Nvidia Teases Plans To "Redefine The Future Of Gaming"

"Very special event" to be held March 3 in San Francisco as part of the 2015 Game Developers Conference.

Chip company Nvidia has sent invitations to press for an event called "Made to Game," which will be held March 3 as part of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

During the hour-long presentation, Nvidia's president and chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang will make what sounds like a major announcement.

"More than 5 years in the making, what I want to share with you will redefine the future of gaming," reads a line from Huang's invitation to media.

He also referred to the presentation as a "very special event." No further details were made available, but GameSpot will be on-hand during the event to bring you all the news.

In addition to whatever Nvidia has up its sleeve, Valve plans to show off its line of Steam Machines--and maybe the final iteration of the Steam Controller--during GDC. On top of that, GDC will also bring us a first look at Assassin's Creed eye-tracking functionality.

GDC runs March 2-6 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

What are you hoping to hear or see at from Nvidia? Let us know in the comments below!

Nvidia makes decent GPUs, and I enjoy my GTX 980. However, Nvidia is not talented enough to redefine gaming. It is hard even for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.

Besides, to redefine the future of gaming is not guaranteed to be a good thing. Smartphones and tablets have done it.

<< LINK REMOVED >>I'm not sure how you've arrived at that conclusion. Not talented enough?

Nvidia likely has some of the most brilliant computer scientists working for them. They are constantly inventing new rendering technologies that other companies then mimic. They don't just ramp up their hardware and sell a newer, shinier model every year, they invent technologies.

MS, Ninty and Sony don't invent anything except proprietary software. They just assemble components made by other companies into a consumer friendly package.

I think if anyone could push gaming into a new era with some amazing new tech, it would be Nvidia.

Edit: ... when they aren't screwing over customers with gimped cards, then releasing a loaded one 6 months later. But that's their business-asshole side of things. Not their "talented" people.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nvidia are far more technically advanced than MS, Sony and Nintendo. They design and build cutting edge hardware.

Sony, MS and Nintendo do not define anything in the games industry, they hold it back to make profit from low end hardware.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I was just thinking something similar as I was reading the article, that Nvidia does some serious tech work that's probably a lot more advanced. However I also have to say that faster and more powerful tech doesn't necessarily mean as much to gaming as other things, like say some crazy new interface idea that takes off.

So I guess I kinda agree with both of you.

monopolize away Nvidia, I was forced to buy your cards now anyway, just make sure Ubisoft can actually optimize the technology for PC, rather than giving consoles (that use AMD chips) a more stable version...

<< LINK REMOVED >> For some reason I have owned every single generation from ATI and Nvidia.. There was always something I like about each own IQ. With Nvidia I always have to dig into Inspector to get the amazing IQ I'm looking for.. I don't focus on what I get out of the box "optimized graphics" I want to bring my graphics card to it's knees.. that's why I shell out that cash. These last 2 generations from Nvidia haven't even came close to the performance I get with 7970vs gtx 680 and the 780ti vs 290x and I'm talking about IQ to it's max and beyond using radeon pro and inspector. Nivida's Actual specs shows it's weakness. N e ways everyone has forgotten about this.. << LINK REMOVED >> Nvidia games works does nothing for us consumers. monopolize away Nvidia

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ya, I love Nvidia's GPUs, but I sort of cringe everytime I see: "The Way It's Meant to be Played" on a launch screen. It usually means the games going to run like crap, even though my GPU cost as much as my PS4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have the Shield Tablet and the Shield handheld. The tablet is quite the disappointment... it really doesn't matter if it has "desktop" level graphics if its not fun to hold and play games on. Speaking of which there are hardly any games that use that "advanced" technology. The tablet is pretty big disappointment, like most Android tablets are. Additionally they compound the issue by failing to keep the handheld up to date and it looks like they've already bailed on ti.

Thanks for the information! :)

I realize that the power isn't necessary for some time, I just thought it would be good for future-proofing the tablet for mobile games while allowing it to run PC games since a Windows tablet is just a portable PC.

Redefine the future of gaming? Where have I heard that before? Oh right, it's what every company says when they want to build a hype train for something that won't be anywhere near as revolutionary as they claim. Sadly, everybody hops aboard like sheep.

Well, I would expect this to be related to glNext (also being unveiled at GDC). There's gotta be hardware that complements the API and that would be NVIDIAs turf.

Just how much redefining can the gaming hobby endure? Every year I see at least 3 or 4 companies claiming to redefine gamine through a particular game or hardware. I'm still waiting for one to deliver. Not holding my breath on yet another one.

It says "More than 5 years in the making". If it's a card it has to be a triple gpu, otherwise it could be some new 3d tech.

I do not think it is a new line of video cards because they not too long ago released the 900 line and to release a new line now may undercut the 900 series.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Once 4K gaming is actually viable (the next generations of cards) you will see the situation change. What good is it to be better at something but still not actually good, and then worse in the situations that actually matter? The fact that AMD is in that position illustrates my point about their engineering. NVIDIA's cards are better optimized.

Nvidia have done alot with optimising the CPU whereas AMD havnt given the drivers much attention instead focusing more on mantle thats why nvidia gets better performance in DX11. There Omega drivers fixed a ton of stuff but even still i think theyll just focus more on DX12 implementation going forward

NVIDIA has released a smorgasboard of proprietary technology over the years (PhysX, shadowplay, G sync, etc.) I guess it's time to add another one to the pile. It seems unusual for them to hype anything up this much so who knows, maybe it'll be good.

From what I've gathered they're not ready to release any new videocards, their follow up to Maxwell, Pascal, manufactured at 20nm shouldn't be ready yet. Even if it was, it probably wouldn't "redefine the future of gaming.

Pascal will be on 16nm next year. There is no 20nm high performance as the node has failed so no gpu's on it. NVIDIA still got to release 980ti and titan yet then that will tide them over. Maxwell is a failed architecture. Can't even shut things off without it screwing up the gpu. It will just be more proprietary crap

I think he's referring to the 4gb 970 that actually runs more like 3.5gb, causing performance problems for anyone running 2 SLI and the fact there was a mis print on the cards specs that took nvidia a year to correct

Redefine the future of gaming...

From that picture (which might be unrelated), it looks like hair. Is it hair? Is it something like the "augmented hair" we saw from Tomb Raider, or what Deus Ex Universe devs are promising for that game? If that's it, it's hardly redefining anything.

There is one corner of the internet you can always rely on for 97% pessimism. Thank you gamespot. Thank you for reminding me that good people can come up with terrible articles and worse (much worse) people can congregate around them.

Do any of you know that these comments go absolutely no where? If you have to get rid of aggression that's natural. Go get rid of it through passion or exercise like a healthy long-termed human-being.

Edit #2 My comment is now "Pending"? That's no way to make things better. Repression of negativity is still repression which is negative. Then again it is game spot. The ghetto of game journalism. Jerks. This site is just yet another conduit for Kotaku anyways.
