Now Playing: GS News Update: Outlast 2 Banned In Australia

[UPDATE] Kotaku Australia has obtained information regarding the offending scenes that informed the Classification Board's decision to deny classification to Outlast 2.

The Board's report noted that the game would potentially be considered for an R18+ rating "without the depiction of implied sexual violence."

More details can be found on Kotaku's story, but readers should be aware of potential spoilers and descriptions of sexual assault.

[ORIGINAL STORY BELOW]

In a ruling issued on March 15 2017, the Australian government's Classification Board stated that Outlast 2 has been identified to "depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified."

Kotaku noted that the demo for Outlast 2, released in September 2016, received an R18+ rating which acknowledged the game's high impact violence, blood and gore, strong themes, moderate language, and mild nudity.

Outlast 2 will not see a release in Australia unless developer Red Barrels decides to resubmit the game for classification with changes that would help their work meet Australia's rating guidelines in a manner that appeases the Classification Board.

GameSpot has contacted Red Barrels for a statement.

Until 2013, Australia's highest classification rating for games was MA15+, meaning games that had themes unsuitable for those above fifteen years of age would be refused classification. In July of 2011, after years of contentious lobbying, all Australian state governments finally agreed to begin the process of introducing the R18+ rating for video games in the same manner that has existed for films since 1970.

Because of the historically narrow scope of Australia's video game classification system, many significant games have been banned in the country. Fallout 3 was initially banned in 2008 for portraying morphine to have a positive effect on the player, which encouraged Bethesda to rename the drug "Med-X" in all versions of the game. Since the instatement of the R18+ rating for video games, titles that have been refused classification include Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Hatred, and South Park: The Stick of Truth, although South Park's offending content was eventually humorously edited for the region.

Outlast 2 was originally due for release at the end of 2016, but was eventually delayed until April 25. Red Barrels also recently announced Outlast Trinity, a physical collection of all three Outlast games, also releasing on April 25. You can listen to some eerie tracks from Outlast II's soundtrack right here.

My country Australia is so politically wrong and backwards as over 5 years ago we only had MA15+ so games where getting banned by the truck loads Manhunt 1/2, blitz the league, crimecraft ,dark sector , enzai, falsely accused ,hotline miami 2, synicate , shell shock 2 , risen, postal 1/2 , reservoir dogs . The list goes on then there was edited games with another big list again, until 4 years ago we got RATED R in games to come in line with movies that are stamped MA 15 + but are R rated and the rest of the world . But now this outlast 2 banned here , so thats ok i will order it from overseas or download it from steam ,so this circle continues till the next list of games go through this again

so your government thinks that you are good enough to vote by the age of 18, but it doesn't trust for you to play a horror game? Or any kind of violent game? this my friends, is the road to totalitarism. This what had happened to my country, romania, for many years, but now, at least we are getting outside and peacefully claim our rights. we are being heard all over the world now. and by the way, at least one in 3 romanians played at least one violent till now, and we made a human flag with our country colours protesting against our corrupt government so i don't see what violent games have to with civic education. so, really, if you want something go outside and ask for it, but if you think that staying inj front of your computers, cell phones or tablets shouting about how bad the censorship is, well then, i wish you welcome to Austalistan, cause you are not very far away from that road.

@troytroy0883: In Sweden you get jailed for criticizing immigrants. Free speech is dead in Europe and Australia. Free speech only exist in USA now. Political correctness and socialist communism are winning. Welcome to China :D

@Xatsuna: Fake news (really fake), something you would have noticed with a small google search or if your news source would not be a biased alt-right propaganda. You talk like a pupped of a establishment making you believe that everyone who disagrees with you is a communist.

Yet...

You don't know what communism is.
You don't know what free speech is.
You don't know how to think for yourself.
You know nothing, but repeat the rhetoric your master taught you to have you in check.

I would welcome any argumentation with meaning, content, or a different point of view. But you are no more than a parrot repeating what somebody copy-pasted from Breibart news. You provably don't even know why you defend what you defend. Won't ask you to do so, since thinking for yourself takes bravery, and you have already choosen to elt others think for you.

I'm sorry for you. Keep your ignorance to yourself and don't bother answering.

Ok so I know we are pretty divided here politically, liberals and conservatives, and Trump people. But as gamers can we agree that this is unfair censorship. Can we agree to stick together on this should any politician decide one day to target video games again the way they did back after the Sandy Hook shooting? Even if we generally like that politician?

I just read what happens, there is no girl getting raped, you get raped by a girl monster, too funny

with censors citing a scene in which a female monster sexually assaults the player's character during a "ritualistic" sex scene.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@wretch1d: Wow I'm glad you think rape is freakin' hilarious. It happens to men and it's always devastating no matter your gender. Also, in the game your wife is brutally raped in front of you as she screams about how much it hurts and begs the creatures to stop.

To be clear, I think censorship is a horrible idea and think adults should have a choice but it should be clear that rape is used as a plot element before you buy the game.

Avatar image for chillydream

@ocarinaofthyme: I'd like to get raped by a woman someday.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme

@chillydream: If you would like it, it's not rape. It's roleplay. Rape is never consensual by definition and is often violent.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: In real life, it's a horrible thing. In a video game where nothing that happens to your character physically effects you in real life? Things are completely different, something Australia will apparently never understand.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: I guess what I'm trying to say is that scenes like this can make a survivor relive the experience. I think it's stupid to ban a game but the player should know about it ahead of time. And mostly I was reacting to the original comment that said girl on guy rape was "too funny". It's not...this has happened to people I know and it's never pretty.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: "I guess what I'm trying to say is that scenes like this can make a survivor relive the experience"

And a first person shooter might make a veteran of war relive their experiences. So what. Shall we stop making those too? If you don't expect traumatic stuff in a horror game, what are you even playing the genre for?

Also, to address your comment about how it's never funny, please go to youtube and search for "redlettermedia denounces tosh" and watch the top result. It's not exactly safe for work, but it pointedly addresses this claim of yours.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: I never said we should stop making these games. In fact I've said the opposite multiple times. I wouldn't necessarily expect explicit rape in a horror game; if it's well known in advance I don't really have a problem with it.

And I never said it's never funny, because anything is funny in the right light. I said it's never pretty when it actually happens. But if people's first reaction to the overall concept of rape is that it's hilarious, something isn't right.

Please don't change my words to make me look like a fool.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: "I said it's never pretty when it actually happens."

When were we talking about it actually happening? I'm pretty sure we're talking about it happening in a video game.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: That was more geared toward @Wretch1d saying that girl on guy rape is funny and especially toward @chillydream saying he wanted to be raped. Neither of these comments were exclusively about the game, and the latter was referring to real life. You took my original comment out of context and changed the words, so I restated it.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: You took Wretch1d's comment of context and changed the words. He was specifically talking about what he read happens in the game, and of course you appear with "you think rape is funny!?" outrage.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: I disagreed with his original statement being funny. Perhaps I read it the wrong way but I really don't think being raped, even in a game, is funny. Scary, disturbing or different maybe. Either way, it sounds like we're both unclear on what the other person's point was and I do apologize for that much.

And for context I take sexual violence very seriously because it has happened to me, and I'm sorry. People often don't take me seriously or make rape jokes when I tell them and I've even been told it was my own fault. I've started to believe them. I'm only bringing this up because I think it helps explain my point of view.

But regardless of my own feelings, I would like to make it clear that I think adults should be able to choose to play games like this.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: You haven't even played the game - it could be unintentionally hilarious.

So first it "happened to people you know" and now it happened to you. Sorry. But don't let your own personal issues turn you into someone who needs to control the minds of everyone else. You will NEVER decide what is funny to other people.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: It's hard to tell since the game isn't out. I'm trying to see your point of view and I hope you see that. The original comment said that he read about what happens, but he clearly didn't read the whole thing because he said no women are raped in the game.

I was hoping not to reveal that I was a woman because I was afraid people wouldn't take me seriously on that alone. I'm sure you don't believe me, but it has happened to me as well as multiple people I know. It's unfortunately rather common on college campuses. But please, please, PLEASE don't imply that I'm lying about that much, because I consider lying about rape to be one of the most despicable crimes and the day I was attacked was easily the worst day of my life.

I'm not trying to decide what's funny for others...I said that I personally don't find it funny at all. And I NEVER EVER want to control the minds of others...this whole time I have been saying that censorship is a terrible idea but I think there should be an explicit warning of rape. I'm so sorry that things don't translate well over the Internet; it's hard to put an idea into words like this sometimes.

Anyway, I was mostly trying to make a statement about censorship, and I'm sorry it turned into this sh*tshow. I'm tempted to excuse myself from this website entirely because I feel like I'm ruining the experience for others by sharing my opinion. It's too bad really.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@ocarinaofthyme: I honestly don't mind who you are, you tried to tone police other people's minds and their sense of humors. You never led with "well to me it isn't funny" you tried to guilt others into accepting your standards. If you don't like this game, that's fine. If you don't like what content they featured in it, that's fine too! I probably wouldn't like it either. But no need to try and shame others for finding it funny. Maybe this person won't even find it funny if they play the game. Who knows.

But we *are* talking about video games here. I don't mean to be harsh, but there's no need to try and bring in the "but what about real life it's so horrible and so are you for laughing!" train of thought. Video games has suffered more than enough of that lately. Now I'm going to go back to brutally murdering dozens of men in Nioh and laughing when one of the enemies falls down off a ledge and breaks his neck while letting out a hilarious scream.

Avatar image for ocarinaofthyme
OcarinaOfThyme

@Thanatos2k: If you don't see the inaccuracies in his statement that's fine. I mostly wanted to correct, share my view and move on. But if you won't even acknowledge my main argument or the various straw man statements you said made to make me look bad then I'm done here. You argued with a lot of things I didnt even say. How could you possibly know my intentions...

After my first comment I was pretty much finished saying what I wanted to about the original commenter. I reacted mostly out of shock. What really ticked me off was the guy who said he would like to get raped by a woman in real life after that. Is it so hard to see why a survivor might get upset when people laugh about real life rape?

I'd rather not argue for the sake of arguing anymore and again I'm sorry it came to this. I was hoping to start a conversation about censorship and politics and maybe figure out why people think it's funny if they haven't even seen the game yet. I realize now that I came across as harsh initially, but that has little effect on what I had to say after that.

I'm not sure it was tone policing either...there is barely any tone in the written word and I think that starts a lot of disagreements like this. If it's clearly an opinion I shouldn't have to state that every single time I say something controversial.

@Thanatos2k: Are you trying to convince or kidding yourself with this statement, that you are not affect at all from the shit you are experiencing during your game-play? Things can't be never completely different(separated) from your real life because the choices you are making in game are most of the time reflection from your real you, unless... you have a button to switch on and off to your feelings when you play games(but why would you that :)) or you are total sociopath, then again if that is the case it won't matter what you are doing in games and in your real life.

Thing is lately people are more and more prone to the games with violence sexual deviations and amoral crap i mean look at the games lately you've got to play as a serial killer...etc.

What would be contradictory is if you play any games where your character kills things, and claim that you are not a murderer in real life. Well, are you? Is the real you a heartless killer?
