Ouya CEO: "We've made a lot of mistakes"

Julie Uhrman recalls struggles during first year.

During Ouya's first year on the market, the company made many mistakes and more are likely to happen, CEO Julie Uhrman said during the XOXO Festival recently.

"We're a new company. We are a dirty company. We make a ton of mistakes. Let me count the ways," she said in a presentation now available on YouTube (via Polygon).

One "highlight," Uhrman said, was failing to deliver Ouya units to backers on time. The first consoles made it to supporters on schedule, but some backers had to wait more than a month for their delivery. Uhrman said previously that she was "pissed" about this.

When Ouya units did make it to users, some controllers had thumbsticks that didn't work and some action buttons got stuck, she said. On top of this, the WiFi feature for some Ouya units was shoddy, Uhrman said, and some controllers were laggy.

Another mistake Uhrman admitted to involved a tweet the company sent out about The Dragon, Cancer, a 2014 Ouya-exclusive game that details a family's personal struggle with childhood cancer. Ouya's tweet about the game coming exclusively to Ouya ended with "Get some."

Uhrman also addressed the controversial Free The Games Fund, which offered fund matching if developers agreed to at least time-exclusivity on the Ouya platform. "We so did not think about all the different ways that people could take advantage of that kind of program," she said.

There was also the vomit-fuelled Ouya advertisement that poked fun at $60 games, which drew controversy over its over-the-top usage of puke.

"We have done a lot of things wrong. We've made a lot of mistakes, and I think one thing that's really unique about us is that we're going to continue to make them," Uhrman said. "We're young, we're scrappy, we're moving fast. We're building this product in the open with you. We got our start with you. We get better every day because we listen to you. Some things are going to resonate and some things aren't going to resonate."

The Ouya microconsole officially launched in June. It has not been announced how many units have been sold to date.

The worse console launch ever. I thought the PSP Go and Virtual Boy were bad. At least their controllers worked. They had no problems getting them to customers. This was a complete disaster and a waste of money for most gamers who bought one. Now there are other companies trying to copy Ouya and will make the same stupid mistakes. lol!!

Sadly, the biggest problem OUYA faces is... it launched amid the media frenzy of the AAA console wars. If OUYA could have released a year or two earlier (or possibly a year after the AAA console releases) and gathered some steam -- media coverage, hardware tweaks, and larger games catalog -- the future could have been brighter for OUYA. It's not dead, but with PS VITA TV coming stateside soon and Sony actively courting so many indies, the future looks uncertain for the little box. Still, if OUYA can find or cultivate one or two GREAT games -- breakout titles -- we could be seeing the console around for years and years to come. But is any indie going to go for an exclusive deal with OUYA at this point?

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a niche device for no audience. Not much it can do vs. ps3, ps4, xbox 360, xbone, wii u, wii, N64, sega genesis, SNES etc.... if they brought out the OUYA 10-15 years ago it mighta had a minor impact. there is nothing appealing about it.

@MAGIC-KINECT @battlefront1943 Yes, it is a niche device, but you are incorrect when you say there's no audience. And who said OUYA is competing against the PS3 and XBOX 360?

My point was OUYA is eclipsed right now by media coverage of AAA consoles. Also, PS VITA TV (courting the same audience that you claim doesn't exist) showed so much response that it's getting released in the US.

I'm sorry but you just sound ridiculous.

During their initial "Free and Open platform" hype they also completely failed to mention the thing would be shipping with a locked boot loader and when they said the thing would be "hackable" they meant it would have the exact same app development tools as every other Android device on the planet.

Y'know, people make the OUYA out to be a total failure and a waste of plastic and silicon.

But here's the thing - it's a budget console, not a next gen system. I can forgive their mistakes on basis that it's their first attempt at a console, and for what it was, it was a decent first try.

Besides, this was what got more Android-based systems out, so it's really not as bad as people are making it out to be. It did a couple of things right, at least.

Don't be stupid dude it's not a console, it's now more antequated than newer gen android phones and apple phones.

It's an android device that you can plug into your TV to play mediocre games, and SNES emulators.

Whether it's powerful or not is not important.

The components of a console can still be modified, if you are nuts enough to even attempt it. Besides, 'games console' generally refers to a system primarily on which games can be played; it doesn't refer to its components, rather what it does, and in this case it plays games, and is its own system. Therefore, a console.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It's not really a game console. Game consoles can not be modified. This is more a game system, because all of it innards can be upgraded in the future. Game consoles are stagnant systems, with only the storage being upgradable. So no, it's not a console. It's more a gaming device or gaming system that can be hooked to your T.V.

They made a lot of mistakes that will benefit the next Ouya console. They're also the first company to make an open source android based console, which inspired at least half a dozen other android based consoles being made now.
Kudos to them.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yes I do, I've rooted, un-rooted and re-rooted 3 android devices 2 of which had locked bootloaders. Admittedly I've no experience with the Ouya but a quick look at the XDA forums tells me it's possible to root, install custom recovery and a custom rom to the Ouya. It just doesn't seem to have as much popular support as other devices.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except you can't just unlock the bootloader on an Ouya. There's no way of booting to recovery so if anything doesn't work while you're developing your ROM and your Ouya won't boot it's permanently bricked. Seriously, have you got any idea what you're talking about

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> PS3 and 360 are closed source devices, which means hacking them might be considered illegal depending on where you live. Cannot be compared in anyway to android devices.

For Android devices with locked boot loaders, if you unlock the boot loader you do indeed void warranty, but re-locking restores the warranty. As for bricking, well that's a risk you take with any device you try to hack regardless if the boot loader is locked or not.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes there is something preventing that, A LOCKED BOOTLOADER! That's why there are virtually no custom ROMs for it and if you do try using one you'll void your warranty and potentially brick your Ouya, that's no more 'open and hackable' than a PS3 or Xbox 360.

Not all Android devices come with a locked bootloader, which is irrelevant anyway because they aren't marketed as hackable!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> So does almost every android device. There's nothing preventing you from rooting it and installing a custom version of android, just like any android device. It's very hackable and modifiable.
