Overwatch Hero 30, Baptiste, Gets Story Trailer [Update]

A combat medic with an emphasis on combat.

Blizzard recently began teasing another Overwatch story, seeming to focus on a new character named Baptiste. The company has now released a lengthy story trailer focusing on his background, and confirming that he'll be the next playable hero--Hero 30. [Update: Blizzard has now fully revealed Baptiste as Overwatch's new hero. He's actually playable right now if you own the PC version, as he's included in a new PTR update.]

As detailed in the story trailer, Baptiste was one of millions orphaned during the Omnic Crisis. In an apparent act of desperation, he joined the villainous group Talon. But he came to regret his decision and abandoned them. As detailed in the initial teaser, the group subsequently sent operatives to silence him, and they went missing themselves. Now he roams the world trying to help people, whether they need a band-aid or a bullet.

The first teaser was a letter signed by a Captain Cuerva, as part of one of the Talon ops to capture or kill Baptiste. Cuerva said not to underestimate Baptiste, and that he personally oversaw his Talon training. Cuerva's mission went awry and several agents went missing. At the time, it wasn't clear if Baptiste was the new hero or Cuerva.

Now we know for certain that it's Baptiste, but we haven't seen his abilities or play style, or exactly when he's coming as a playable character. The attention given to his background as a medic suggests he'll be a support character.

New characters are released first on the PC's Public Test Realm before moving into the live game on PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime later. With multiple teases having now been released, the character's release could be coming soon.

Narration over still images? What has become of Blizzard? Low quality trailer and low effort. Sad.

Overwatch's story telling methodology reminds me of Destiny 1. The epic stuff already happened and it isn't shown in the game (the Omnic Crisis). If Blizzard worked on an actual Omnic Crisis campaign I would go back playing Overwatch. A glimpse of that amazing stuff is all we've seen so far. Bastion's CGI when he sees his flashback, Reinhardt's battle in his flashback, and an extremely short flashback in D.Va's memory of a big battle that involved some giant Omnic mecha that we can barely see anything of for about 2.5 seconds.

THAT, Blizzard, is the 'interesting' lore of Overwatch. Unless you bring a sort of current time period Omnic Crisis 2.0 to the story, all you'll ever do are those short character-centric little background stories about how this guy or that girl tries to survive, or tries to find 'answers', or whatever. We don't even have a story about reforming Overwatch as an organized group ever since the game came out back in 2016. Even the FIRST one of their CGI short (Winston) clearly implied a 'return' of at least core Overwatch members and about how apparently hard it will be due to being disbanded for some time.

Ever since the game came out there's been absolutely zero continuous, consistent and progressive story-telling about even that much (reforming Overwatch). Not even against Talon or another sort of common threat (or one that would be looming and they'd be building over a couple of months).

Yet, the irony is that despite the fact that this game is definitely "just" about PvP and online play (and eSports), they release all those short stories in very irrelevant comics and some CGIs thrown in every couple of decades and pretend that there IS a "story" to Overwatch.

Oh yeah? Then please do tell me what's actually going on right now in the current events of Overwatch.

We have very little character-specific stories, but nothing else. This reminds me of how BioWare came from the likes of Baldur's Gate 1&2, Mass Effect 1&2, Dragon Age 1, and Knights of the Old Republic; only to end up with the shortest, most generic narrative they ever made in their history with Anthem, despite the budget and advertising thrown at it to flourish.

Well, that's the situation with Blizzard and Overwatch. It's the same company that created narratives like StarCraft 1 (much better and more complex than SC2), the WarCraft universe and the Diablo universe... and end up with Overwatch and about how this character was created on the Moon, and about how another duo happens to be some bandits, or about how that woman was kidnapped and remade by Talon into some purple-skinned assassin; or how that out-of-nowhere new (insert character name) guy/girl was apparently part of one of the original cast's life at some point but we never got to hear about it originally because... oh wait, because Blizzard never actually built a story for this game from the start, and are making it up as time passes without knowing where to go with it.

Amazing.
