Overkill's The Walking Dead Failed To Meet Quality Standards, Contract With Rights Owner Terminated

Skybound is breaking up with Starbreeze.

A new Walking Dead game from Payday developer Starbreeze Studios, Overkill's The Walking Dead, released back in November--and it was a major disappointment. Now, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman's media company, Skybound, has ended its contract with Starbreeze for the game, citing the poor quality of the game. [UPDATE: the PC edition of the game is being removed from Steam while the PS4 and Xbox One editions are now in question]

In a statement, Skybound said it worked hard with Starbreeze since 2014 to create a unique and compelling Walking Dead FPS, but it didn't work out.

"As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill's The Walking Dead," Skybound said in its statement. "Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional co-op action FPS."

While Overkill's The Walking Dead did not work out the way Skybound would have wanted, the company said it continues to be dedicated to making more Walking Dead video games.

"We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately Overkill's The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised," Skybound said. "We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP."

Overkill's The Walking Dead launched in November for PC. The game was also announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with publisher 505 Games handling the publishing of the console editions. As of last week, the console editions were still planned for release, but it's not clear if today's announcement. We've contacted Starbreeze and 505 to get more details.

This is just the latest blow for Starbreeze as a company. Back in November, Starbreeze admitted that sales of Overkill's The Walking Dead were lower than expected, and as a result, the company would undergo a restructuring of its business. As part of this, Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson resigned from the company, while other members of the Board of Directors also left.

In December, Starbreeze's offices in Sweden were raided, with authorities seizing computers and other documents from the premises.

Some people is reporting that their pre-purchases have been refunded. That doesn't sound good.

It's amazing how fast they went down. Amazing and sad.

could have at the very least let them finish creating the content that was promised for the people who purchased the deluxe edition... I mean this is kinda like the double middle finger in the face to people who purchased the deluxe edition.. Although I do agree the game wasn't very good..

Game looked like a total joke that did nothing with the Walking Dead brand.

The Walking Dead needs a survival, community building game. Not a shooting action game. State of Decay was the closest thing but the second game did not take the leaps it needed to to make TWD like world come to life. We really need a game that pushes a community, people you have to take care of, and situations you have to deal with. In particular we really need the element of other humans/communities being in the world and being threats.

There are too many Zombie games and I think Starbreeze have missed their chance to pick up some moderate console sales. Resident Evil 2, Days Gone, World War Z, Last Of Us II and Dying Light 2...

An FPS feels like low-hanging fruit in the "zombie survival" genre, in my opinion. Personally (which I realize amounts for jack squat), I'm waiting for a full-on survival sim that includes the aspect of starting a new settlement/collective and building a new home or fortification. Not just a "this or that" game or a shoddy cut-and-paste mobile game where you click a building slot and wait for stuff to happen, a living survival sim. For how easy this fits into the PC "survival" genre, I'm surprised they haven't just dumped money on one of the DayZ-esque projects and made one that's actually AAA-worthy.

The whole community dynamic and "structure to survive" aspect was always the most interesting part of The Walking Dead to me. The first season was the shock and appeal of the zombies and people being thrown into the wild, then after the second season, it became more about how people banded together, created communities, and how those communities and what they've built worked for their survival compared to other similar communities.

@alucardswrath: A lot fo TWD merchandise still around and lots of people still watching the show, not to mention the comics keep selling well. You not caring doesn't mean others do not.

Can't blame em. Aside from a poor game it was massively overpriced compared to similar ilk.

Jeez, Starbreeze is officially hosed now, isn't it? I hope that when it does go belly-up, Tim Schafer is able to get a new publisher quickly for "Psychonauts 2."

As far as "The Walking Dead" games go, I'd be interested if someone tried it as an RPG.

@zmanbarzel: What are we talking here? The term 'RPG' has been watered down so much in the last decade...

Same here. I'd actually like to see them compete with undead labs and State of Decay. Resource management, base building, permadeath, personality affected stats and roles, a ton of different weapons.

@ultimaweapon79: Have you tried out the game Survivalist yet? it is some what oldish game now but like State of decay it was the closest thing to what a walking dead game should be like and includes everything you asked for above, now if they take the best elements from both state of decay and Survivalist and make it a high quality game I believe we would have a zombie survival resource gathering bad ass of a winning game we always dreamed of. but for now just hoping Survivalist 2 will be closer to a dream zombie game.
