Oculus Rift's Recommended PC Specs, Resolution Announced

Here's the setup you'll need to get the "full Rift experience."

While Oculus VR is still keeping the Oculus Rift's price under wraps, the company on Friday cleared up another major lingering question about the device. In a blog post, Oculus revealed the Rift's recommended PC specifications. To get the "full Rift experience," the following system setup is recommended.

No Caption Provided
  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output (required)
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports (required)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer (required)

"The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience on this configuration," Oculus explained. "Ultimately, we believe this will be fundamental to VR's success, as developers can optimize and tune their game for a known specification, consistently achieving presence and simplifying development."

Previously, Oculus vice president Nate Mitchell said about the Rift's system requirements: "You're going to want a nice gaming rig. We're not talking about a high-end, crazy computer, but something that would run modern games well today."

For a much deeper dive into Rift's PC requirements, check out this detailed blog post from Oculus chief architect Atman Binstock. He says the configuration mentioned above "will be held for the lifetime of the Rift," and notes that price should drop over time if you need to upgrade your existing setup.

Binstock also revealed resolution details for the Rift consumer model.

"On the raw rendering costs: a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second," he explained. "At the default eye-target scale, the Rift's rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.

Read Binstock's full blog post here.

The Rift consumer model launches in the first quarter of 2016, meaning it will arrive before April. As mentioned above, pricing has not been announced, but Oculus said today that fans can expect "more news" about the device in the lead-up to E3 next month.

Joining Rift next year will be Sony's PlayStation 4 headset, Project Morpheus. Meanwhile, the ViveVR headset, from Valve and HTC, is due to launch later this year. Pricing for both headsets has not been announced.

What this tells me is that project morpheus is either for PS5 or it will not work too well with the PS4 cause the rift requires so much more power than available in this gen consoles.

@Aleperez75: It will work on PS4 but the graphics won't be as good as Oculus. The games will be simple looking. Oculus will look like modern PC games.

Oculus vs Morpheus will be like PS3/360 vs Wii. The Wii's graphics don't compare, but it had a higher install base because of cheaper price and wider appeal.

A PS4 costs less than a PC, so I think they have that in their favor. And a lot more people already have PS4s, as opposed to GTX970s.

Oculus is the superior tech, but it will come at a much higher cost. Which one will sell better though? The Wii and PS2 have shown us that inferior tech can win out in sales.

@Aleperez75: It will be for ps4, it just will be crazy expensive because it needs its own onboard processing hardware to render it.

@greenpolyp: I can promise you right now that the PlayStation VR will not sell very high numbers if it has a crazy expensive price. It's a peripheral that simply offers another way to experience a game. Not something that offers more GPU, CPU, RAM power etc.

Well that's me out. Guess I'll wait for Morpheus and considering that is Sony probably won't be able to afford that either.

@lambazelda: the console guys don't realize how quickly tech changes in the PC-verse. It's actually kind of nice for them, they just buy a box and it plays games for a decade lol. I mean, I can do that too.. but I have to overclock after year 7 and turn down settings by year 5.

Ouch. Not too many people are going to have a rig beefy enough to push that. At least many will require a new GPU. And yet they managed to make a VR mobile phone. And Sony is bringing VR to PS4. Either OR's version is a super amazing experience or the other 2 are vomit inducing nightmares.

@Darkangel2154: wait until 2016 when it's released. Then get a GPU with loads of VRAM!

@Saidrex: Yeah there's only that VR set coming from a company that has close to 20 studios. No big deal, you can always play Farmville on your FaceBook VR.

@alaskancrab@Saidrex: Yeah but, what quality are we talking here? The PS4's GPU is a glorified calculator compared to a 980. Not sure what kind of frame rate and rez we are going to see from Project Morpheus. Might have to change the name to Projectile Morpheus due to the projectile vomiting people will be doing.

@rolento25@bdrtfm@alaskancrab@Saidrex: Google yourself. 120 fps is meaningless if it makes the graphics look worse. Until I actually see a PM headsets capabilities, I'll be healthily skeptical.

Look at the name of the site, it was to be expected. That's why i don't go to Geforce.com or AMD to have opinions on graphics cards.

@StHapns247: There are already games that support it, though they don't even have a reason to at this time.

Then the recommend GPU is a 290 or 970 both will be bottlenecked by anything AMD FX so it seems they will have a lesser experience than the blue team.

@demonkingx5:
While this is true for stock speeds of the FX series it no longer holds true once overclocked. My FX 8320 was a major bottleneck for my R9 290 at stock speeds but once overclocked to 4ghz and over that bottleneck all but vanishes.

@demonkingx5@vtoshkatur: I'm guessing there is a reason the FX isn't on the list. They'll probably add AMD once their new HMB chips make it to market.

@alaskancrab@demonkingx5@vtoshkatur: maybe AMD Zen should be comparble to Haswell FX architecture is old & outdated its IPC is comparable to a 5 year old intel CPU. but zen seems to not be heading on a different path which is good.

Very reasonable requirements. Don't think I'll ever buy into a head set though.
