Overwatch's Roadhog to Be Nerfed Very Soon

Overwatch's Roadhog will have his hook ability nerfed in the Public Test Realm very soon, according to the game's principal designer Geoff Goodman.

On the shooter's forum, Goodman details upcoming changes to Roadhog's ability: "The hook victim will now move in to the position directly in front of Roadhog, rather than just a straight line towards him. There is a cap on how far 'to the side' you can be pulled, so you can't just hook someone, spin 180, and dump someone off a cliff."

Goodman goes on to describe how Roadhog can no longer hook someone who he can't see, and a persistent line-of-sight check will cut the line between Roadhog and his victim if they drop out of sight mid-hook.

The changes are planned to go live in the PC PTR "very soon," possibly even this week.

Goodman says elsewhere in the thread that he thinks Sombra "could use a bit of a boost," suggesting she may get a buff in the near future.

Overwatch recently got a new map, called Oasis. It's the first new content of 2017 for the hero shooter, but director Jeff Kaplan has promised many more updates for this year, including new heroes, maps, modes, and more.

Nooo, my favorite character. Honestly other than his hook, Roadhog is almost completely useless outside of certain spots where his ultimate really comes in handy. He has no way to close a gap other than his hook and he doesn't do damage beyond close range. Now obviously people shouldn't be able to hook with their back to a cliff, 180-spin and dump someone off the cliff... that's just silly, but I'm a little worried about the changes to the way hooks work with line of sight.

A lot of those complaints that people had against Roadhog were from still having enough inertia to be moving out of line of sight while the hook is already on them. Like if you're in mid air and moving sideways towards cover and you get hooked, the hook gets you but you're still in the process of moving off to the side because you still have that inertia carrying you to the side. Thus it makes it look like you got grabbed when you were out of line of sight (not to mention accounting for the pings of each player). Their replay system isn't 100% accurate and because this is a first person shooter, you don't really see where all of your body is in relation to what's around you the way that you can with traditional MOBAs in an overhead view and for that reason I think a lot of people misjudge what actually happened with his hook.

@jinzo9988: The hook is a homing projectile with an absurdly long reach and can hook people through walls and around corners. It's about time they decided to fix that broken ability.

@jinzo9988: what kind of drugs do you do?

He is literally the only character besides genji who can literally do pretty much anything completely risk free in a 1v1 situation. His 'hard counter' reaper can literally shoot him from behind 5 times and hog still has time to self heal, hook, and kill him in a fraction of the time.

Not to mention a landed hook is literally a free kill every single time it's landed. Screw you. I hate that character and anybody that plays him, hes deserved a nerf from day one.

That's a buff, not a nerf lol. Now I don't have to account for the hook's trajectory, I can just hold the fire button and be guaranteed to hit.

Perhaps if the hook worked on contact rather than on activation it would fix a lot of these issues? It's a pain that your character freezes in place long before the hook connects.

@wavesolo10: Well don't call it a casual game since tournaments are held in its stead. Overwatch fan boys will come down hard on you and they already have. I am not a multiplayer gamer and I think Overwatch is a turd but I also accept the fact it's played a lot by fans of competitive multiplayer games. Whether you like it or not, Overwatch is a hot title and its players are anything but noobs or casuals. And this comes from a man whose brother is part of an Overwatch tournament team. It takes hard work to reach up to those levels.

It's currently in the top 5 most competitive game being played on earth. League of Legends, CSGO, Dota 2, Starcraft, Overwatch, Street Fighter, Hearthstone. There really aren't any other games close to these. Rainbow Six Seige is up and coming and a few sports games like NBA 2k, Fifa and Madden have tournaments.

LoL, CSGO, Dota 2 is the trinity with Overwatch very close behind, to say this game is for casuals when it's one of the most esports related titles in the world right now makes you look like an idiot.

@wavesolo10: The great thing about Overwatch is that it's a great game for casual players with quick play and the arcade where you can just have fun and not be too serious, while also having a really, really good competitive mode that has some really intense and fun games. If you're 6 friends that play together you can have some of the most satisfying and amazing multiplayer experiences around.

@granskjegg: I agree that it's more fun when play with friends... until you realize one of your friends is a deadweight on competitive mode who insist on playing only as Torbjorn and gets mad when told to switch. But he's a good friend and it's only video game... such a good friend...

I got the new update with Oasis last night... I thought that map was supposed to have those cool jump points in it? Maybe I just didn't see them?

Not exactly a buff, but Widowmaker could get a shorter grappling hook cd time also. Why Double Dragon can get anywhere but WM has to wait?

@Saladudo: so much this. WMs hook cooldown is ridiculously long for what it does. She clearly needs some love to become more viable and shortening its cd WOULD help she needs something to allow her to get away. If you compare WM in the game compared to her animated shes a real slug with no agility/escapes unlike the animated where she jumps around and does all the cool stuff using her grappling hook.

@gameroutlawzz: I think it would be cool to increase the range and allow her to move up or down the grapple. That way she could dangle from the ceilings.

@Saladudo: That's actually not bad. Would take some serious skill to get your head around the upside down viewpoint. Having to aim downwards to score headshots, for example, when your muscle memory tells you to aim higher.
