Following last month's announcement that Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive are working on a sequel to their popular squad-based shooter Operation Flashpoint, Codemasters has today revealed that Operation Flashpoint 2 will be set in three different theaters of combat. The game, which will see gamers participating in fictional conflicts inspired by authentic events during the years around 1970, will feature environments in Southeast Asia, Central Europe, and Africa.

"We want to create a game set in realistic theaters but not tied to any single historical event," said Marek Spanel, project leader for the game at Bohemia Interactive Studio "The theaters selected for Operation Flashpoint 2 will provide for a great variety of combat environments and draw players into a thoroughly believable experience where every element of tactical combat is important."

Codemasters has also revealed that a portion of the game's campaign will focus on events from the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, when US forces in South Vietnam numbered over half a million. Missions in the game will see players commanding squads of soldiers and engaging in solo action, and players will also be able to commandeer vehicles in the game, including helicopters and planes.

Operation Flashpoint 2 is currently scheduled for release toward the end of next year. For more information, take a look at our previous coverage of the game, and be sure to check for updates during our live E3 coverage next week.
