Oculus Rift Consumer Model to Launch Early 2016

Pre-orders will be taken later this year.

Oculus VR has announced a release window for the consumer version of its flagship virtual reality hardware, the Oculus Rift. The company revealed today that the Oculus Rift will ship to consumers in the first quarter of 2016, with pre-orders to be taken "later this year."

Sony's PlayStation 4 headset, Project Morpheus, will launch to consumers in the first half of 2016.

The consumer model of the Oculus Rift builds upon the hardware of the Crescent Bay prototype that was revealed in September last year. The prototype included integrated audio and 360 motion tracking that the Rift will feature, in addition to support for both seated and standing experiences. More details on the hardware, software, input, and games for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift will be revealed in the next few weeks.

In November last year Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe said that a consumer model of the Oculus Rift was "months, not years" away from being released. No details on pricing were revealed, but you can expect the Rift to set you back around $200-400 according to comments previously made by Oculus VR. Whatever the final price ends up being, Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey said the company was aiming for it to be "as cheap as possible."

The latest Oculus Rift development kit, called the DK2, is currently available to order for $350. The consumer model will allegedly offer what Oculus VR calls a "significant increase" in resolution over the Crescent Bay model, and the refresh rate will rise from 75Hz to 90Hz "or higher."

The most relevant use for the rift currently are for simulators (motorsports, space combat, aviation etc.) FPS and other first-person games that are "on-foot" would feel strange without the treadmill contraption, which likely costs a fortune and is not fully developed.

A Logitech G27 racing setup with a racing-style bucket seat and the Rift is the best racing sim setup I can think of. Swap the G27 wheel for a joystick and some flat controls and you have a space sim setup. All this would cost up to 1000 bucks though so it isn't cheap.

as long ass there are no games that use it in an interesting way, it might still be too expensive for a 10 minute amusement gadget.

.I'm excited to try it out. I've heard a lot of valid arguments for why VR isn't really ready yet, but I'm really hoping this is a success. Though idk how I feel about the integrated audio. The headset looks cheap like it might not have great audio quality or be able to block outside noises. I'd prefer to be able to use my own headphones for audio.

@jdkillustration: It looks cheap, but according to an interview I saw the reason they include it is that most gaming headsets are not good enough. Sound is very important for the VR experience and if people use their own crappy headsets they may get an unfair negative first impression.

@Sushiglutton@jdkillustration: To add to that palmer luckey is a big audiophile and has a pretty good idea of what good audio sounds like.

@jdkillustration: I think it would be best, for ANY of the VR head units coming out, that they leave out integrated audio altogether. It would cheapen the price, and consumers can use whatever headsets/earbuds they want. Just put in a decent headphone jack on the thing, and be done with it.

tbh i don't see this to be very popular because of its "single task" nature and price.

Most of the gamers multitask (playing a game, while open for other types of inter/action, such as browsing, using a phone, or some other kind of action that needs a "relatively" quick response)
and as such there is not much time during the day when you can actually dedicate yourself for such enjoyment.

Don't get me wrong, i still think this is an awesome piece of tech that most gamers will enjoy when they have the luxury of isolating themselves from the world, as the immersion feeling is epic.

Its just a matter of time before this issue is solved (maybe not this iteration of the product) and before this becomes a lighter/slimmer with some augmented reality options (like simple glasses that have an option to isolate yourself from the outside world and dedicate yourself to it for full immersion).

IMHO until then, this is a luxury product that requires luxury of time to be fully appreciated, and as such i don't see it as very popular (usage wise), as a large number of people will buy it, but will not have the time to use it and a large % of people will not buy it for the same reason.

@noirtenshin: "Most of the gamers multitask"

Unless you have some statistical data to back that up, the point is moot. Even if that were true, then I think those "gamers" should reconsider gaming. It seems more of a habit or addiction, rather than actual enjoyment of a game that they're after. The exception, of course, are the grindfests like MMOs, where multitasking is inevitable.

"and before this becomes a lighter/slimmer with some augmented reality options"

For the love of... no, keep your augmented gimmicks were they belong - hololens. This is a VR headset and that it should remain. If you want AR, get AR headset.

"this is a luxury product that requires luxury of time to be fully appreciated"

Given how millions of people spend $100 on a single game (e.g. cod+season pass), it's not that luxurious of a product. As for time, well, if you can't spend 30minutes to enjoy a game, then maybe you should move on to mobile games - they're specifically designed for people who only have 5 minutes to spare.

@______@noirtenshin:

well for the multitask, i have to say: "try playing games while your kids are not sleeping"

statistically speaking, most gamers are around 30, have jobs (need to wake up early - no staying late) or they don't live alone.

30 minutes of gaming usually isn't enough for a quality game session

For the AR option, i meant that it would make the product more popular (meaning its not only AR, that it has to be a VR as a base, but could be used as an outdoor device with AR features) not to be converted into AR only.

As for the luxury, it is equivalent to a console price (maybe even less) and it does not play games on its own, it just plays them better, if you add the price of a PC that can play it the way it should, it really becomes a luxury product (300-400$ + price of a good PC - around 1000-1300$) when compared to a standard PC (600-800$).

Again, am saying why i think it will be hard for this product to become extra popular (it will be popular for sure, just not as much as it would be if it had more ways to be used maybe for a lesser price).

@noirtenshin@______: ......the price of a PC has nothing to do with itself being a luxury product or not, you god damn cretin. Oh, what, you also need an apartment or a house to have a place to play with your Oculus! And if you live anywhere above a certain point on Earth, then you need some clothes, or you'll freeze to death!

Also, you need a car, or a bus ticket, to go buy the Oculus! And you need to use the shower to wash yourself before you go out to go get the Oculus! And then you probably need scissors to open the box the Oculus is in!

No, people who buy an Oculus already have a PC, already use it for numerous other tasks and a lot of those tasks being necessary (all arguments you could make for why an apartment or house can't be counted under how luxurious the Oculus is). If the Oculus turns out to be only 200, it wouldn't be a luxurious item. It's a way to play games that blows most people's minds (especially the first time they try it) and it's, like, 60 bucks more than some Special Edition video games that have, what, some figurines or whatever in them?

Also, tough titty, you have kids. You can't do anything without their involvement while being focused, the world is not gonna cater itself to you and your lack of time, and what kind of time restraints your kids put you into are wholly irrelevant to everyone but you. There is a very big demographic who have the time for Oculus (and hey, buy it an use it for some time and it'll be pretty much plug and play, so...you don't even need almost any time for it, you can even play a few minutes at a time), and who have enough money to buy it.

As an example, among my friends, I am the only one I know of who has two monitors (soon gonna get three) and I DO like to multi-task, but all my friends (especially those who game on PC) have one monitor; not really an ideal environment for this brain-dead zombies drunk on multitasking dystopia you've outlined here that will apparently, I dunno, what was the point of your post? That you don't like the Oculus because it cuts into your oh so precious time, or that it will fail overall?

Either way, one's irrelevant, the other can't be predicted, but you're probably gonna be wrong on.

@Micropixel: Making your decision before you even got the chance to try a final product on an actual game. It's your money to waste, I guess.

@______: The steam VR headset (HTC vive) is way ahead of others. I'm a developer and that is my opinion as such, and many others would agree. The rift needs to change quite a bit if it wants to get ahead.

@Seezecks@Kinguard73: We've been hearing that since the 80s. Each times it comes in big and then simmers after a few years. The technology is improving, but isn't there yet. Things like the Rift are needed to drive the tech forward for the next generation to capitalize on and improve until we do reach that point.
