Oblivion nabs Spike TV top honors

Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize.

LOS ANGELES--Another Spike TV Video Game Awards show, another star-studded event that might not have appealed to hardcore fans of the subject it's supposed to celebrate. However, in its fourth try, the "First Network for Men" did pull off one of its best awards shows, in terms of both production and worthy nominees.

Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.

The fourth annual Spike TV Video Game Awards were held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles Friday night, with veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson returning for the second consecutive year as the show's host.

The broadcast of Friday's event will be aired on the self-proclaimed "First Network for Men" next Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature musical performances from Tenacious D and AFI. But GameSpot was in attendance this eve, with the results of the judges' voting below.

Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.
Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.

The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game, though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year.

As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

Oblivion also walked home with Most Addictive Game (voted on by the public), Best Performance by a Human (Male) for Patrick Stewart, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score. Gears of War took home four awards total, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best Multiplayer Game, and Best Studio for its developers, Epic Games.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.

The Critics' Choice Award, the only category open for games released after November 7 (games scheduled for release before the end of the year were eligible for the Critics' Choice Award), went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. By its requirements, the category was also the only chance for Wii or PlayStation 3 games to take home an award.

Tenacious D kicked off the ceremonies with the band's usual heavy-metal parody rock stylings, and Jackson continued the action with a few sketches before taking the stage in person. Helping Jackson out was Seth MacFarlane, bantering with the Snakes on a Plane star as the voice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Presumably, Stewie will be animated in for the Wednesday broadcast.

There were some world-exclusive premieres, including footage of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling, and the opening cinematic from The Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. WOW got the deluxe treatment, with a congregation of robed, lip-synching figures taking the stage while the trailer showed above them, occasionally accompanied by some light pyrotechnics.

Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.

Beyond that, most of the presenters were in good spirits as they delivered their hit-and-miss lines before an oft-indifferent crowd. Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only ad-lib of the night.

The highlight of the evening came when comedienne Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.

Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

Most addictive game? The Elite Beat Agents would like to have a word with you. As much as I love rpgs, I never considered them addictive. And I would never imagine how any game could beat Okami for best graphics, even though Gears of War had great photorealistic graphics, I don't think they're half as beautiful. Although, I guess graphics and artwork are a completely different thing. One more comment... how did Brain Age and Tetris get on the list for best handheld game? XD

Not a big fan on RPG;s dominating the face of mdern gaming. THough beautifully looking, they are too slow. Shooters on the other hand are very detailed but lack the "control" feeling from 3rd person games where obstacles, traps, and other elements can be added to improve the gaming experience.

It was nice to see that the awards weren't fixed this year and the show turned out better then the commercial it was last year.

I gotta agree with some of you guys. The pop people really need to stay away from anything that has the word "game" in it, but far as Oblivion and Gears of War go, I have to agree with them. Both are awesome games in their own respects. Gears of War got me addicted (which was a total shocker to me when I realized I had been playing the game for 11 hours straight, never happened before in all my years of playing video games. That Lancer RULES!!!). Oblivion's got the lead for me, though. It gets you more involved with the character, which is the ultimate seller. Just imagine every game that you love, and it doesn't matter what platform it is, or what game it is: You love the main character(s) in it. That's the way it is, and that's the way it's always gonna be. GoW has awesome gameplay that makes you want more, but that can only last for so long if you don't have a good enough character you can cling to loyally. (All you Halo games out there know what I'm talking about). ALL HAIL MASTER CHEIF!!!

I wish the gen pop would stop equating the video gaming population to the hip-hop crowd. I mean video gamers are diverse ... sure some are hip-hoppers, some are geeks (yours truly), some are sports fans , etc...

Correct vinner. Oblivion is the game Ive spent most time with this year. Strange that Final Fantasy XII wasnt nominated for best game tho. Its excellent. Gears of War is good but overrated. I got bored with it within a week. There is no replay value whatsoever.

Game, game, and game. That is all I say about this... if you do entertainment, do that. Don't mess with a world that doesn't belong to you. Leave it to real gamers. Oblivion is like how old now... and it got GOTY? The expansion pack itself got that? WTF? Well I have to say these awards mean nothing but whatever, war.(yes war)

Oblivion deserved to win, but on the other hand so did Gears of War. All of the games and the consoles that were picked were all good too. Next year the console wars will be on once more for the next gen gaming systems.

Wow... i completely avoided watching the awards show this year thinking that it was going to be a huge waste of time... no worries... they'll probably show it a hundred times in replays... Gears of war... LOST??? Whatever... hopefully they build upon the success they made this year and video gaming catches more attention... not that they need it... Next year.. with the next-gen consoles... it shud be crazy

I'm glad Oblivion won GOTY. It has more "meat" to it than Gears. I love shooters I play them all, but after all it was all said an done I was disappointed in Gears. Shallow play mechanics and repetitive game play. I haven't played it online yet, but the single player falls flat. I played for 5hrs on release date and haven't touched it since. Why do you ask did I play it for that long if I was disappointed? I was hoping it would get better than it was. Maybe it's because I need compelling characters and an awesome story...Gears had none of these. It could have but nope lets spend time and money on the looks of the game. I'll pick it up again soon and maybe I'll change my mind or maybe I won't. Both are great games but the better man won.

This is a good attempt at making gaming more mainstream. One problem, they are not in touch with gamers. They have no clue how diverse a community we are. All they know is what thier BS public relations people tell them. A few ideas on how they could improve this for next year. 1. Get Gamespot and other well respected gaming sites involved in selection and voting. 2. Dont give gamers people they dont want to see, SLJ is cool, but really, what does he have to do with gaming??? I would much rather see Valves pres up there. 3. Dont try so dayum hard! Okay, movies have the academy awards. The academy is made up of film critics, actors, directors, producers, etc. People INVOLVED with the industry. They vote on the nominees. As well as the awards. I dont like the idea of anyone other than the users of said materiel to vote on its impact, so in my plan, the "game academy" would choose the nominees, the users (US) would vote on it. Second, Get people involved in games as the people who present awards. Actors that actually work in games, well known game testers, hell, even pro gamers like u know who. Lastly, Spike, dont try so hard. There is beauty in simplicity and horror in things that are too complex. Stick to the old addage. KISS. Just my $00.05 you can take it or leave it, but rest assured, I will not be tuning in or paying any attention to the spike awards until its is a true representative of the gaming community. And last.....just wth is the "gaming lifestyle"??????? WW

this award show on a production level was a piece of unicorn **** it looked like someone that had no idea about games whar so ever decides to make the show off of the general perception of gamers by the gen pop. this is the first one that i watched and from the opening sequence i thought something was up....i will watch again to see if they do it any justice and if they dont, this will end up being an easily overlooked and deservedly so award show for me, like the latin grammies..... most bs goes to family guy winning any awards and mka beat doa4, gtfoh..... oblivion deserved it, geow should of gotten most addictive because anyone who has played oblivion knows they have to be commited to damn near 200+ hrs from the jump...with GeOW the story wasnt all there but i can tell u that ive beaten the game 7x now, taking different strategies thru different parts with DIFFERENT people...how many 360 games are there that having xbl actually hurt it? now consider the inverse....when i think if addiction i think of it as a group activity...but thats my opinion...

What a Joke of all the fighting games MK A beats Tekken and DOA4 I know that onething is that it was a shock to many people and of all game to win,I mean the game itself does not have any ends which makes It WWWAAAKKK WAK anyways the reason I feel tekken and Doa were rip off is that Mka is Too UNREALLY ,THE FIGHTING DOESNT FLOW (IT FAST BUT IT FEELS LIKE DOING THE ROBOT DANCE). and its a game many people dont play compared to tekken it does not come close in terms of popularity (I know this geting carried away but if i ask a chick if they know MKA they wouldnt have a clue what your talking about but with tekken they would know cause there is no arcade centre with out at lest a tekken comepared to mka )

It shouldn't be THAT big of a surprise. Gears of War hasn't been out all that long, especially considering the prep time that goes into the VGA. GoW is actually lucky to have made the bill. Despite some clunky gameplay and numerous glitches, Oblivion is as beautiful as it is huge. It's had ample time to prove itself.

Spike needs to get gamers to place what games should be in the catergories or something and then let us vote on them. cause spike is good at putting CSI on for 4 hours straight and causing a mass suicide rate from it. GoW is a much better game then Oblivion, why you ask?? cause its not a game you would put down to take a break from. GoW gets turned off cause you have to eat, sleep, or go to work. Oblivion gets put down cause they made a game about the size of the earth and made it single player. Don't get me wrong its a GREAT game but let me check my drawer and see whats collecting dust right now...... Oblivion, Dead Rising, Saints Row, GRAW..... Etc.... I haven't even seen Oblivion push 1 mill for sales, 6 weeks and GoW sold 2 mill!!!!! thats insane for games this era with all the choices you have and even pushed Xbox Live sales 50% of where they were at. GotY should go to the game that is getting the most amount of people to sit down and play it. Oblivion has been out longer so might have some hours to GoW, but for what its done in less then 2 months, it should be a gimme for what its brought to gamers and to the next-gen in gaming.

This show is an abomination. The first picture explains it all. FIFTY CENT? WTF DOES HE HAVE TO DO WITH GAMES?? NOTHING. GET THAT WANNA BE OUT OF HERE. I mean really, this whole show is an insulting joke. It's pop culture trash, and most videogamers are counter-culture (the real ones, not the kid who bought a PS3 just to play madden). This mass-conglomerated hip hop media thing has to die. NOW. While I love Oblivion, an award from Spike doesn't really count for anything. Hopefully some orginization that actually KNOWS something about games will put together a real award show someday that has some credibility.

Well, I knew it was going to be between GoW and Oblivion, but the victor was still unclear in my mind. I do support the choice of Oblivion though because GoW may be one of the most awesome games I've ever had the privilege to play, Oblivion took immersion in games to the next level... and then a few more levels after that. Regardless, both titles make me proud to own a 360 (yet sad that it broke, but hey, it's over a year old now [that's right, i got mine of launch day]).

Im just glad oblivion got what it deserved, they spent way too much work on it for it NOT to win, (although theres still plenty of bugs to be fixed...)

Stop whinning GoW fans. You won 4 awards. This has been a good year for 360. Oblivion deserved the win. It was an immersive game that allowed for many hours of game play. Gears suffered from an under developed, short single player mode. Not everyone wants to spend every waking moment online with a bunch of drolling ADD patients. I think both games are great but Oblivion offered more. Now, I can't wait till next years awards. If the upcoming games (FFXIII, MGS, H3, ME, AC, AW, etc.) even live up to half of the hype then it will be a great year.

wot!!! FFxII, Okami and KH2 ddn't get any award?!! Mmmm anyway Spike TV(VGA) is just a crappy show. look at the winners only 4 deserves the award. The gaming industry hasn't come up w/ a highly reputable gaming awards show...The hardcore gamers doesn't need these crappy V-game awards show to tell us who really deserves to be commended..

dtrain82 - "im getting pretty sick of hearing ppl say that theres nothing like GOW, come on ppl. how about you go to your basement, brush your ps2 off and turn on some KILLSWITCH. they are the same game " OK, that was pathetic. If you had actually taken the time to play GeOW (which you obviously haven't), you probably wouldn't of said what you just did. First off, Killswitch shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as GeOW. It was a mediocre title at best that failed to implement true cover tactics. Gears of War is a masterpiece of a shooter that is superb in every category and is one of the most intense and exciting games in years, which you would know if you had played it. It takes shooters to the next level. Anyways, as far as the GOTY awards go, I think Oblivion deserved the prize. Even though GeOW is a stellar game, Oblivion is simply a timeless classic that will go down as one of the greatest RPG's of all-time. After logging in 200+ hours, I can confidently make that statement. Honestly, I don't think I have ever been so immersed in a game experience like I was while playing Oblivion. FFXII may be a great RPG too 'Kanoblade', but it doesn't compete on the level of Oblivion and certainly doesn't do enough new things for the franchise to make it GOTY; it should've at least been a canidate, though. I agree that this system needs to be revised.

You know, i usually don't write anything either dtrain82, but you've clearly haven't played GOW. Having played both, i can say they are very different, GOW definetly being the better game of the 2. Also, they always screw up the rpg category, first they choose KOTOR2 over Jade Empire and now they've chosen Oblivion over FFXII. I've played 190 hours of oblivion and loved every moment, but it's no where near as good as FFXII. These awards would be legitimate if they were judged from all of the top publication sites, then it would truly be awesome. Finally, if you're going to have Team Sports Games Awards, and the nominated games are all from the same publisher, why don't you just make it sports company or something similar, EA already sucks so stop giving them praise.

When this show first came out , I thought finally this industry will get the attention and praise it deserves. Then I saw the show...I could not watch it for more than 10 minutes. It's like watching the teen choice awards, except the format is video games. When will this be taken seriously? Who decides what titles are elgible for a catergory? who decides the winners? It should be people in the industry and prominant outside sources(ie.Gamespot, etc) It seems to me this whole show is very questionable in its autenticity and accuracy. (and come-on, Samuel L. Jackson? you really think he plays video games?.even the choice of the host is B.S.) The horror awards were much better suited for this format.

Someone should tell CliffyB that his little "pop and shoot" isn't all that new and revolutionary. Don't believe me? Check out a little dustbin gem called Kill Switch. It's short and the story is pretty weak and almost non-existent, but Namco did the 3rd person duck and cover shooter way before GoW did. Don't get me wrong, GoW is a great game. It's beautiful to look at and it truly is a great game and deserves all of the praise it's getting. But I'm really getting sick of people saying the "pop and shoot" game mechanic is so ground-breaking and original.

Most all games are the same as past games, just look different, play a bit different, things mixed up. But in General, Nothing is really completely NEW these days. There are a few Exceptions. Any new game out today is based on a old game in one way or another. NOTHING is truly new anymore. I'd like to play Oblivion, but I don't even have time to play Gears like I want to. They both are great games, and either one winning is just fine. They are both after all 360 games anyway.

I would like to formally apologize for my previous post's bypassing of GameSpot's censorship coding. While I wasn't aware my own selection of asterick's was insufficient, ignorance is no excuse for breaking the rules. What follows is my previous post, with a better choice of phrase in lieu of the offending one: "Get rid of the industry-inappropriate celebrities, the hip-hop, and categories belonging to film award shows, and maybe. . .I still won't watch it. "Only the cancellation of Spike TV will end this. . .The network's as big an insult to men as Lifetime is to women. In fact, all niche networks need to understanding something: the world's not so cut and dry, no matter what specific demographic to which they're catering. I can accept an over-generalization of groups of people from comedians; they're trying to make people laugh, after all. But I cannot accept this from networks, who're trying to tell me what I should like because 8 out of 10 saps polled do."
