Originally Expected in 2015, New Torment Now Delayed to 2017

"We know it's frustrating to wait a little longer."

Torment: Tides of Numenera has been delayed again. The PC title was originally expected to debut in 2015, but was later delayed to 2016; now, it's been pushed to 2017.

In a Kickstarter update today, developer inXile said the game has reached content-complete status, meaning it is playable from start to end. However, there is still "plenty of work ahead," including implementing more polish, additional artwork and quests, and continued quality assurance efforts.

As such, Tides of Numenara is being pushed to 2017. "In the interests of giving everyone the best experience, we will be releasing Torment in early Q1 2017," inXile explained.

Also in the blog post, the developer revealed Tides of Numenara now contains around 1 million words, which is more than are in the Bible. Another reason for the delay is to give a "professional localization" team the time to complete the localization process.

"This localization is no small feat (not to mention costly!), but we have a secret weapon… we're partnering with a certain publisher to help out on this front. But who is this partner? We can't comment on that just yet… but you will learn more very soon," inXile said.

The developer went on to say it could work very hard and "crunch" to get the game out the door this November, "but doing so would mean both sacrificing the quality of our localization and would lead to a less polished game."

"We know it's frustrating to wait a little longer, but we've come this far," inXile's Brian Fargo explained. "These types of trade-offs are never easy, but from day one it's been our goal to make Torment the masterpiece you deserve."

In an effort to thank fans for their patience, inXile will make the Tides of Numenera beta available to everyone who backed the game's Kickstarter. Previously, beta access was limited to people who contributed to the campaign at higher levels.

Normal games take at least 3 years to make. It's been 3 and a couple months. I'm completely fine with them taking their time. They got waylaid a bit finishing up Wasteland 2, and that game turned out great.

@Mevrick: 1d6 = 1 roll with 6-sided dice :) basically number between 1 and 6. 2d6 is number between 2-12, 4d10 is between 4 and 20 ;)

@maniaccc: Now you see, there is so much of this crap that isn't explained in the manual or the tutorial, so you actually need to read a god damn D&D rule book to understand the game. Since you barely do any fighting in Planescape it didn't matter much, and KOTOR is intuitive enough to partially understand. But things like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights were too much for me to bare through, and I just hope this game doesn't have too much of that.

Ugh.. the same guys that took more than a year delay to deliver wasteland 2 and still it was a incomplete mess of bugs and missing dialogs with subpar gameplay, it only ended up into a money grab for inxile. I pity the guys that kickstart this.

2 more years only means this guys wasted all the money already and need to secure new funding. Hopefully it wont have 3 to 4 talents that all serve same the purpose just so they can fill the UI with talents.

@s1taz4a3l: It sounds like they've learned from their mistakes. The Director's Cut was actually a solid game. I hope that this time the plan is to skip straight to the DC the first time.

Anyone played the early access? Does it have a D&D combat system? I really dislike it, and even though I played Planescape and Knights of The Old Republic a million times over, I still have no idea what stuff like 1d6 mean.

It baffles me how much localisation can affect a game's success. I mean, most localisations are done in languages of major European countries where a lot of people speak English anyway. If someone translated a game in my native tongue I'd still prefer to play it in English.

@pug987: I agree. I reached almost native tongue level of English at a young age mostly from playing games. I wouldn't play in my language even if it was offered. Waste of development time in my idea, since people are excepted to know English these days.

@Mevrick: Because games like these heavily focus on text for lore, progress and depth, and mediocre localization can and possibly will ruin the immersion.

It's a thing with most RPGs. Even games like sword art online: hollow fragment would be more enjoyable had it not been in really bad engrish, and that game was fun to begin with.

@Doomerang: Not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing? If this is a text heavy game than it's even more apparent that localisations aren't needed in my opinion. I just think that people that play games with a lot of reading probably know how to read English, so why waste so much effort on translations?

Is there anyone here that plans on playing this game not using the English settings?

Now let's hope their fan base is a mature one and won't send them death threats and throw rotten food on their cars.

Seriously, that would suck for them (who the heck keeps rotting food in their house long enough to find a target to throw it at nowadays anyway?).

It is kind of annoying, but I think it'll be worth it. Planescape Torment was a fantastic, and criminally underrated game. I'd much rather have it get the time and attention it needs than have something half-ass cranked out.

@bluefox755: I don't see how it's underrated, given it's widely considered the best RPG of all time.

@bluefox755: It reviewed incredibly well, and is quite widely regarded among cRPG fans as one of the best cRPGs (is the best RP experience games have offered thus far, by my standing), especially from those more story-focused of us. Certainly it didn't see the sales of the likes of BG, but was still profitable.

@jecomans: That's what I was referring to. It only sold a fraction of what Baldur's Gate did, explaining why it never got a sequel. The game is kind of known for being way better than the sales reflect.

Based on what I played earlier in the year, when it was in a pretty poor state, this games quality is supreme enough to make it a true successor to Planescape: Torment, and I wouldn't care how long it was delayed if it means it is presented as well as it can be.

I guess I've learnt that even with a team working on a game, just polishing it can sometimes take one and a half years :)
