Overwatch's Competitive Mode Is Not Delayed [UPDATE]

Ranked multiplayer mode for Blizzard's shooter still on track for June.

[UPDATE] This was a mix-up. The Overwatch Twitter account today sent out the message below, confirming that Competitive Play is still on schedule to come out in June.

The original story is below.

Overwatch's ranked competitive mode will launch in July, instead of its previously suggested June window, Blizzard has confirmed.

Responding to a Twitter message asking about competitive seasons, the official Overwatch account said Blizzard will be "introducing our Competitive Play (hopefully) in later July."

It followed up with clarification that the studio is currently aiming for "mid-to-late July."

In May, Blizzard revealed it had decided to hold back Overwatch's competitive mode when the game was launched in order to redesign it.

"We worked extremely hard to get competitive play in the game for closed beta," designer Jeff Kaplan previously said. "We've been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we've temporarily disabled competitive play for open beta so that we can rework the system and make it better."

Overwatch's competitive play option was part of the game's beta and allowed players at level 25 to rank up through a series of divisions and tiers. As they progressed higher up the ranks, new rewards such as sprays, player icons, and voice lines were also unlocked.

A penalty system to punish players that leave in the middle of matches was also tested in the beta. Those who abandoned games had their completion percentage lowered; once it dropped below a threshold, they received a warning. If they continued to to leave games early, they were docked 75 percent of the collected experience in future games.

As of yet, it's not clear what will be changed for the new competitive mode, but Blizzard has discussed its approach to ranked matchmaking in depth.

Blizzard's Overwatch debuted at No.1 on the UK sales chart and became the fastest selling console title the studio has released. Overwatch launched on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Too bad they dont limit one character/hero per team (like Siege).

Kinda gets old with everyone picking the same 4 characters.

@Gravity_Slave: in my experience (currently lvl 44) people play a lot more than just 4 characters.

I for one can't believe Blizzard launched this game without it having every idea that I could possibly think of. EVERYTHING should be perfectly balanced at launch, just like in WC3, WoW, SC2, D3, HotS... ALL BALANCED AT LAUNCH, NEVER A BALANCE PATCH RELEASED.

Wait - so it's NOT a ladder system? If I can't rank up, then I'll only be playing with people who have played more, not being forced to get better. Very disappointed in this, if I'm now understanding this correctly (I was expecting something like bronze, silver, gold, plat etc in SC2)

@djwood84: i share your dissapointment in the idea of a non-ladder, progression "ranked" mode, but I've gotten the impression from that they are moving away from that idea. I think that's why they removed it in beta, so they could revamp the system.

If they do release a weird progression competitive mode, I don't think it will last. It makes no sense and they'll surely have to change it.

I'm guessing they'll do some weird meaningless league system like in SC2, but ultimately at its core will still be a rating based matchmaking system.

Games need to be with teams of similar skill to encourage meaningful competitive play, and development.

I thought this game was only competitive? So what is it now, co-op campaign only?

@girlusocrazy: No, there's no coop campaign. At the moment there's only a practice mode where you shoot stationary bots.

@autumnvarela: No coop campaign, no competitive mode, only a practice mode? This game launched more stripped down than SFV, I'm surprised people are interested in it at all.

I guess that deserves props for fun core gameplay.

The PlayOverwatch twitter account has already corrected itself and confirmed that the plan is still for June. Saying July was just human error.

You should probably work on your character/team balancing before you start implementing competitive play. Try playing attack on Hanamura or that Russian map against a team of 4 turrets and a Reinhardt. Can't believe that issue got past months of beta testing. And people said this game was balanced?

@chris91090: There is a lot of talk about limiting competitive play to 1, or maybe 2 of the same character per team. So that will help. I was amazed you can have more than 1 of the same hero on the same team in unranked.

@chris91090: Turret thing is a pain in the butt with how far they can auto lock on, but that scenario is doable. Just get a Tracer to get behind them and keep distracting them (If the turrets are just Bastion it's easy), mostly the Reinhardt. Then get someone to be Widowmaker and take them all out.

@sargentpsgamer: One Torbjorn is no big deal, but yesterday I had to go against a team of 4. Especially on Hanamura where there is only the main gate and one little door up top, it was unreasonably hard to get past that section with 4 turrets at different angles and the Reinhardt harassing when we tried to make a push, and us with no other angle than the one the main gate provided. We never did, and once it was our turn to defend we did the same thing (4 torbjorns) and they never got past. This continued for 4 games straight starting at Hanamura and ending at Volskaya Industries (an attack and defend game on each map). No one made it past the first gate.

If that's how this game is going to continue I'm going to regret my purchase.

@chris91090: Yeah the torbjorn is ridiculous in that scenario then. The turret lock distance shouldnt be as long as it is, and it shouldn't be as quick. You could be tracer and teleport all around it, and it sticks with you the entire time.

I know the area you are talking about, and it generally ends up in this situation. A reinhardt at the door and turrets along the back. It's extra hard to combat because their spawn location is literally right behind it.... Typically I can agitate a Reinhardt enough to turn, and get my teammates to eliminate him, but with the turrets it's impossible.

@sargentpsgamer: his turrets should only be as good as the hammering he puts into it. And he should HAVE to collect scrap to KEEP it running. If he neglects it loses accuracy and dmg and eventually falls apart.

Half of the player base will have quit by then. Overwatch is just another (though slightly better) Titanfall.

@paopumilkshake: Overwatch is fun, but I disagree with it being better than Titanfall. Titanfall and Overwatch are similar in that they are fresh shooters, but Titanfall was more balanced and overall a better shooter imo.

@7tizz: CTF wouldn't make any sense in this game since everybody would pick tracer, lucio or soldier and it would be very imbalanced. They would have to tone down several abilities that define said characters.

@7tizz: Tracer doesn't have a speed boost though. She'd be impossible to catch. 6 Tracers on the enemy team means CTF would be pure headache. Also all the slower characters would be basically useless; Tracer blinks in, grabs flag and is gone. Roadhog isn't going to catch her.

I'm also curious what 'balance issues' you're referring to?

@sixsixtrample: They would have to make it so that Tracer can't blink when carrying the flag. It'd be the only way to make it fair. People would then stop utilizing her because she is weak.

Lucio would need to lose some speed while carrying too, but otherwise should be fine. Soldier 76 I think would be okay. He's easy to take out.

Doing this would encourage people to use tanks, which are slower, giving both teams a chance.

@sargentpsgamer: @7tizz the problem with these changes is then you're spending a bunch of time and effort trying to balance around something that just doesn't work well in this game. If you take away her blink, she's not Tracer any more. I would rather see a totally new mode that uses the strengths of the characters than one that requires you diminish them.

@sixsixtrample@7tizz: on top of that, it was just get cumbersome to remember the specific changes made to characters based on what game mode you happen to get dropped into. It would just over-complicate things. Blizzard wouldn't go for it.
