Obama calls for game violence research

[UPDATE] US President directs Centers for Disease Control to conduct further studies on relationship between virtual violence and real-world violence; the ESA responds.

President Barack Obama today ordered more research be done to investigate the relationship between video games and real-world violence. As part of a $500 million, 23-point plan, Obama directed the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other research agencies to conduct further research into the matter in the wake of December's deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

No Caption Provided

The Obama administration is calling on Congress to allocate $10 million for the CDC to conduct its research. Vice President Joe Biden met with gaming leaders--including Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello and Entertainment Software Association president Michael Gallagher--last week to discuss gun violence.

Obama's plan to conduct more research into game violence is not the only such ongoing initiative. West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller's dead-but-not-defeated proposition would task the National Academy of Sciences to study the effects of violent video games and other programs on children. Rockefeller plans to re-introduce the bill to Congress this month.

"Most gun owners are responsible and law-abiding, and they use their guns safely," reads a statement from the White House. "The President strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. But to better protect our children and our communities from tragic mass shootings like those in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, and Tucson, there are four common-sense steps we can take right now."

In addition to tasking the CDC with conducting more research on video game violence, Obama's plan includes closing background check loopholes, banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, making schools safer, and increasing access to mental health services.

"While no law or set of laws will end gun violence, it is clear that the American people want action," the statement continues. "If even one child’s life can be saved, then we need to act. Now is the time to do the right thing for our children, our communities, and the country we love."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, the Entertainment Software Association issued a statement on the news to Joystiq. It states that scientific research has proven entertainment does not cause real-world violent behavior and notes the organization will continue to work with Obama and Congress to find solutions.

"ESA appreciates President Obama's and Vice President Biden's leadership and the thoughtful, comprehensive process of the White House Gun Violence Commission. We concur with President Obama's call today for all Americans to do their part, and agree with the report's conclusion that the entertainment and video game industries have a responsibility to give parents tools and choices about the movies and programs their children watch and the games their children play.

"The same entertainment is enjoyed across all cultures and nations, but tragic levels of gun violence remain unique to our country. Scientific research and international and domestic crime data all point toward the same conclusion: entertainment does not cause violent behavior in the real world.

"We will embrace a constructive role in the important national dialogue around gun violence in the United States, and continue to collaborate with the Administration and Congress as they examine the facts that inform meaningful solutions."

You gun nuts think that having an automatic rifle will protect you from the US military. If civil war did break out how will your rifle protect you from an airstrike. Get informed, criminals in first world countries where guns are banned are far less likely to have guns than where they are not.

@TheLobotimizer That's retarded. The U.S. would never fight a war on its own soil the way it fights on other nation's soil. It can't just "airstrike" its own infastructure. The military is too big for its own pants for that shit. They need our nations resources AND workers/slaves, not to mention industrial infastructure. Oh, and don't be ignorant then tell us to get informed. Most first world countries are run by criminals and they have ALL the guns they need.

@TheLobotimizer You seriously think the us military people would shoot at their own citizens they swore to protect??? Get your head out of your ass lol The military would be first people to go against the government And btw automatic weapons are banned already jackass. And also, Countries where firearms are almost completely banned have the worst crime rate since criminals arent afraid of civilians.

@elmarko98@1234die@TheLobotimizer

You think the deaths of 3 people are better than 1500 rapes/assaults?

Before you answer consider the fact that 13% of rape victims attempt (not all succeed) to commit suicide.

I'll take the three deaths and let my wife keep her gun

@1234die @TheLobotimizer Funny how ignorant comments get upvoted stats on gun violence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence

Funny how the US has 700% more murders involving guns than the UK where guns are banned.

@TheLobotimizer Do your research.

The UK averages 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens a year. The US 466 violent crimes per 100,000. The murder rate in the UK is 1.2 per 100,000. In the US it is 4.8 per 100,000 (which includes the criminals that guns are used against.)

Each year in the US approximately 2.5 million crimes are stopped by people with fire arms. Compared to 13,800 murders (not just gun murders.)

You will never take the guns from the criminals even if we ignored that thing called the constitution (something Our Dear Leader in the White House is very fond of.) Gun bans would only hurt law abiding citizens.

Fact: Crime goes down in every state that puts conceal carry laws in place.

I type this at work with my Sig against my thigh. The same one used at Sandy Hook and yet somehow it has never killed anyone. Maybe if that kids mother had stored her guns properly or hadn't felt the need to pump psychotropic drugs (with listed side effects of violent tendencies and suicidal thought) into his system day after day, month after month, and year after year she, the teachers, and the children would still be alive.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

@Double_Wide @TheLobotimizer @thenephariouson I concur crime has been a larger part of american culture than most others(ie: ganster shows and a respect from teenagers for criminals). Gun control will not solve this problem outright. But I would really like a responce from someone on why they need an assault rifle.

"So with what are we supossed to protect ourselves then?"

Wow, we're in the 21st century, anyone would think that the US still resides in the Wild West Era.

...and if Guns are meant to provide safety , then the US should be the safest place on earth.

Yeah you definately never went to business school and are naive about how the drug trade works. Guns will be the new heorine...I promise you that. All the illegal arms dealers and smugglers are all rubbing their hands together and cheering for the government right now because they know they're about to seriously get paid

Ever heard of supply and demand? In case you haven't...when their is shortage (or in this case ban) of something, the demand increases. Therefore people will be willing to pay serious money for these weapons...just like some pay serious money for drugs.

Drugs are smuggled in from other countries, what's your point?

@Double_Wide @TheLobotimizer @tomservo51 @canuckbiker @1234die Guns unlike drugs are expensive regardless of availability. Guns need to be smuggled in from other countries increasing cost as producing them is nearly impossible to hide. An increase of price coupled with extra charges would decrease overall gun numbers.

@1234die @TheLobotimizer @tomservo51 @canuckbiker In first world countries laws are upheld. Drug cartels rule parts of Africa. This means that regardless of if guns are banned in the country or not the warlords have the power.

Conduct the study and when it finds no link, it'll just be ignored anyway. "These are not the biased results that we're looking for."

How many more studies will it take before folks move onto the next scape goat?

If videogames simulate and cause real life murders, then I suppose by that logic pork causes cannibalism. People who have eaten both human and pig meat compare the two, not to mention pigs are the animals with flesh closest to us. I could argue that it's a simulation of human flesh and gives people the acquired taste for it...And I bet if we looked at the diet of all the cannibals who have lived, we would see they ate pork.

It's a silly theory either way.

The problem with these studies is that, if you want to find a correlation between two things you can. You could find a correlation between pirates sailing the seven seas and lower temperatures. So, it all depends on the motive of the researcher.

Fine, do as much research as you want, we have nothing to fear as there simply is no link. The problem lies in that in a society where guns are as common as baseball bats incidents that would normally end with simple injury are often fatal.

@thenephariouson"Japan hasn't been so lucky with Grand Theft Auto releases. Either the games come years later, heavily censored or both. Well, this time is different. Today, Capcom announced it is bringing a localized version of the multi-platform title Grand Theft IV to The Land of the Rising Sun sometime this year. Though, we're pretty sure CERO (Japan's ESRB) will censor it pretty heavily. Japan doesn't take kindly to random human killing!" obviuosly this is old but it makes my point.

They don't play the same content there that we do.

A lot of people are accusing guns for a whole load of violence, but lets face it guns have become a part of American society, you take those away and people would be in an uproar, politicians dare not saying anything against guns because they would have almost no votes (And thats from an English persons view)

Lower the defense budget, take 2nd amendment rights, then prevent Americans from defending themselves. It has nothing to do with Sandy Cook. Games train us to work together and defend ourselves, specifically games like Call of Duty.

This whole thing is just a complete farce, violent games are meant for adults hence the ratings system just as in all forms of media. There has already been enough research but it didn't reach the conclusion they wanted so they'll continue their research until they find something to validate their position on violent games and proceed to do whatever they have already decided to do.

"The same entertainment is enjoyed across all cultures and nations, but tragic levels of gun violence remain unique to our country."

I agree with you if I lived in America, but in England the odds of a burglar having a gun, where im from are next to none, so the playing field is lvl, infact we have never been burgled in the 25 years iv lived in my current house.
