Nvidia announces portable Android-powered console

New console dubbed "Project Shield" to stream games from PC, will be powered by Tegra 4 processor; company touts Nvidia Grid cloud-gaming platform.

Graphics card maker Nvidia got the ball rolling at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show by revealing a new portable gaming console/controller hybrid called "Project Shield."

The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.
The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.

The Android-based system runs games from Android's Google Play store and also allows users to stream games installed on their home PC for play on the Shield's screen. Games demonstrated during Nvidia's press conference included Hawken and the PC versions of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed III.

Project Shield is based on the company's recently announced Tegra 4 processor. It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack.

Attached to the controller itself is a five-inch, 1280x720-pixel HD multitouch screen that is based on a clamshell design. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen. There is currently no word on "Project Shield's" price and release date.

Nvidia also pushed Nvidia Grid, a GPU that is specifically made for cloud computing and cloud gaming all across various PCs and smartphones, which was announced back in May of 2012. The card can push out about 240 Nvidia GPUs' worth of power, which is equivalent to about 700 Xbox 360s, according to Nvidia officials at the press conference. Currently, Nvidia's partners in conjunction with the card are Agawi, Cyber Cloud, Cloudunion, G-cluster, Ubitus and Playcast.

It doesn't look bad, but it's not pulling me into buying it. I got the Wii U for the whole gaming experience in your hand. It does the job well, a little slow on loading times, but enough to play video games in another room or while the TV is being used by another person. Fair enough this will do it well with streaming PC games and I would love that, but the layout is pretty 'erm... nasty. I wouldn't mind a Wii U tablet that would stream PC content through it, since it sits nicely in your hands, and is really simple to use as a touch screen device too.

Could this be another wave of different gaming machines? In another article the Ouya was discussed. In the 80's/90's you had the PC, Nintendo and Sony, like now, but also Sega, Commodore 64 and lots of other platforms. Now there is only 3 big ones and the PC with Windows (well Mac and Linux are *beginning* to get more game supported).

I can at the moment either play natively on my gaming PC and the big screen monitors or from the couch on the large TV screen with either a mouse, keyboard, controller or other input devices in both cases.

Why would I want to stream games from my PC to a tiny screen attached to a controller with input lag / delay ? (Look at the thumbstick input lag / delay in the linked video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmfOf1epclc#t=40s)

I think this falls into the category of things nobody really needs but media and marketing try to make you want it, as usual.

I have no interest in this and will continue to just use my controller in front of my monitors or the TV instead, should I feel the need for "console style gaming", but will be following further news about this for amusement.

There may be "interesting" games on the Android store at some point, but I just don't see it happening, besides there's no price announced yet but it appears to be in the 250 to 300 EUR range - that's roughly 1/3rd of a PC that runs every game currently out there, smoothly.

I bet there'll even be a forced online DRM bundled with that thing, so it's basically a stillbirth.

My god it's so ugly, doesn't look comfortable to play and I would not get this out on the bus. This is the best Nvidia could come up with?

This shows how strong the gaming market is at the moment, is like a big chocolate cake, and every one wants a piece of it. So much for the gaming industry having problems huh?

@CaesarIIII The market was the same before the crash in the 80s, flooded by companies that didn't understand what the people wanted, putting out bad/overpriced products hoping to sell on hype and licenses alone. Gaming was exploding then and they all wanted a piece of that pie but inevitably there isn't enough for everyone, I think many of them will be in big trouble in the end.

I agree the market is thriving but if you look at the way games are now being aggressively monetized and the crash of 1983 there are a lot of similarities. I think the rise of Indie developers and digital distribution can save the industry from the corporate monsters though.

@Supabul Ok then. So your suggesting that gameloft don't supply a large number of AAA (by portable standards) games. And also that all gamers want AAA games on every single fucking piece of tech that I own.

Also about steam box, half life 3.

@Supabul Steambox will actually have plenty of AAA exclusives, as steam is owned by Valve, and PC already has plenty of AAA games. If they could only get Blizzard to put their games on steambox they might even win next gen console war, but I doubt that will happen, especially after the Dota incident.

@vunacar You do realise the PC has lost almost all of it's AAA exclusive franchises do you? Do I have to remind you there is no more STALKER? Do I have to remind you Crysis is no more an exclusive? Oh and don't start with the MMOs. When we talk about AAA gaming , MMOs don't count.

@andrew_ribbons @vunacar No you cannot. You need a PC that has Guild Wars 2 installed and be able to at least process it. This thing (I can't call it a handheld) just let's you see and play on the toilet.

thats not true MS and Sony entered into the field, allbeit with a huge buyin for MS since their console tanked even several generations down the line.

Companies like steam and nvidia have the clout and business connections to break in... whos makin console gpus' afterall?

they just need a better product than this

@JoSilver @Supabul Humiliating? You're joking right? Steam is doing better because they have a huge fanbase , however , if you want to play any sports games , any NFS , any battlefield or Mass Effect 3 , EA grabs the money with origin. Not to mention they keep their older games on Steam just to suck up money from there too. They are on 2 fronts. They are both with and against Steam. They get loads of money from older PC games too from websites like gog.

@Supabul Yes , while this is true , a casual **** will never look for exclusives when buying his device. He'll look for a social friendly device that can give him cheap games on the go with good graphics and the device has to be very expensive so he could brag about it.

@blakeney @marlobc I'd rather pay money for Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the movie with David Hasselhoff, than "Nvidia, producer of Shield" the gaming device.

This thing is useless without a top tier rig. But it's ok if you want to play your PC on the toilet and you don't afford a big enough LCD in the bathroom.

well i hope more companies make things like this, im sick an tired of the big two companies monopoly on console gaming ....especially after hearing their plans to block used game sales, not to mention the membership fee's.... such a thinly veiled money gouge, to that end i hope sonys and ms consoles are stillborn.

@obsequies people im not rooting for this thing, i dont like portable gaming... i just dont see myself having the time on the go to play anythin more than angry birds, the concept of a nother company entering the console field is great.... if they made a console it would be even more interesting... nvidia sells gpus to console makers, its VERY possible they could make somthin worth our while in the future

Wasn't only Sony that surprised the market, i remember having a similar reaction when Microsoft announced the Xbox, " A Operating System developer making a gaming console " What a joke !!

Before the Xbox and the Play Station, all other consoles where make by * Gaming Companies * only.

@SauhlGood @Darnasian

While thats kinda true... look at the "electronic music" situation right now... its WAY over saturated... qaulity has been driven down and prices have stayed the same.

Its now in a situation where you can have produced the finest piece of deep/tech house going, but if you are not affliated with the right people, and you dont gig at the right venues, its just not going to sell.

I know Music and Games consoles are totally different... just pointing out that more compitition isnt ALWAYS a good thing.

Im thinking back to the early mid 90s, where everyone and his dog was having a go at making consoles... even phillips had some gaming system... we had the NeoGeo handheld systems amoung a ton of others (anyone remember "Bar Code Battler"??).. and then to top it off in a moment of crazyness... Sony stepped into the Arena... lol Sony you say? what they gonna do? a walkman console... then they hit us with the Psx and the market exploded back to a "good" place.

@SauhlGood Speaking from a consumer perspective , yes it may be better , at least concerning the prices. However , the quality may remain the same or deter. After all , we are talking about huge corporations. In their shoes , you'd want to keep this monopole as much as possible , if this falls , you want to save money but still deliver satisfaction among customers. Fresh idea are good for evolution , but it has been proven they don't necessarily make a nice profit. They have to be embraced slowly and we need to have as much info as possible. For example : this article is a mere tease of what the final product might be , look like or do.
