UPDATE: Facebook stepped in to officially debunk this rumor from the New York Times. Facebook has no plans on redesigning the Oculus interface or logo to reflect the recent acquisition.

The original story appears below.

Facebook's acquisition of Oculus VR has reportedly led to plans for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to be rebranded with a Facebook interface and logo.

No Caption Provided

According to The New York Times, a source involved in the deal revealed that Facebook will "eventually" redesign the Oculus Rift hardware to use the social media platform's logo and interface.

The social media company announced its acquisition of Oculus VR earlier today. The buyout is worth an estimated $2 billion. Following the news, Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey explained why the deal makes sense.

The news was met with a particularly strong reaction from Minecraft creator Notch, who proceeded to cancel development for the Oculus Rift version of Minecraft.

The fact is, Facebook can do what the hell they like with this tech, since they own it outright.

As for a logo across the front, who gives a damn.

Take my money now.

What would "using a Facebook interface" even *mean* for a VR headset!? The logo thing at least is plausible but an interface?? Media Fail.

I was going to say that there's no way I'd buy anything with the facebook logo stamped right across it, but in reality I'm not going to buy it anyway. I'll never knowingly give facebook any of my dosh.

Good job on the click-baiting Gamespot...

According to my source over at the local potato-peelery I was told the facebookulus rift is also being fitted with some robotic arms designed to massage the stress from your temples as you fight furiously to shoot 3D "thumb ups"....

I should really apply to Gamespot.

Well at least the all seeing eye similarity part of the logo will fit right into their hive mind mentality.

If you read the actual deal , it included 400 million cash plus 21.6 million shares of facebook stock ( 1.6 billion dollars ) . So why be worried, Oculus could just buy 28,4 million more shares and take controlling share of facebook if they don't like where facebook is taking them . I don't see Facebook making bad choices with Oculus !. Personally it helps get the VR headset closer into production that way devs can come out with games.

Even though I'm happy for Occulus because it secures their technology, well, carrying the Facebook logo on me is a turn off.

At least you can always paint it or cover it with stickers.

I love it, Facebook that you wear. I had a feeling that this pile would turn out to be nothing more than a Virtual Boy on steroids.

There's your future of gaming. Enjoy.

Will the Oculus Rift units without such a logo then become valuable items and sold for lots of money on ebay? Or is the fact that Facebook now owns Oculus enough to sink demand and make people only buy it after it has been improved and gotten a reduced price?

Something tells me that this story is a half-truth. It seems a little early for something like this to be a solid decision. The OR is more akin to a monitor than a computer. What "interface?" A Facebook branded interface would likely be used in Facebook software. If you're using the OR to play a game, you'll be using the game's interface. Granted, they could interface the hardware with a proprietary application, but that would be hacked before the hardware even hits shelves.

Completely lost all interest in the OR now. I had high hopes, but I'll wait for the other VR clones to start coming out. I imagine some engineers already have something down the line that could compete well against this monstrosity of a merger.

Oh well, as many have implied: it was cool while it lasted.

Does anyone know what Facebook wants to do with this tech yet? I mean, does anyone here want to view Facebook as an all-encompassing interface? I'm just fine with it being on my monitor.

I still had hope until I read "Facebook Interface". Notch was right to back out immediately. We'll just have to hope for another to make our dreams come true.

The speculation about the future of VR was fun while it lasted. Hopefully Sony's VR doesn't completely bomb.

To all the apologists, just leave.

Go.

Get the **** out of here before we rip you apart to pieces.

For everyone else, we already knew that Facebook would ruin the Oculus Rift and this news just confirms it.
