One Switch Per Household? No, Nintendo Wants "Every Single Person" To Buy One

That is Nintendo's "ultimate ambition" for the system.

Nintendo has announced plans for a new Switch marketing strategy focused around showing that "every single person" should buy the system instead of having one per household.

In a recent Q&A with investors, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto talked about the company's plans to help the Switch reach a wider base. "The marketing strategy going forward is to instill a desire to purchase Nintendo Switch among a wide consumer base in all regions of Japan, the US, and Europe," he said. On a longer timeline, Miyamoto explained that Nintendo's "ultimate ambition" is for a Nintendo Switch "to be owned not just by every family, but by every single person."

What makes the Switch so appealing, Miyamoto said, is its hybrid nature. The more Switch consoles there are in the market--instead of just one per household--the more types of new genres and play patterns that could theoretically exist, Miyamoto said. He went on to say that if Nintendo is successful, people might elect to play Switch games on the go instead of smartphone games.

"If consumers come to take it for granted that everybody has a Nintendo Switch, then we can create new and very Nintendo genres of play, and Nintendo Switch can have a life apart from smart devices and other video game systems," Miyamoto explained.

Nintendo managing executive director Shinya Takahashi added, "The question going forward is how to convey the allure of Nintendo Switch to a wider range of age groups, regardless of gender." Takahashi added that Nintendo Labo--a wacky, wonderful, and weird project involving actual cardboard--is one part of Nintendo's plan to address the "issue" of broadening the Switch's playerbase.

The Switch is already off to a hot start, selling 14.86 million systems by Nintendo's latest count. In fact, the Switch needed just 10 months to outsell the lifetime sales tally of its predecessor, the Wii U, which sold around 13.5 million units.

Nintendo switch is quite expensive to begin with, games on it aren't cheap and games library is a bit limited at present. It's OK to dream but they should make an effort to address these issues if this dream is to become a reality

"The marketing strategy going forward is to instill a desire to purchase Nintendo Switch among a wide consumer base in all regions of Japan, the US, and Europe." You want to instill a desire to a wider consumer base so that everyone in the world buys a nintendo switch? Its extremely simple. Make the Nintendo Switch $99.99 Its that simple.

@chrono99: Err, not really that simple. That'd be a huge loss if it backfired, which odds are would be the most probable outcome.

Okay, I'll try to convince my paralyzed uncle and grandpa with Alzheimer's to get a Switch too...and of course, the rest of my family too since they're not much of gamers.

Bust open the vault of virtual console games and that'll help. I still play PSX games on Vita for example.

But, the day SMT V comes out, is the only day I buy a switch.

If Nintendo hopes to have more than a Switch per household, maybe they should consider allowing "Download play" like on 2/3DS.
Download play allows you to play multiplayer games localy on a single game cartridge.

Let's say me and my son both have a switch and want to play Mario Kart we should be able to do so with a single cartridge would be appealing!

I bought the Mario Party Top100 on 3Ds and they allow just that!
You buy 1 game cartridge and you can play up to 4 players on it using DownloadPlay.

Nice feature that should be considered for Switch!

Ehh...maaaybe.

Software wise it's doing pretty good, but I'm noticing more Single-Player games, which is fine, but I feel that The Switch would benefit more with more Multi-Player focused games, Sure we got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Pokken Tournament DX, but on top of them being re-releases from the Wii U, (which is quite fine since the Wii U bombed and a lot of good games were on there) There needs to be some new multi-player focused games. Honestly, i feel the Switch would benefit for a new F-Zero, get a new 'proper' Animal Crossing game on there, and Mario Party is a game that's just begging for an Online component. Couple that with re-releasing Smash 4 (which you know they will sooner or later)

That’s not realistic if you have no family game sharing between multiple consoles..

@girlusocrazy: Physical média for the switch is so cumbersome, changing cartridges with the system docked is awful... for a portable console digital is the only way to go.

Sorry Nintendo, I'll stick with my 3DS for handheld. The switch looks uncomfortable to play with.
And Play all the other games on my X1, Ps4 and PC ;)

(Ps: If you have a switch or if you are going to buy one, buy a screenprotector!)

@aromain150: I rather not spend 350 bucks on a handheld. Specially not with those specs. I'll wait for the Next-Gen Nintendo console.

@DeadPhoenix86: You have to admit, those specs are incridible for a handheld. For me it is a good deal because I am a voyager. But I can understand your oppinion. nintendo switch isn't cheap.

@aromain150: Wolf 2, Doom, Skyrim, all games that play better on higher end experiences and are horrible ports. You would be far off saying Zelda isn't a kids game - it's a fantastic game all around.

@Utnayan: Horrible? Dude those games runs at 30 fps... Don't expect 60 fps like on pc from a handheld. The performance are nearby the ps4 and xbox one and this is impressive for a handheld. I am a voyager so for me, switch and gaminglaptop are my perfect gamingcombination. (ps: I am not far saying zelda isn't a kids game, it is maybe overrated but the kids I know doesn't even get further than the first part of the game #toohardforkids)

Shouldn't be hard. They've already programed it to send out subliminal signals only children can hear that say "Fight each other every time one of your brothers plays this until your mother caves in and buys another one."

If they wanted to do that then they should of also incorporated the android play store into their OS and sold some cheaper without the dock.

I’ve been borrowing one from my friend for the past couple of months. I’ve played it maybe a total of 10 hours. That’s on Zelda. It’s honestly an overrated game. Not even top 10 of the best games I’ve played. That console is a complete waste for everyone I know who has it. Several friends have it, and all they play is their PS4. It’s just not an interesting system. It’s only selling well right now, because pretty much everyone who wants a PS4 or Xbox One has one already. Nintendo would’ve been dead in the water if it released when the PS4 did.

@frosty988: Zelda is not top 10 games anyone played, but it arguably the best from last year (my personal favorite is Divinity Original Sin 2) and the best Zelda since ocarina, which many people have on their best game of all time. Now that game is only good in large doses imo, so i don't really see it as a switch game as i only play that game docked, all other games i play handheld for the most part.

@frosty988: with respect try looking at the system from a mobile point of view too, the vita or DS doesn't come close (though they do have some top class software which iv enjoyed and still am).

Many people may view it as a hardware living room console, its made to take with you and carry on the fun, mobile.

iv just got one for Christmas, and though Zelda doesn't do anything ground breaking, when you take it with you it does, i for one wanted GTA on the go and we kinda got it with the liberty city stories, and other under par ps1 looking games, the switch delivers DOOM, Wolfenstein, BAyonetta 1&2 on the go (all be at 30 frames)!!!!

With a larger screen, two player split screen, its a good concept.

Have a nice day

@naiko: It’s not worth putting anymore time into. It shouldn’t take over 10 hours for a game to get good. If I’m gonna play an open world game, might as well stick with The Witcher 3. I’ve beaten it a couple times and would still rather play through it again than finish Zelda.

@naiko: I know, unless you’ve never heard of Nintendo or Zelda in which case ur dead or from outer space, it’s the name that says quality gaming and longevity from the humble beginnings.

I’m barely 10 hours into it (got it for Xmas along with the other physical titles on switch).
