We may already be more than two months into 2017, but the industry is still celebrating 2016's games. The Game Developers Choice Awards and Independent Games Festival Awards take place tonight in San Francisco as part of the Game Developers Conference.

The event kicks off at 6:30 PM PT / 9:30 PM ET, and you will be able to watch it live right here. We will add the Twitch streaming link as the show's start time draws closer.

UPDATE: Overwatch takes home the Game Developers Choice Game of the Year Award, and Quadrilateral Cowboy secures the Independent Games Festival Seumas McNally Grand Prize.

Leading the way for the Game Developers Choice Awards was Playdead's Inside, which picked up six nominations, including Best Audio, Best Design, Best Narrative, Best Visual Art, the Innovation Award, and Game of the Year.

Games that received five nominations each included Overwatch and Firewatch, while Uncharted 4: A Thief's End picked up four nominations; all of those were nominated for Game of the Year, alongside Bethesda's Dishonored 2.

For the IGF Awards, the top prize is the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. Nominees for that coveted award include Inside, Stardew Valley, Quadrilateral Cowboy, Event[0], Hyper Light Drifter, and Overcooked. In addition to the award, the winner gets a cash prize of $30,000.

You can see the categories and the list of nominees for the Game Developers Choice Awards and the Independent Games Festival Awards below. We will put the names of the winners in bold as they are announced.

Fantastic to see NO MAN'S SKY got an award. Nice to see commonsense in the game industry without any of the hateful vitriol of negative gamers. Its all about fun and that is what NO MAN'S SKY is for me.

Overwatch is solid at what it does, no doubt about it plus it has the blizzard polish which usually puts it over the top. It has also enjoyed loads of success which helps with these awards.

Inside is just a treat. That game has all sort of hidden qualities. Kudos playhead, kudos.

Firewatch is one simple game. The graphics aren't amazing, the animations, the movement, they are all fine but not extraordinary. But man, that game has a soul and it's all in the voice acting and the script. It delivers something outstanding with just those assets. Kudos.

Once I saw that "No Man's Sky" won an award, the irrelevance meter for this awards ceremony skyrocketed. That game alone is a parody.

Odd... the only reason there is anything from xbox at all is because they had to create their own catagory to feel like they are part of it and get a trophy too...

Did msft ignore 2016?

@videogameninja: It doesn't matter, Uncharted 4 is the consensus GOTY. Overwatch can't catch up. https://gotypicks.blogspot.com/ this link shows the totals, and what's done is done. Crazy thing is, only US and UK outlets give Overwatch GOTY. It seems that the rest of the world doesn't care very much for that game.

"Crazy thing is, only US and UK outlets give Overwatch GOTY. It seems that the rest of the world doesn't care very much for that game."

- yeah, because the US and UK are such insignificant players in the video game industry...

I say OW rightfully won that award. In an industry saturated with first person shooters, a new IP was able to release and carve out a name for itself. While big hitters like CoD, Halo, and BF are focused on k/d ratios and standard fps gamemodes, OW was able to breathe new life into the team-based objective genre of shooters, with a fresh aesthetic and offerings for both competitive and casual players.

The Uncharted games are always solid games, but Uncharted 4 is the 4th in the franchise - it's had 3 prior titles to build up hype and a following. OW is a new IP, and for it to accomplish all that is was able to, from both a sales and critics perspective, rightfully puts it as a GOTY winner.

@Walker5482: In your link I checked out the best selling games of their respective years. All CoD lol. I could only imagine how salty that makes some people.

@moose-fitz: Eh, COD's been best selling for some times now. It's a fact, and it's the reason why we hates it: Activision is too afraid to change the formula, lest them lose their golden egg. Not very hard to understand lol

@videogameninja: I honestly don't get why it is so popular. It is a pain in the butt to play. I could never get into it.

It will win though because it is Blizzard and has an "inclusive" cast. Not saying there is anything wrong with having different races but I don't see it being a big deal either way.

Avatar image for redalert539

@X-7: In a similar way that UC4 is popular. Because it's Sony's most recognizable IP and a PS4 exclusive. The game itself is an interactive movie borefest yet game journalists keep shoving it down our throats as a masterpiece for the aformentioned reasons. That's how it is though, you like what you like and you don't give a banthas's poo what the awards say. I know i don't(though i do love OW).

@redalert539: interactive movie borefest?? This aint rise to rome.....

Seems some salty kid never played it and is simply clueless

Avatar image for redalert539

@Mirimon78: Ok, maybe i was a bit harsh on that statement but my point still stands: it's a mediocre game presented to us as a gem. Which is not. Simply my personal opinion so try not to get overly offended by it.

Cheers.

@redalert539: having an opinion is one thing, sharing an opnion about something you have never experienced however is pointlessly clueless.
