Oscars 2018: Gal Gadot, Mark Hamill, And More Interrupt Movie Screening With Snacks
Hot dogs for everyone!
Every year, the Oscars takes a break somewhere in the middle of the telecast to introduce a little bit of comedy. Whether it's Ellen DeGeneres going viral with her Oscars selfie or pizza being ordered for everyone in the audience, there's always an attempt at making a memorable moment.
For the 2018 Oscars, though, host Jimmy Kimmel took things a step further when he took a small group of movie stars away from the Oscars stage to the movie theater next door. As this is the 90th Academy Awards, Kimmel thought it would be appropriate to say thanks to the people who keep them employed--the audience. To do that, Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot, along with Lupita Nyong'o, Mark Hamill, Ansel Elgort, Armie Hammer, Margot Robbie, Emily Blunt, Guillermo del Toro, and Lin-Manuel Miranda armed themselves with snacks and interrupted a preview screening of A Wrinkle in Time.
ONLY AT THE #OSCARS: @jimmykimmel led a group of movie stars to a nearby theatre, surprised the audience with a hotdog cannon, expressed Hollywood's appreciation for moviegoers, and selected one viewer to introduce the next presenters. https://t.co/lJd891ISOk pic.twitter.com/Vho76WCx1T— ABC News (@ABC) March 5, 2018
It was Gadot and Kimmel who walked into the theater first, shocking the unsuspecting crowd. Then, Elgort and Hammer arrived with hot dog cannons--yes, really--while Miranda and del Toro carried a six-foot sub sandwich, and everyone else carried baskets filled with movie treats. The bit was easily one of the best moments of the Oscars, and not just because Wonder Woman (Gadot) and Luke Skywalker (Hamill) were working together with Nakia (Nyong'o) and Harley Quinn (Robbie).
Once the snacks were passed out, Kimmel even had one bearded member of the audience take over hosting duties for a moment, letting him introduce the next presenters--Maya Rudolph and Tiffany Haddish, whose name he had some trouble with.
It's easy to dismiss moments like this in an awards show that's already very long. Without audiences, though, the movies nominated and winning wouldn't exist. You can take a look at the movie star invasion above. Then make sure to check out the full list of winners.
