Obama Could Produce New Shows For Netflix

Thanks, Obama.

Netflix and former President Barack Obama are potentially going to work together on new TV shows. The New York Times reports today that Obama is in "advanced negotiations" with Netflix to create a "series of high-profile shows." NYT's report is based on unspecified sources.

As part of the deal, Netflix would pay Obama and his wife, Michelle, an unspecified fee for new TV shows. According to the report, Obama's shows will focus on "inspirational stories" instead of responding to President Trump or conservative policy.

"President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire," Obama's former senior adviser Eric Schultz told NYT. "As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories."

Specifics about Obama's Netflix shows are under wraps for now, but NYT says one potential idea is for a program where Obama moderates discussions about things like health care, immigration, foreign policy, and climate change. Michelle Obama, meanwhile, could star in a show where she talks about things like nutrition and health, which she worked to promote while at the White House. Additionally, the Obamas might be behind new Netflix documentaries or even fictional shows that line up with their "beliefs and values."

Apple and Amazon have also reportedly been interested in making shows with the Obamas, according to the report.

Obama has a history with Netflix. He recently appeared in the first episode of David Letterman's new Netflix show, My Guest Needs No Introduction.

Netflix plans to have around 700 original TV shows by the end of 2018; the company plans on spending around $8 billion on content in 2018. Obama's new show(s) could be among them.

I wonder if they will tackle topics like how he doubled our national debt/crashed our economy, Obamacare, or instilled racial division? Doubt it.

@edwardnygma: Edward, you have no grip on reality. The Great Recession had begun even before Obama took office. McCain made a big show during the campaign of pausing it and returning to WDC to address the banking crisis.

But I don't expect any ODS sufferer, conservative, or alt right white supremacist to even admit there are such things as facts, much less be guided at all by them. Look where they get their news--Faux News, a "news" outlet that is so right wing conservative biased that studies have shown that people who watch no news at all are more informed than its viewers.

@trex24:

I will shut you up with one question:

What did Obama do to help the poor and middle-class attain wealth and opportunity? Name 5 things.

He had 8 years to do this. Name them or STFU

@trex24: It's not that Fox News is conservative. It's just that they aren't as blatantly liberal democrat as all of the others.

@trex24: Obama had EIGHT years to help our economy, create jobs, advance our system, etc. EIGHT years and he did nothing but hurt our country. You might not like facts like that he doubled our national debt or created Obamacare but that doesn’t stop them from being facts no matter how many ignorant, racist statements you make. Time to go back to your safe space liberal.

@edwardnygma: From Russia with love...you should probably do some research before regurgitating what Fox and your Russian friends tell you to say.

@chakan2: Well, in his defense the national debt did double under Obama, the economy slugged along 8 years, Obamacare was a complete failure, and the country is more racially divided than it has been in my lifetime. As for Russia:

“There is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow that you could even — you could even rig America’s elections, in part, because they are so decentralized and the numbers of votes involved,” Obama said during a press conference at the White House in October 2016. “There is no evidence that that has happened in the past or that there are instances in which that will happen this time. And so I’d invite Mr. Trump to stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes.” -Obama

@Defender1978: True, but it was rigged nonetheless, keywords, republicans + gerrymandering = you get the idea if you do some research. Rep made sure that Dem's wouldn't win in any scenario.

Isn't it interesting reading lines like "President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire"? Well, at least he's not trying to hide it. Lulling the people in and telling them what they want to hear is the job of a president, not doing what needs to be done to make progress.

No idea why people are complaining about Trump now when he's doing the exact same thing. Who cares about actions anyway? Just tell people what they want to hear and they'll be satisfied.

@Atzenkiller: You not knowing why people complain about Trump means you must live under a rock somewhere, or are willfully ignorant.

The shows will most likely be filled with extreme gore, drug use, nonstop John Woo style shoot outs and enough cussing to make a drunken sailor happy

A lot of a show’s appeal comes from its newness, but their current strategy seems to be to release everything at once and leave you to sort through it for the next few years. Quality-over-quantity seems like it would be a better approach here as they run the risk of the name Netflix becoming more and more synonymous with crap.
