Overwatch Concept Art May Show Off An Unrevealed Character Idea

It's "not the hero who you think it is," Jeff Kaplan says.

As part of his DICE Summit talk today, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan shared an early piece of concept art that seems to reveal a character who has not made it into the game, at least so far.

The image below shows off many of the characters players will recognize, such as Tracer, Winston, Mercy, and Genji. Right in the middle, however, we see a giant spider-like creature shooting a laser beam.

Kaplan knew this was likely to catch the attention of eagle-eyed fans and was sure to comment on it. "I need to say this for our subreddit so it doesn't implode: No, the hero in the center is not the hero who you think it is," he said.

This comment follows a recent forum post in which Kaplan had a similar message about the game's next character, saying it's "not who you think it is." That was apparently in reference to Doomfist, whom many expect to see added in the future (possibly voiced by Terry Crews).

It's unclear who he was referring to with today's comment. Blizzard began teasing the next playable character this week with a blog post that introduces a young scientist who may be the canonical creator of the character.

Blizzard has said it has more than one character in development right now. As for whether any of them are large, Wild Wild West-style spider robot things, that remains to be seen.

During his talk, Kaplan also relayed a story about how the Dorado map mistakenly draws inspiration from the wrong country.
