ZDNet Japan reports that Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is planning to launch an online shopping site under the domain name Playstation.com. This will be a part of the company's e-Distribution strategy, in which the company supply downloadable games for the PS2 through a cable TV/Internet network starting in the year 2001.

Playstation.com is currently the official web site of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). Starting in February 2000, the web site will host online shopping where customers can order both PlayStation and PlayStation2 hardware and software.

At this point, online shopping will only be available for Japanese customers in conjunction with the launch of the Sony PlayStation2 in Japan on March 4, 2000. Whether online shopping for North America and Europe will be available later the same year is not yet known. We'll keep you posted.
