamed of themselves. Unethical business practices are unethical. EA admitted that the core content of the Day 1 DLC had been integrated into the through line of the game. This is nothing more than a despicable attempt to take advantage of a loyal fan base.

If you don't like the DLC and are pissed off with what they did with ME3. Don't buy them. Vote with your wallet.

Whether fans love them or not means nothing. Whether enough people buy it or not does and clearly the masses have spoken with their wallets. I do not buy EA games anymore.

This is why some people love indie devs so much on the PC. It's all about the games. Yeah, the indie devs want to make money off the game, but at the same time, they listen to their fans, and they love making the games. I've been noticing more and more that the devs are setting it up to where the fans are supporting development by preordering the games, and also the devs are holding fund raiser events to raise the money for the games. Such a far cry from the crap being done by EA and other devs. Now squenix is starting to do it with the FF series. Down with downloadable content!!! The PC is so awesome as well because the ultimate form of dlc is modding, and that is always free wen done by the fans.

Hey there EA! Why not read all these comments and defend yourself. You could just hide and pretend a majority of us are not upset or you could grow a pair and explain to us what the heck you are thinking.

Lol, with the bad endings now coming to light... well, EA/Bioware has quite a bit more to worry about. Man, how the mighty have fallen. Ever since EA bought them, is has been a slippery slope. I went from the biggest Bioware fan to not even sure if I want to invest in the next game from the company. I knew ME3 would be a debacle. What I did not know was that it would not be based around the multiplayer, which is actually decent.

@AyatollaofRnR So why would they lock it on the disc? As far as i am concerned i paid money for the game. Which includes the case, manual and game disc. Anything and everything on the game disc i paid for. I don't care if they put out a stand alone DLC... but the fact this was on disc and they made you pay for it is utter rubbish. Keep defending slimy and greedy business methods from bioware and ea. I bet you already have SWTOR subscription for a full year.

I think EA is running out of their and Bioware's feet to shoot. The funny thing about this day one DLC controversy is how soon we forget that Batman: Arkham City did the same thing with Catwoman. She is on the game disk and you either have to buy the game new or pay to get it. Rocksteady did that after anouncing she was in the game from launch.

Do you people really expect them not to have paid DLC as part of the business model? Games cost alot of money to make and it keeps people in jobs post release. This content was worked on after the game was sent to cert. Whether they include stuff on the disc to make future DLC integrate properly is a non-issue. The fact of the matter is making content for high def games is not cheap.

That is why MMORPG games with subscriptions end up being the cheapest form of game entertainment. When I started WoW it has lasted me many years and 14.95per month is way cheaper than 1-2 console games a month so in the long run it ends up costing less to play MMORPG games than console games.I will say even mmos are starting to put the screws to people.

Shame on you EA, this is how it starts, you are lying to your clients and we deserve better. Games are about 60 dollars and now you are charging to unlock portions of what we paid with our (or in most cases our parents) money. Shame on you and your lack of consumer knowledge... Go read a marketing book. because you just lost a client

I have an idea EA. Go back to the way Bad Company 2 handled DLC. Anyone who buys your games used has to buy the majority or all of the DLC, remove the online pass (it's not benefiting anyone), games bought new offer future free DLC or bonus content like how Twisted Metal Black is included in Twisted Metal 2012 new. This in my opinion, sounds better than your lame excuse for DLC or the online pass.

@Juguard, honestly, it doesn't need a law to stop DLC, all it takes is for gamers to stand up, give every piece of DLC the finger and not spend a penny on DLC that's such a blatant rip-off. When companies like EA realise that they sell 0 day-1 DLC they'll stop doing it. Until then, expect it to get worse as more publishers realise that gamers are actually willing to fork out $70 for a complete retail copy at launch (Which they'll obviously push to $80 or more, depending on how sales look).

development ends a lot sooner before the discs are shipped to stores and gamers purchase them. They tell the developer to make more content while discs are stamped and shipped, and that is why DLC is day one quite often. Also, I prefer on-disc DLC to the haphazard way Neatherealms studio did it for Mortal Kombat, where each individual player had to go download compatibility packs. I don't like day one DLC anymore than anybody else, but it is part of the business now. If you're truly upset, then take advantage of the market as I do: for the past two mass Effect games, I have not payed above twenty dollars for the base game in new condition. That way, I can buy all of the DLC (most of which, I caught on sale) and not ever reach the standard MSRP.

I don't know why EA or any other dev/publisher, is even trying to defend themselves, when everyone in this world knows that DLCs are used to make more money. It's just the business model they are using that is upsetting lots of people. They used to call them Expansions back in the day, now we get 30 min playtime with DLCs. Whats worse, we sometimes need to play these DLCs to make the connections between games. Example ME2 had "Arrival" DCL, has a connection with ME3. Another problem is that the race the character is in "From Ashes" has so much history in Mass Effect series, that it should have been included in the game, instead of DLCs. Its a scheme for people to buy it. Things are not going to change sadly, unless some law gets formed to protect buyers... but thats extreme.

This is a worse excuse than Capcom's "We can't add Co-Op online fighting for Tekken X Street Fighter to the Xbox, because gamertags look different". Next they'll tell me DLC now also stands for "Disk Locked Content" as a lame excuse to use anagrams against us. EA, you guys may publish good games, but you've also ruined and even killed good franchises pulling this kind of crap. Your corruption is so blatant and easily expose able, I wouldn't be too surprised if you added an evil laugh at the end of every statement you make or had a guy who looked and dressed like Snidely Whiplash as your spokesman.

Wow, EA really is doing their best to ruin Mass Effect and Bioware. EA really didn't have a whole lot of time to accomplish that in Mass Effect 2, they didn't have Bioware that long -- but give them some time and they will pull off what they always manage to do.
