NPD: Fable II hits 1.2M in US, MGS4 goes platinum

Final 2008 sales figures paint mixed picture for PS3, 360 exclusives, as Resistance 2, Little Big Planet score 600K while Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts unscrews only 140K.

When industry research firm the NPD Group released its final 2008 sales figures earlier this month, the US software best-seller list was topped by four Wii titles. The remote-bundled Wii Play was the top title of the year with 5.28 million units, followed by Mario Kart Wii (5.0 million units), the balance-board-accompanied Wii Fit (4.53 million units), and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (4.17 million units). In fact, according to recent NPD data analysis by industry site Gamasutra, 49 percent of all games sold in the US last year were for a Nintendo console.

The Wii's domination of the software charts pushed almost every exclusive for another console out of the top 10 list. The sole exception was Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. The sequel to Epic Games' highly regarded Blockbuster sold just over 2.31 million copies, thanks to rave reviews, a dedicated fan base, and Microsoft's massive marketing machine.

No Caption Provided

Though Gears 2's success was no surprise, given the steady drumbeat of sales-milestones announcements, it was less clear how Xbox 360 exclusives outside the top 10 fared. NPD provided final 2008 US sales figures to GameSpot for two 360-only titles from Microsoft's internal studio system: Lionhead's Fable II and Rare's Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The difference between the two was striking: The former RPG sold 1.2 million units, while the latter eked out a mere 140,000 units in US sales (a fact that isn't stopping Banjo-Tooie from hitting Xbox Live in April). According to the story mentioned above, 360 and original Xbox games made up 19 percent of US software sales in 2008.

No Caption Provided

The year's top PlayStation 3 exclusive didn't quite match Gears 2, a fact to be expected given the console's smaller installed base and its one fewer year on the market. Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, GameSpot's 2008 Game of the Year, was the biggest exclusive for Sony's platform, racking up over 1 million in domestic sales. In June, Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Kaz Hirai said the game had sold 3 million units worldwide in the two weeks after its release. Some 500,000 copies of MGS4 sold in Japan during its debut week, while 775,000 units were bought during its first 18 days on the US market.

No Caption Provided

Unfortunately for Sony, its first-party PS3 exclusives didn't fare quite as well. Despite substantial hype and solid reviews, Media Molecule's quirky platformer Little Big Planet sold only 611,000 units in the US--just less than half its global 1.3 million total. Insomniac's Resistance 2, which wowed critics as much as rival Gears 2, sold only about 600,000 units in the US. Sony game sales--including the PS3, PSP, and still-strong PlayStation 2--made up 32 percent of last year's software sales, according to Gamasutra's NPD breakdown.

Jericho9696* Totally agree with you there, I love my 360 for achievements and because most my online friends play that but theres no doubt PS3 2009 lineup is impressive and I like not hearing in my game console an industrial fan. Both systems are good but this year for me ill be buying more ps3 games

I'm really disappointed LBP didn't do better, it deserved it. Pretty weird that Sony still had such a big percentage of sales despite being in "3rd place," yes I know most of it came from PSP/2, still odd though.

Sins-of-Mosin, your wrong, most of the people bought it to play games, but your right a little because it was cheaper than a Blu-Ray player. 2009 seems the best for PS3, because the line up is just unmatcheble: God of War 3 Uncharted 2 Among Thieves InFamous Killzone 2 Quantom Theory Heavy Rain Now that is just UNMATCHEBLE, if someone has a better line up please, messege me.........

well its only US sales so gears, mgs4, resistance 2 and littlebigplanet should have sold even way more. i know resistance 2 and little big planet have sold more than a mill so thats also good. to bad for economical downturn.

But anyways, this is probably the last generation of consoles for Microsoft and Sony, it cost waaaaaaay too much to develop those consoles and now both companies are losing a heapload of money....

The article also needs to say that a good portion of PS3 buyers have never and will never buy a game. They bought it because it was the cheapest Blu-Ray player at the time.

It's great to see Gears2 do so well. EPIC Games deserves all the success. :) Ninja Gaiden 2 and Left 4 Dead should be mentioned since they aren't on PS3. But I can already hear PS3 Fanboys marching in to claim they play L4D on their high-end gaming PCs. And anyone claiming DVD is holding back the Xbox360 clearly knows nothing about game development.

God of War 3's game engine, has FOUR times the graphical resolution as that of gear 2. Those who say certain ps3 games would be better on the xbox360 are talking nonsense, as Ps3 exclusives cannot appear on the 360 due to the Cell processor, which has processing power the 360 xenos can only dream of so that argument is dead, stop dreaming you are never getting MGS4, GOW3, Killzone 2 as the 360 simply cannot handle these games. On the flip side, the Ps3 can handle any 360 exclusive and maybe even better due to the cell and bluray lol. Sorry DVD is just too much of a bottle neck for HD gaming. 360 is a good console no doubt, but a little out of its league compared to the PS3, just accept it. The Ps3 is more of a hybrid PC/Console anyway and shouldnt be compared to 'normal consoles'. I mean it takes 20 secs to boot up the ps3 and start surfing the net PC style, compared my PC that takes 5 ins boot up!! 360 does not even have these functions lol.

So basically, the same thing we've been hearing all year: Nintendo is crushing the competition like Godzilla crushed buildings in Tokyo. Microsoft is safely sitting at # 2 with it's large install base which was greatly enhanced by it's price drop. Sony is struggling to get consumers to give an S about their exclusive games and validate the need to buy their expensive hardware. As far as Wii Play being #1, it's the controller that is #1, not the game itself. I got that for my cousin who just got a Wii because it was a better deal than just getting a regular controller by itself. It's obvious why it would beat out SSBB, as not everyone who owns the Wii is big into video game characters and/or fighting games. Everyone who owns the Wii IS into bargain deals, which is exactly what Wii Play is.

While I agree with the fanboys about PS3, it does have the possibility for the most longevity, but it's doing horrible in the short term. If you are defending one PS3 over 360 or vise versa, your really missing out on some good gaming, just get em both. And anyone still playing the Wii (which apparently almost half of gamers) I feel sorry for you, as you are playing gimmicky crap.

i favor the ps3 myself, but all the fangirls out there should chill about criticizing the wii. not all gamers wait for the next fps after they finished an fps. i love the variety that mario galaxy and zelda provides for solo play. it makes me glad that my girlfriend finally got into gaming because of wii fit and animal crossing and nothing beats the fun out of playing mario kart, wii sports and ssbb when i have guests. is this bad for gaming? don't think so.

Am I the only one who thinks this article is retarded? How in the hell is 600k+ unit sales bad? Considering the install base in the US is only about 3 million, and the fact that both games sold a bucketload more units in other territories, I find it hilarious that the author of the article thinks the two games "didn't fare quite as well".

What is so sad about a free remote with a game? Who gives a sh*t that Wiiplay sold the most, it makes sense doesn't it? Why don't ya stop b*tchin about game sales and just play your games instead of lurking the GameSpot news finding new reasons to be pissed at eachother. Real gamers play their games, and live and let be as far as all the systems go.

While the wii has great potential, a lot of it is wasted on casual games, I don't mind casual games (quite a few I like myself), but the market should't be overflouded with them.

playslaves will be pissed. but at least, sony still has .32 of the software share. What can MSFT do to do better in 2009? I still think that banjo 3's complexity is steep for kids and casual gamers, while the game is too cute and not appealing enough for the average beer-binger college student aka the halo nation.

@ frazzle00 Fair enough. I agree, it's all subjective (even amongst my circle of friends I am in the minority when it comes to my opinions on the likes of Halo, Fable, and Assassin's Creed). Typing up this post has actually kind of inspired me to start up a blog (on this site) in regards to the various issues of debate, concern, and interest (all relating to games, of course). Hopefully level-headed folk like you will join me there! :)

masterclone@ actually MGS sold 3 million WORLD WIDE but only sold 1 million in the U.S. where as Gears 2 sold 2.3 million in the U.S. alone. This article is kind of poorly written.

hopefully killzone 2 is greatly marketed because I know a lot of people who loved killzone and are surprised when I say its coming out really soon. Also i heard somewhere that game developers are starting to prioritize the ps3 after seeing all the things it can do.

first of all, masterclone is completely right, and his statement that mgs4 has been out far longer than gears 2 goes for all the wii titles as well. wii play, which is 80% accessory and merely 20% game, was released last year and so it had an extra 9 months of sales racked in for its 5 million. same goes for all those wii titles actually since mariokart, supersmash bros, and wii fit were all released early in the year, so this is kind of a bias article eventhough im not denying that (unfortunately) nintendo is leading in virtually every way

@Severe_Gamer I am not going to flame you; your post is perfectly reasonable. I just wanted to point out that a lot of what you said is highly subjective. So you prefer PSN titles to Xbox Live Arcade titles, and ditto with big name exclusives. That's fine. Obviously however there are people whose preference lies in the other direction (I am one of them :P). That coupled with the cheaper price point has made the Xbox 360 more popular in the US. In all honesty if the PS3's price point doesn't change soon, I don't think much will change this year.

"koi_SHOW Posted Jan 28, 2009 3:12 am CET what the...MGS4 sells 3 million worldwide while GeOW2 sells 2.31 million and MGS4 is considered less successful? article fail" Research fail, Gears 2 sold so far is 4.43 million , America/EU/Others. It hasn't released in Japan (yet). MGS4 has sold 3.82 million so far, being out longer and with a Japan release. So, in terms of sales, yes Gears 2 is more succesful. Took my data from vgchartz.com just so you know i didn't just make up numbers :p

Why are people so shocked LBP sold so pourly noone I know that is not really into game sknows anything about it. The advertisements for the game are terrible. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the game but it puzzles me why people thought it was going to be a system seller.

While I'm not much of a Wii fan, I can see why its doing so well. I'm a little disappoint Sony isn't doing better in sales, though. Sony is pushing the envelope in downloadable games (see: WipEout HD, Pixel Junk Series, Flower, Warhawk, Fat Princess), they are releasing great triple AAA exclusives (see: Resistance 2, Uncharted, Killzone, InFamous), and niche/unique retail games with huge budgets and production values (see: Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet, Disgaea, Metal Gear). Make no mistake, I enjoy Gears and I thought Braid was brilliant, but Halo and Fable bore me and I play all the other 360 "exclusives" on my PC. XBLA has superior functionality to the slowly-catching-up PSN, but it costs 50 bucks a year (not unreasonable, granted, but it adds up). For me it's about the games and Sony really delivered this past year. Hopefully the sales will catch up soon... :( Don't waste time calling me a fanboy or troll, if you are going to argue, please argue my points. What am I missing?

If I remember, the Resistance series is little more than a typical shooter with good graphics. In a day in age where we have games like Call of Duty coming out on a yearly basis, it takes a little more than just pasting together a shooter for it to sell well. You either need a preexisting fan base such as Halo 3 had or some new interaction that plays an important role such as how Gears of War lets you take cover or CoD reduces accuracy as you fire. Functionally, Resistance plays little differently than any other shooter I've ever seen and certainly doesn't have the preexisting fan base. Overall, these results aren't at all surprising. The large fanbase of MGSIV insured it's success. LBP's short "campaign" and old fashioned game play limited it's success.
