Oculus Will Cover Shipping Costs on All Rift Preorders [UPDATE]

The costs are covered because of shipping issues that caused delays.

[UPDATE #2] Oculus sent out an email to Rift customers that said because of the delays it'll cover "shipping and handling costs for all orders placed through today." Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe confirmed the screenshot and replied on Reddit with the following comment:

"Correct. We apologize for not updating you earlier. The first few batches are going out slower than we estimated, so we're giving free shipping for all pre-orders, including international."

[UPDATE] Oculus customers have reported that the shipping fee on their Rift order has been significantly reduced. We've contacted Oculus for further comment and will report back when we hear more.

The original story follows:

The Oculus Rift released this week, but it seems that many people who preordered the virtual reality headset have no idea when theirs will ship. Customers have been asking Oculus founder Palmer Luckey to let them know what's happening, and now he's addressed their pleas after one user suggested that he wasn't allowed to comment on the supposed issues because of higher-ups.

"Don't shunt blame to other people, this is my call," he said in a comment on Reddit. "I am not going to wax poetic about this, since I have done so in the past, but bottom-line: I won't give in-depth updates on any situation without knowing it is solid, true, and finalized. Until I can do so, the best I can do is remind people that I will get them information as quickly as I can."

"On the rare occasions when things still change, even when they change for reasons out of my control, I get crucified anyway," Luckey continued. "Sometimes that means updates have to wait until things get locked down, and sometimes that means waiting a little longer to give everyone good info."

When criticized for the lack of a "concise and quick" response, Luckey said "the two are completely opposed" and that "concise and accurate information is rarely the fastest or first, especially when talking about a situation with so many constantly changing variable."

No Caption Provided

The Oculus subreddit's overall tone seems to be an angry one, and when someone asked people to imagine how the subreddit would look if thousands of people had Rifts "instead of the handful now," Luckey responded with the following:

"Not very different, apparently, because there are already many thousands of Rifts out there even at this early point, with more arriving as we speak. Remember that this sub is a tiny minority of the overall VR market--70k [subscribers] is not even an accurate measure, considering how many subs are from old accounts or lurkers with no headset. The vast majority of people don't care about posting pictures or reviews of their new toy to an internet enthusiast group."

Another user accused Luckey of writing the Oculus community off, which he replied to by saying his "involvement [in the subreddit] should make [it] obvious" that he's not doing that.

"I don't think you are interpreting my comment fairly--I never said that everyone who matters is fine, I just pointed out that thousands of units in the wild don't translate into a significant difference in the direction of this subreddit, and that his perception of only a handful of Rifts being out there (which he apprently got from this sub) is inaccurate," Luckey added.

No official comment has been given on the state of Oculus Rift shipments at this time. We've contacted Oculus PR and will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

For the time being, you can check out our review and everything else you need to know about the Oculus Rift right here.

I will wait to see what kind of games come out first. I'm not saying VR is going to be a failure.... But it comes down to the games. I could be wrong but I think it will be some time until we see quality AAA titles coming out in this format. Right now nothing really interests me, so I shall wait and see.

Whats worse is they are forcing people to buy another xbox controler when most already have one. That and the wireless dongle have to add another 80$ to the package cost.

Why are people in such a rush? It's not like there's anything great to play on it right now anyways.

and lol @ Oculus subreddit thinking they're the center of the VR universe.

@Karmazyn: The only way I see it making it big is if SOMEONE foots the bill for future games. Like Sony or Oculus or Valve.

Actually force new better bigger games onto it each year.

Then as the price drops over time, maybe, it will make it.

@dexda: Sony is already footing the bill for future games. That's why PSVR is the right choice from the get go. This has always been about new software, not whether or not the latest photorealistic game engine will run in an emulation mode. Plenty of us will be happy flying through the wireframe world of Rez.

@alaskancrab: Are they? The only thing we know is they are funding the launch titles. Which so far are largely shit.

We have no idea what they will be doing in a year or two.

I mean Sony can't even support the Vita which has an established user base and more power than any hand held has ever had.

Gee, "drama queens" filling up a topic and making a shipping delay sound like a capital offence? Why, who ever heard of such a thing!? ;)

The problem isn't the Rifts going out slower than expected - it was the dead silences that customers who preordered received. The entire mess was handled poorly and could have easily been avoided.

It's called communication, Oculus. It's why so many people cancelled and went to the Vive. I'm still waiting for my Rift but the only delay that ticked me off was the one where we didn't get a status update.

Ironically I just got an email today saying there is a delay with shipping and we should have some dates/more info by Apr 12th. Apparently they figured out that delaying orders will cause them to bleed customers to other platforms. They are also going to cover shipping in some cases, but it was unclear who qualifies for that.

Wait what? People are spending hundreds of dollars on these devices and they have to pay shipping? That's insane. Usually for something this expensive, they just chuck the shipping in for free. Heck, you can get free shipping on items that cost $20. What the hell, Oculus?

@bdrtfm: early adopters economic rule applies here. If u want new shiny piece of technology to make your neighbours and friends jelous u will pay premium price and all handling charges. This is the price of earlt admission. I will personally wait two years and get hive for 35 percent less i hope.

I got this email today as well. I was a little bit dissapointed to not get a shipping confirmation today, but I wasn't really concerned about it. While the first official ship date for the Oculus was March 28th, the first wave of shipments (which I'm on) was scheduled for "April", and seeing as how it's only the 2nd of April today it's not like they are technically late. Still, I really, really want my freaking Rift. Every time I see an email from Oculus I get excited, but every email I've gotten from them so far has been telling me "we're going to send you another email to tell you when it ships". I've gotten like three of those so far...

@Byshop: I got the email as well but I was in the 2nd month (April-early May window). Right now I am happy that this issue happened as it saved me $30, but I am also worried that the 2nd batch will be delayed. Oh well, I can wait a little longer for free shipping.

@dexda: If they just added the average shipping cost to the cost of every Rift then offered "free" shipping, would that make you happier?

@Zloth2: No because that would still be us paying for it. All I'm saying is if you are buying an expensive headset already and then have to foot the bill for extra shipping as well that just seems crap.

If it was a 40+ inch TV I'd understand because that takes up significant room. I've had DVD shipments from Amazon that were bigger than the Oculus box with no shipping. And it didn't cost me $600.

I mean especially for the early adopters. They are going out of their way to give Oculus the money they need to get their device off the ground. Without them VR would be dead on arrival.

@dexda: Since they are already selling the Rift at a loss, I wouldn't expect them to take an even bigger loss by paying for shipping. From a business perspective, I don't think there would be any long term or short term payoff to the company. Companies aren't in the business to do people favors, they're in it to make money.

@drumjod: Yeah they are losing money anyway. I'd think giving the first few thousand headsets free shipping wouldn't kill them too much.

Well obviously not because that is what they are now doing.

If they can't even manage a small good will gesture this early in the game then I can't see how they are going to even make it into next year.

I mean they are making a loss on every headset so any tight budgets they have now will be worse in a year.

What a laughably immature person to be put on the front lines of public relations. What are they thinking? He clearly has no sense of how you deal with customers.

"Sorry. We're working as hard as we can to get them shipped and I'll update you with more information as soon as it becomes available to me."

But instead he's there getting into reddit arguments about how things aren't as bad as they seem. And whining about being "crucified." Give me a break.

I know many of you identify with his response, but that's because you're equally immature and unsuited for public relations.

It's not about being right, or winning arguments. It's about keeping your customers happy. No place for egos.

@autumnvarela: To be honest I kind of prefer a more human response, rather than a carbon cut "we are working hard to fix the problem" bullshit. I just seems more honest. This is why Trump is so damn popular despite being a nutcase.

I couldn't handle dealing with "internet people" all day every day if I ran a company online like these guys do. If punching morons through a monitor could really happen, I would need a monitor building plant in my back room because I would be going through them like no ones business.

Oh people of the internet, how impatient, needy and annoying you are. Buy it and WAIT until it's ready. People with actual thought capabilities would know that this is a new product and that there was only so many made (and that they are probably making as many as they possibly can 24/7 to fill demand) and that you might just have to wait for yours...
