Nvidia announces portable Android-powered console

New console dubbed "Project Shield" to stream games from PC, will be powered by Tegra 4 processor; company touts Nvidia Grid cloud-gaming platform.

Graphics card maker Nvidia got the ball rolling at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show by revealing a new portable gaming console/controller hybrid called "Project Shield."

The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.
The future of gaming, according to Nvidia.

The Android-based system runs games from Android's Google Play store and also allows users to stream games installed on their home PC for play on the Shield's screen. Games demonstrated during Nvidia's press conference included Hawken and the PC versions of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed III.

Project Shield is based on the company's recently announced Tegra 4 processor. It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack.

Attached to the controller itself is a five-inch, 1280x720-pixel HD multitouch screen that is based on a clamshell design. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen. There is currently no word on "Project Shield's" price and release date.

Nvidia also pushed Nvidia Grid, a GPU that is specifically made for cloud computing and cloud gaming all across various PCs and smartphones, which was announced back in May of 2012. The card can push out about 240 Nvidia GPUs' worth of power, which is equivalent to about 700 Xbox 360s, according to Nvidia officials at the press conference. Currently, Nvidia's partners in conjunction with the card are Agawi, Cyber Cloud, Cloudunion, G-cluster, Ubitus and Playcast.

No thanks.

@Born_Lucky That's probably not going to be what it looks like on release. It's as bulky as an original Xbox controller...I don't think anyone wants to go back to those days *shudders*

whats the point of portable devices with the panoply of mobile games we got nowadays? Sure you dont get the same titles (like you will never see a zelda game on phone) But what kind of games will Nvidia portable machine offer?? Angry birds v7438748356 ?? Might as well stick to my phone if I want to play one of those

@GamerOuTLaWz Actually, with an emulator, you can very easily see a Zelda game on a phone.

Nvidia Shield looks great (not as portable, i.e. small as a Vita or 3DS), but if Sony accomplish what I hope for Gaikai and are able to incorporate the Vita with the new PS, the Shield would be meaningless. At the same time though, it doesn't take any clear portable gaming market away from Apple, Sony, Nintendo or android devices, but introduces portable gaming to PC gamers and their exclusive games. Price of the device will have a greater impact in the long run.

Hm? I'm going to take a "wait and see" stance on this right now. For this to even be considerable, it would need a WiFi option. I refuse to pay a monthly bill for gaming. Which the more I think about it, already serves as a major drawback competitively.

The fact that it relies on streaming makes it less portable without paying a monthly bill. I can take my 3DS and Vita anywhere and play games...retail and digital.

I must say, I have trouble understanding why developers keep chugging out one portable after another. Can this really be profitable? I mean, i know alot of people in my network who have a ps3 or an xbox, but i dont think i know anyone who has a ds or a vita?? Who buys these things anyway? I dont mean to diss the people who do, im just curious! I have never spent a penny on a portable system and i doubt that i ever will. The reason is simple, with their miniscule screen and low-end capabilities they provide only fraction of the entertainment value that full gaming consoles and pc's do, yet the price tag does not reflect this at all. My point is, how can this be profitable for the companies? Wouldnt it make more sense to invest the money into one full size gaming console and perfect it as much as possible rather than chugging it into lackluster portables?

@jcr8 Power isn't everything. That's a phrase you should always remember.

Handhelds are clearly profitable, otherwise they would have died long ago. Instead of observing from the outside, you should try some portable games yourself. You might find that they offer more than a "fraction of the entertainment." What does that even mean, anyway? Entertainment value is subjective. Some people will get more entertainment out of something than others.

@King9999 I wasnt necessarily talking about value in terms of hardware power, but rather the entire experience as a whole. In my opinion a big screen and a good sound system will always beat a screen that i have to squint at. But its true that its all subjective.

@jcr8 I would disagree about handhelds providing only a fraction of the entertainment consoles provide. The Nintendo DS was very unique because of its two screens, and developers were allowed to create games on that system that would've been impossible on the consoles or PC simply because of the added screen. On top of that, there are many extremely high-quality games for handhelds, and that has been true ever since the dawn of the Gameboy. Handhelds are useful for long plane rides, train rides, burning time, waiting in a doctor's office, etc. On top of that, the majority of handhelds...I believe...are sold to children and are a godsend to parents who need something to keep their kids occupied on car rides and errands. There's definitely profit to be had.

@sam628 Quite simple really the card they are developing puts out the same power as 240 current GPUs or 700 Xbox 360s working in tandem although it doesn't actually say what kind of GPU. Its a cloud gaming system so this is actually a server they are talking about, don't get excited this isn't something you'll be installing into your rig... Not that you could cool it anyway

The question people should be asking: How many of these will have to sell for the product to be a success? Let's be realistic here, it's going to have to be 10m+ to garner any interest whatsoever from ANY 3rd parties. And with that sort of mountain to climb, i cannot see something lumpy and fugly like this taking off.

what an odd time to release a big bulky handheld. It's only slightly intriguing feature will probably underwhelm because of lag. Tegra 4 will be big for other mobile platforms though, I guess. Who cares. Sorry I just can't get excited about mobile gaming anymore. I have a 3DS. Looking forward to Fire Emblem and the next mobile Zelda game but thats about it. iOS games are 95% junk and Android are about 97% junk. Mobile gaming peaked with the DS, never to return to that glory.

This is an experiment waiting to go, very, very wrong. Specially when Steam is planing to do something similar, that will be 100 times better.

Poor design. You would think a chip maker would be very critical of the design and feel of the device, but they make something from the 90's that failed......

Am I one of the only people that doesn't see a future with Android gaming? I'm just not seeing Android as a console/PC replacement OS right now. It has literally almost zero support, and the little support it has are from studios with meh games. Sure that could change in a year. But who goes out there and buys a portable gaming console, that doesn't have one single must-have game on launch organised?I wish people would stop trying to fragment the gaming industry and just stick to 3DS, PS Vita and tablets for portable gaming fronts.

Streaming? No thanks. Nothing is more annoying then trying to watch a video on online only to have it start lagging because of connection issues, having to restart the buffering because of some error, or having the internet go down and being screwed.

Im not sure wre your at... but in uk theres a network of free WIFI if you are with the right company/s and you can pretty much pick up Wifi anywhere... thats what i mean in terms of playing it on a bus.

I think they are thinking ahead, to a time where "most" have access to a Wifi network.

Otherwise are they honestly thinking we are going to anywhere near our actual Pc's and choose to play on this "beast" (<that is in no way a compliment to it! :P )

But that said... this system still has fail written allover it just like On-live and all the other crap we have forgot about

@blakeney @andrew_ribbons It's very similar in the US. If you access the internet with a cable company, they allow you access to their wifi hotspots around the city. The only difference is the WiFi hotspots aren't prevalent ( i only ever got it to work once).

OMG this sounds soooo fun... i just leave my pc runnign while i go out somewhere.... sit there on the train w/e playing my fav pc title (not 100% sure how streaming works, but i take it, its actually running on my pc while im playing it on this?), then just as i get to a good bit... my missus comes home and is like "OOshhh its like t'blackpool illuminations in ere" then turns my pc off....

Baiclly i just cant see this being very practical.... and thats without even mentioning the fact that the controller part of it looks like an Xbox pad (my least fav pad of the big two) after getting ran over by a cartoon steam roller......

Stick to GPU's and other fancy GFX stuff Nvidea.... imo this sucks worse then Tulisa from N-dubz!!:P
