Ouya CEO: "We've made a lot of mistakes"

Julie Uhrman recalls struggles during first year.

During Ouya's first year on the market, the company made many mistakes and more are likely to happen, CEO Julie Uhrman said during the XOXO Festival recently.

"We're a new company. We are a dirty company. We make a ton of mistakes. Let me count the ways," she said in a presentation now available on YouTube (via Polygon).

One "highlight," Uhrman said, was failing to deliver Ouya units to backers on time. The first consoles made it to supporters on schedule, but some backers had to wait more than a month for their delivery. Uhrman said previously that she was "pissed" about this.

When Ouya units did make it to users, some controllers had thumbsticks that didn't work and some action buttons got stuck, she said. On top of this, the WiFi feature for some Ouya units was shoddy, Uhrman said, and some controllers were laggy.

Another mistake Uhrman admitted to involved a tweet the company sent out about The Dragon, Cancer, a 2014 Ouya-exclusive game that details a family's personal struggle with childhood cancer. Ouya's tweet about the game coming exclusively to Ouya ended with "Get some."

Uhrman also addressed the controversial Free The Games Fund, which offered fund matching if developers agreed to at least time-exclusivity on the Ouya platform. "We so did not think about all the different ways that people could take advantage of that kind of program," she said.

There was also the vomit-fuelled Ouya advertisement that poked fun at $60 games, which drew controversy over its over-the-top usage of puke.

"We have done a lot of things wrong. We've made a lot of mistakes, and I think one thing that's really unique about us is that we're going to continue to make them," Uhrman said. "We're young, we're scrappy, we're moving fast. We're building this product in the open with you. We got our start with you. We get better every day because we listen to you. Some things are going to resonate and some things aren't going to resonate."

The Ouya microconsole officially launched in June. It has not been announced how many units have been sold to date.

Yeah? What's their console called? Sitting in your chair with an iPhone playing Angry Birds is what we call passing the time, not gaming.

I have nothing against Apple, but they are not a gaming company.

Technically, yes, but comparing Angry Birds to the Last of Us is like comparing Ping Pong to Tennis.

It never reached critical mass due to poor/lazy execution, now it is irrelevant.

i think its an interesting console but i dont think it will ever be as big as they were hoping it would be to be honest. I think it will remain a niche market though. and maybe thats not a bad thing. maybe companies shoudnt be afraid to come out with things like this and not worry too much if it doesnt become a huge huge hit. but yeah i think the problem is most of what it can do the average cell phone today can do so.....and not a ton of games for it. most of the games for it you can get on your cell phone. so...and my guess is most of the games are of that quality too. not that indy games cant be great..its just it takes special talent for a indy game to stand above the rest sometimes.

@Gegglington They were refused a spot at E3 if I remember correctly. They ended up setting up their own display in a parking lot accross the street. And hey if im wrong the statement will be followed by 100 comments telling me how stupid I am (hell maybe even if im right)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, I read the E3 incident. But you're making up unknown assumptions. Fees were not the issue? How would you know that? Do you have the payroll for Ouya or any of these other smaller companies? Ouya still has an obligation to get a product to each of their backers. How much money would they still have left after that and other bills they have to pay? You're assuming like you know everything.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> With the backing dollars (over 10 million) and hype over this system, fees were not the issue. If you take a look at the companies that had booths there (like I just did) you would see many smaller companies there than OUYA. They were deliberately not included and held their own Demo accross the street in protest. Seriously google it!

I sold mine on Ebay. I don't miss it.

If your Android phone or tablet has an HDMI output feature and you have a controller, you can do just about anything the Ouya can do, better.

And it's not that much more to get a cheap used Windows 7 PC or Linux box and hook it up to your display. You'll never run out of things to play then.

Sorry, but I have to disagree on #7. The Steam Box is too expensive and is nothing more than a non-upgradable (reportedly) small form factor PC. Most Steam users already have a strong PC and will get no benefit from spending another $1000 on a base model Steam Box. There is still no mention of what games will be available (remember that Steam games for Windows will NOT work on the Steam Box).

I think #8 kinda explains another reason why the Steam Box will fail.

@DrKill09 I think it's a startup company for a reason. You honestly expect it to play with the big boys? Mind you, I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just being realistic.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If the deployment had been FLAWLESS, they might have been able to get a toehold in the market. Hardware...software...marketing...it all had to be right from the get-go.

Instead all aspects were disasters.

With Android being an open platform, now there are many others trying to exploit the same idea. And there may not be a market for this in the first place.

Big developers seem to like cheap mobile gaming...probably because there's such a large install base. They'll sell LEGO Batman 2 or GTA Vice City for $3-5 each because 1) There are hundreds-of-millions of people with Apple & Android devices, and 2) because casual gamers on handheld devices simply will not pay $20+ for those games.

There's no financial incentive for studios to support cheap console gaming if it cannibalizes sales of their $40-60 PC and console titles. They aren't going to put Call of Duty, Battlefield, Arkham and other big brands on the Ouya for a couple dollars if it costs them sales at the $60 price point.

@skippiman I disagree. I've felt it was a bad idea from the start. Yeah I guess I'm some sort of pessimistic visionary(i.e. a cynic).

Makes a good HTPC client...But at that price, you can build one significantly faster. Or go with a Raspberry Pi.
