Destiny, Bungie's much-anticipated "shared-world" shooter, has finally arrived, and it's here to stay, according to publisher Activision. Speaking with CVG, Activision UK & Ireland general manager Roy Stackhouse said Bungie has designed the Destiny IP in such a way that it will endure for what could be as long as ten years.

"I think if you look at what we're trying to achieve with Destiny, we're basically putting out an IP that we believe is going to be around for an awful long time," Stackhouse said. "We've focused on making it very immersive--both in the campaign and in the multiplayer--and we've already announced the first expansion pack that's on it's way this year. We view this as an IP we want in the market for a very long time."

Destiny's first expansion pack, The Dark Below, will launch in December. Another piece of add-on content, currently referred to as Expansion II, will follow sometime later. Both expansions are included with the $35 Destiny Expansion Pass, or can be purchased individually for $20 each.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said last week that Bungie is thinking about a Lord of the Rings-sized story for Destiny that will unfold over the period of a decade. In 2010, Bungie signed a 10-year, exclusive publishing deal with Activision for a new franchise that we now know is Destiny.

Also in the interview, Stackhouse addressed the report that Activision had invested $500 million in Destiny. He pointed out that this figure covers development, manufacturing, and other areas, so, "it sounds like a big amount, but it doesn't just fuel one aspect." Stackhouse also said that this level of investment, half a billion dollars, "shows the confidence that we have in Destiny." He's also optimistic that Destiny will be well-received. "There's every indication that the launch will be something everyone will enjoy," he said.

Destiny launches today for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. It could sell as many as 15 million copies this year alone, according to one analyst. For more on the title, check out a replay of GameSpot's Destiny livestream marathon (above), and our review-in-progress.

Destiny 2 should start 40 years later, when the earth has been mostly won back, and many territories have been recaptured on the moon, Mars and Venus. You start with a different character who has a more likeable and funny ghost (still voiced by Dinklage, but explain it away by saying the ghosts adapt to their guardian's personality because it provides solid tactical and even emotional support). Also add the following new worlds:

Ganymede- Jupiter's moon, very similar to earth.

Io- Jupiter's moon, a volcanic hellish world that has regressed to rubble since humans left it at the end of the golden age.

Enceladus - Saturn's moon, humans turned this giant snowball into a thriving water world, but it is turning back into a giant ice ball. Giant geysers riddle the icy parts of the surface.

They mean to say that it's the next CoD, nothing else, the game as it is now, is not worth any major updates, so a new Destiny each year that's the only way to go for them.

Destiny on a scale of 1-10:

Graphics: 8-9 (but boy it sure is pretty... this is sure to be Destiny's legacy)

Mechanics/Controls: 8 (solid)

Music/Sound: 8 (wonderful)

Story: 2 (worse than internet fanfiction - I'm thinking 7th-8th grade creative writing, had 3 weeks to complete the assignment, but didn't start till the night before, level of quality/complexity/duration)

Character development: 2 (no memorable characters, and a terrible waste of Peter Dinklage's talent)

Mission variety: 1 (there's literally one mission type - escort Dinklage to the next hacking point while killing enemy waves)

Enemy variety/Complexity: 2 (nearly all enemies are the same, sometimes with different colors, and require little to no tactics or team coordination; lackluster enemy abilities, dull AI)

Sense of exploration: 3 (absolutely no reason to explore outside of completing the obj - every level is just a cold empty box containing enemy waves)

...but boy, it sure is pretty!

yeah don't listen to the hipster hate, I'm loving Destiny so far. The combat and controls of Halo with the loot-hunting excitement of a dungeon crawler. So far so good, 8/10

<< LINK REMOVED >> The loot hunting excitement of a dungeon crawler? I'm seeing you posted this the day after the game came out. How's that excitement holding up?

Probably not so good I'm guessing.

I am loving this game. it is funny to see all these negative comments. People that have not played the game at all should just keep it quite. Bungie's forum is full of those and if you check their accounts they haven't played the game. It is just the Internet rage towards everything and everyone.....game is awesome...go play games and have fun!

Don't discount negative comments as being from those who haven't played the game. For a lot of people, myself included it's just a confirmation of everything we suspected was going to go wrong from the beta; poor to non-existent story, nothing but kill your way to point a & then deploy ghost to hack sh*t missions & an online game that's supposed to encourage co-op play with absolutely ZERO social components to the game except for dance, point & I still haven't worked out how chat works. It's $500mil of W.T.F at the moment & many, myself included are hoping that Bungie are listening.

The game is boring...the missions all blend together after a few hours. I guarantee it will end up becoming Free-To-Play in a year or two. *cough Defiance cough*

Just to sell DLC and crap. There's no doubt about it, that is exactly where this game is heading. And it's heading there real fast.

loving destiny myself, if you can make it last that long good on yeh but i do find that hard to believe at the mo, already getting to venus in under a day im looking forward to you prooving me wrong n that it could actually last the consoles life from just one game. Or is it miss infomation coming across from bungie in the way there will be more than one game to last ten years, i certainly hope not also the rumour floating around of millions of guns, a bit far fetched dont you think, they said that about borderlands n yet early on i had seen more of a veriety in that than destiny, however the graphics, gameplay and fun in this title is well worth the money if you provide the content ill support the game.. you have a winner here dont spoil it by saying things that arnt true or spoil it by not supporting all consoles equally, you have one tough job in front of you to give gamers what they need n thats a game that can outlast any other and your words, you set the bar bungie on that now we expect it from you..

I think this could be an easy thing to achieve providing the core engine to develop the game has been built with a strong enough foundation.

Think about it this way; there's currently 5 planets/areas to explore, plus multiplayer maps. Your players have a level cap of around 30 (soft cap at 20?), and three classes. There's already 2 DLC's planned in the next 12 months or so, so they have a year-one strategy already built out. You may get player drop-off along the way, but alternatively you will build a core fanbase.

Then you start to look at the long-term strategy. Each year/2 year cycle, you bring out an "expansion pack" (DLC or Physical) introducing new galaxies of planets (5 - 10 areas) to explore, including new multiplayer maps. You refresh/re-invigorate the story mode with new factions/races of alien, wars, political struggle, story arcs, etc. and the over-arching story of light vs dark. You also take the opportunity to introduce new gameplay mechanics as the nature of FPS evolves and improves. Lastly, you introduce new weapons, items, etc and you iterate the level cap (e.g. in 2 years time, players are trying to level up to 60, then 90, etc.). You can also introduce new classes as a way to introduce different play styles. Even flip it on its head and allow players to take the side of darkness (Jedi/Sith anyone)

Then it comes down to new consoles, top end PC, etc. Re-mastered editions are nothing new, and there's nothing to say this can't be done if there is a new gen of consoles that comes out. Release a Destiny ‘complete’ bundle of everything so far and then keep going... transfer player data etc.

What if you were to look at the Call of Duty series in the same way? Technically they are different games; each an iteration on the same concept (War) with the same basic mechanics (FPS) and the same offerings (Single & Multiplayer). Would we all be that skeptical of Destiny's plan if they had announced this strategy at the start of COD, and proven that gamers will play the same game year-in-year-out with only iterative differences.

Destiny is a game that can be around for 10 years. Will we still be playing the vanilla Destiny we are playing today; certainly not. But Destiny as an IP could last the distance

If only it worked like that. We are talking about BungieVision though, you know the ones that hyped up this thing as being the Second Coming of gaming, advertised all of these great story & plot elements & then just ended up releasing MMO CoD in Space.

I hope to God that all the marketing is not around for a long time as well. I think that's why so many people have given this game 0 ratings on metacritic, this game has over-marketed to the extent that it has created ill-will with many consumers.

10 years? I can max within a day and they say they'll have content for that long...unbelievable. I believe another game will certainly rise over this one, seeing as how the only reason the game will take up time is the horrible crucible multi-player mode. The game isn't awful, its just too short for the amount of resources they put into the game. Honestly, I don't know where they even could've spent half a billion on this. Was it Dinkledork's voice that cost that much? Or, was it the multiplayer mode which seems to be the only thing to do at high-end levels (which is just a cod/titanfall/you-name-it copy)? Furthermore, what kind of a cap is level 20? ITS TOO LOW!

<< LINK REMOVED >> By all means cancel your preorder, but don't put it into MGS5. Don't support the guy who tried to sell you a demo for $40. Oh sorry, not demo, a 2 hour prologue that should have been the opening act for the proper game.

But they sold it to you early to tide you over for the next year and a half, because you know, those 2 hours of gameplay will last you until then.

@Gravity_Slave ''An awful time'' Had one when the regrets of spending on this unfinshed game kicked in.

I mean ... I KNEW it was gonna be bad, I KNEW I was being lied to, that we would get fd over. When I told my friend I had regrets buying the game, my friend told me my expectations were to high... (I generally never regret buying anything even if it's pointless)

Here, I disagree, my expectations were simply too low, I never expected Activision to f us over so dam bad ! o-o"

This game is Borderland/Warframe's retarded little brother

I don't know how long this game will last. It may be two weeks it may be a few months but somehow I doubt it will be much longer than that. Saying that a game that lasts a few months is okay in my books. COD normally gives you a five hour single player and then rinse and repeat multiplayer.

I'll have my fill then move on. I'm sure as hell not paying £35 for a DLC season pass.
