Polish developer Techland (Dead Island) announced today that its open-world zombie game, Dying Light, will be released on January 27 in North America, January 28 in Australia and New Zealand, and January 30 in Europe and Asia. That's slightly ahead of schedule, as the game was previously pegged to launch sometime in February 2015.

No Caption Provided

Originally, however, the game was scheduled to arrive this fall. When it's released, Dying Light will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Dying Light is available for preorder today, and doing so gets you a mode called Be the Zombie. In this mode, you play as a special breed of extra-deadly zombie called the Night Hunter that is super fast and agile. Your task is to seek out and kill human players.

In addition to Dying Light, Techland is working on hack-and-slash game Hellraid. For more on Dying Light, check out GameSpot's previous coverage. If you're more into Techland's Dead Island series, there are multiple new games in that series in development, though none of them are being made by Techland.

I'm done with zombie games until they can take away the "kill a thousand zombies" arcade feel and put back the survival horror. Remember when one or two zombies were dangerous because you were lucky to have a couple of bullets and a combat knife?

@Gravity_Slave Obviously you've never actually played any of these games.

At level 50 in Dead Island, and at level 70 in Riptide, one single zombie can easily kill you if you aren't paying attention. A pack of them will quickly kill you. The same applies to DayZ, 7 Days to Die, State of Decay, Resident Evil, and pretty much every other modern zombie game.

@Gravity_Slave Survival-Horror doesn't work in Co-Op. This game, and the Dead Island games that came before it, are INTENTIONALLY action-oriented, intended to be played in Co-Op. I can't even imagine the tedium of playing through either DI game without friends in tow -- none of these can/should be approached as SP.

Similarly, the few times anyone has tried to make a co-op Horror-themed game, the entire horror/scary element is completely removed by having someone else there.

I had a blast with those games playing them all by myself! Don't forget, there are some near 50 year olds out here playing video games while the rest of my generation arn't. And sorry, but I can't get into friending people I don't actually know so I'm left to games as a single player. However, I do like me some MP FPS PVP shooter competition every once in awhile.

Games like Dead Rising just made the genre silly and predictable. What's the point of mowing down a hundred zombies at a time? You're suppose to be afraid of zombies, not laugh at them. No challenge, no fear, no apprehension, no fun.

@Gravity_Slave I agree 100%.

Out of all the zombie games I think Telltale's The Walking Dead is still the best. This is the only game where I really care about the characters and even a single zombie can be a threat, if you're making a bad move.

I don't want the zombie apocalypse to feel like an amusement park.

Oh, and of course The Last of Us, how I can I forget that one. I'm a sucker for good storytelling and these two games are doing a perfect job imho.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm not saying games like Dying Light and Dead Rising don't have a place, because they're fun games... I just prefer a different, more "realistic" (realistic and zombies? lol) approach to the zombie genre I guess.

I just think Gravity_Slave is right... new good zombie games, that are focusing on the survival aspect, are hard to find these days. Action focused (arcady) zombie games seems to be the trend now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> well I liked that game because it was so ridiculous. I wouldn't say it made the whole genre silly, but i can see what you mean. as far as the challenge, dying light seems to give that you with the day/night cycle. Even if you still don't like it, i'm sure the zombie genre will still be there and deliver a game you are hoping for eventually

Hmm they better not release a bug ridden game just to get cash earlier, am not interested in the zombies but the free run in this game reminds me of mirrors edge a bit.

I was looking forward to this until I saw the pre-order perk of "be the zombie". I probably wouldn't play it as much as the base game, but it's a shame that the good news was only followed by the bad. I had hoped preorder culture hadn't worsened past gun skins and whatnot, now they're cutting out entire modes.

This isn't a new thing unfortunately. I'm sure a month after release it'll be available for $5-$10. I'd rather wait and pay that if the game is good instead of potentially wasting $60 on a bad game.

This game will be hard pressed to beat DayZ. Oh wait... no they won't. DayZ doesn't even have functioning Zeds after all this time and sometimes it seems like it never will.

Errr, I wouldn't call this ahead of schedule. It's still a delay. Geez, they need to pick a date and stick with it.

The City of Moresby from Dead Island 1 gave me some of the greatest zombie survival memories. I look forward to the atmosphere Dying Light is capable of offering.
