Oculus Rift's Recommended PC Specs, Resolution Announced

Here's the setup you'll need to get the "full Rift experience."

While Oculus VR is still keeping the Oculus Rift's price under wraps, the company on Friday cleared up another major lingering question about the device. In a blog post, Oculus revealed the Rift's recommended PC specifications. To get the "full Rift experience," the following system setup is recommended.

No Caption Provided
  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output (required)
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports (required)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer (required)

"The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience on this configuration," Oculus explained. "Ultimately, we believe this will be fundamental to VR's success, as developers can optimize and tune their game for a known specification, consistently achieving presence and simplifying development."

Previously, Oculus vice president Nate Mitchell said about the Rift's system requirements: "You're going to want a nice gaming rig. We're not talking about a high-end, crazy computer, but something that would run modern games well today."

For a much deeper dive into Rift's PC requirements, check out this detailed blog post from Oculus chief architect Atman Binstock. He says the configuration mentioned above "will be held for the lifetime of the Rift," and notes that price should drop over time if you need to upgrade your existing setup.

Binstock also revealed resolution details for the Rift consumer model.

"On the raw rendering costs: a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second," he explained. "At the default eye-target scale, the Rift's rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.

Read Binstock's full blog post here.

The Rift consumer model launches in the first quarter of 2016, meaning it will arrive before April. As mentioned above, pricing has not been announced, but Oculus said today that fans can expect "more news" about the device in the lead-up to E3 next month.

Joining Rift next year will be Sony's PlayStation 4 headset, Project Morpheus. Meanwhile, the ViveVR headset, from Valve and HTC, is due to launch later this year. Pricing for both headsets has not been announced.

@CarloGD: Why would they be out of business? All it means is that oculus won't work on consoles, which means it will be a tough sell because there are more consoles than GTX970s.

You have to understand how VR works and only then you will see the requirements as a blessing. Rendering games twice at 1080p is not a simple task at all, so the fact that you don’t need a dual top of line card is great news.

Not impressed

Samsung Gear VR with the S6/Edge "can" run 2k or Quad HD if devs choose.

As Spartan stated... they have 2 iterations of the Gear VR... and suprisingly its cheaper than expected. Although right now Virtual Reality as a whole is a ninch product.

@Spartan_418@pongley: Still requires buying something that's more than the price of the Rift (by a long shot), in addition to buying the Gear headset.

2160x1200@90Hz is a lot lower resolution than I expected. I expected 2560x1440 (the resolution of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screen) or higher.

Something important mentioned in the blog that wasn't covered here is Atman Binstock's statement about current rendering technology having been built for high-fidelity rendering effects instead of rendering speed. That video card manufacturers have opted to make their cards put more through longer and longer rendering pipelines at the cost of adding more video latency, and that the manufacturers will have to change their priorities for VR. In the future, Nvidia or AMD could opt to make a VR-focused card that forgoes all the bells and whistles in favor of quick response streamlined piplines. That'd be hella-cool.

@elheber: I'm surprised Nvidia didn't announce one at GDC last year. Maybe they're both waiting to see where the dust settles so they can swoop in and take the hardcore market, which is probably where most of the money is anyway.

Don't have a problem with the minimum specs at all. Whether I'll actually pick one up is another matter entirely, not really hyped.

@ecter1216: you have to think that not evryone lives in your same country and town, some people got it harder for 1 reason or the other, and it's related to your own cash or the country economical status, that's why, if you got that covered then happy for you enjoy (=

@SsjChrisKo@bdrtfm@luert@ecter1216: What kind of backwards thinking is that? You can't afford it so don't read or learn about it? Gee, thanks for telling others to stifle their interests and stay ignorant. While you're at it, how about crushing their spirits even further and tell them not to try to push forward and better themselves since that might stretch their bottom line. What you said is so far beyond pretentious and condescending that I can almost guarantee that if you were to say the same thing to someone's face they'd either verbally berate you or chin-check you on the spot.

It is thinking that is obviously well beyond the scope of your understanding.

The context is and was someone having to choose between pc hardware and food.

If you honestly think someone that is borderline starving should be researching on the oculus rift and worrying if they can afford a new gpu to play a damn game, instead of working to afford food shelter and clothing then you yourself might one day be starving while reading gamespot articles.

Use your brain before taking things out of context in a pathetic attemp to defend the financially self oppressed.

@SsjChrisKo: Use your brain and actually try to have some understanding that there is a huge swath of gray between the extremes of being able to afford a solid gaming rig AND the oculus rift to being hard pressed on necessities. The original comment was asking why anyone would not have those specs and there are myriad reasons that would answer that question. Just because someone can't afford a gaming rig doesn't make them destitute. There priorities could just lie elsewhere. They could be a working college student, saving up for a car, some kind of medical procedure might be in there future, etc. The point is it's not up for you to decide if someone should or shouldn't be reading up on an interest of their's, whether they can actually afford it or not. Even when hard up, one doesn't work ALL the time and if they have an internet capable device to be able to access this or any other article they're probably not that bad off anyway.

Actually no, you as many others are trying to inject your social opinions in places they do not fit or belong.

It is clear what comment I responded to, and it is clear both the message I responded to and my own had simple meanings.

Yet people like and as you chime in to say that it is wrong and that you are greatly offended when someone speaks plainly.

If you think the oculus rift is something everyone can afford and that things should be changed so that everyone regardless of financial ability should be able to afford it, you literally live in a dream world.

I will as a gift even dumb down and summarize the entire conversation for you.

OP: I don't think the specs are too high I easily have them covered. Why would anyone not have these covered if they are viewing an article on cutting edge viewing technology.

1: Not everyone is as financially well off as you, some people cannot afford said things. Take a dose of humility.

2: Yeah, some people have to choose between a new piece of pc hardware and food. Count yourself lucky.

3: People who are worried about eating vs buying pc hardware shouldn't be here. I do not worry about cars that cost as much as my house.

4: ignorance

5: reply to ignorance

6: sympathizer of ignorance.

7: reply teaching reply context

Is this the start of 8GB of ram being the bare minimum? Currently waiting for a GTX 980ti which will handle this but until there is decent enough games/software for it I won't bother.

@lonesamurai1: Sony had Morpheus demos running on the PS4 last year. Anything can run at a high resolution and high framerate so long as the graphics are dumbed down enough. And that's exactly what the demos had. I don't mind artsy surreal graphics in my VR, actually..
