Now Playing: GS News Update: No Virtual Console For Nintendo Switch At Launch

The Nintendo Switch is also releasing without any video-streaming services such as Netflix or YouTube. As with the Virtual Console, those features could be released later.

In addition to confirming the Virtual Console news, Nintendo shared some additional insight about how the eShop will work on the Nintendo Switch. First, users will need to download a system update at launch to access it. "The system update downloads in the background, is designed to install quickly and doesn't disrupt gameplay," Nintendo said.

Additionally, the eShop will have a "news feature" that will inform people about "the latest additions to Nintendo eShop, as well as providing information about upcoming games and other updates from Nintendo."

Nintendo also clarified more about how users can share funds across Nintendo devices.

"People who already have funds in their accounts on other Nintendo devices can access them using a shared wallet that works on Nintendo Switch as well," Nintendo said. "Once they link their Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account and then their Nintendo Account to their Nintendo Switch system, this functionality becomes possible."

Finally, Nintendo said that people can buy digital Nintendo Switch games through Nintendo.com; the games will then download at home or on the go, provided there is a Wifi connection.

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3.

And here we go. It's either...

"No VC at launch? Nintendo sucks!"

or...

"The VC launched with the Switch but it sucks!"

What do you want; For Nintendo to launch the VC in time with the Switch only to have it be the hot mess that it was on the Wii U, or have them push it back for a while so that they could potentially get it right?

The silver lining on this is that it sounds like at least the day 1 update won't be the same hot mess that it was on the Wii U.

@Moofey: They've had 3 consoles already to work with (Wii, 3DS, Wii U and arguably the NES classic) how much more time do they need to "get it right"? Why do they need YEARS to put games on the virtual console like Pokemon Snap when it's already out in other regions?

I understand that every console does this now (which I like to interpret as "All the new consoles suck", but I can see how some people would like each of them), but this is a terrible thing to put on the back burner.

The Switch is already suffering from a lack of interesting launch titles, and considering how many gamers skipped the WiiU, many of the Nintendo games re-released in that time could have really helped pass the time until there are more new games for Switch.

It's a simple task to run an emulator. It's a simple task to sell ROMs. If Nintendo doesn't have them for some reason, they can find ROMs for their own games online. (And laughably, have been caught reselling them in the past).

So one can only surmise they do this on purpose.

Not great for a portable to be missing virtual console games. I really wish Nintendo had waited till fall and had it all more together. They will dangle in the wind for several months after launch. Not coming out strong.

Come on guys....was anybody expecting Nintendo to actually have a working virtual store during the Switch's launch?

It's like believing in Santa Claus.

So all the die-hard Nintendo fans have to deal with an unfinished system during this soft-launch so Nintendo can finish up the system updates for the holidays. Your reward for being an early adopter is being an unpaid beta tester.

@fig56: PS and Xbox are trying to do a million things at once with all their stupid social crap and snapping etc. Video of the Switch home screen shows it's just a row of games and a row of icons at the bottom. It's pretty much the same interface they've been using for the Wii U but simplified except It doesn't have the Miiverse anymore. They're actually going backwards and they can't even manage to launch with video apps or Virtual Console.

@fig56: Well it's indicative of their competency when they can't even get basic applications at launch on their system which is supposedly easier to program for.

@catsimboy: All of them do the same thing. PS4 just added extrernal hard drives when Xbox1 had it from the start. Xbox is still updating their UI. Steam has recently made updates and changes as well. People just like thier instant gratification button pushed.

@catsimboy:

I, honestly, don't mind that one bit. I don't own a Wii U, so the games in the first 4 months are all something I'm interested in. I'm beta testing their online, and I'll give them a lot of feedback so it is up to snuff when others start adopting the system.

That being said, not including VC at launch is a misstep.

The amount of negative vibes this is giving people is alarming. Virtual Console is definitely something Nintendo should've had in there from the start. I suspect it's due to the amount of money Nintendo has. Thanks to the failure of the Wii U, they simply don't have the budget to produce a high-caliber console anymore. Part of the reason why I pre-ordered mine is because I want to support Nintendo and help keep them in the race, since I do believe this will be their last console.

@lodmot347: A theory I've seen is that they're using the March launch as a "soft-launch" to get all the die-hard fan sales out of the way early. Then when the holidays come around casual people won't have to compete with the die-hards for systems. Nintendo knows their hardcore fans will buy the system no matter what so they're going to use the extra months to finish up the system software for the general consumer during the holidays.

@lodmot347: Nintendo has billions of dollars and no debt (unlike Sony) Nintendo makes these decisions based on "Nintendo logic" if you don't know what that is you haven't been a fan for long LOL!

@lodmot347: I don't agree that it is bare-bone, you are arguing that the reason it is not as powerful as the competition is that Nintendo is short on funds. Nintendo is very secured financially and their strategy to not participate in the specs war has only bare fruit to them so far.

@lebanese_boy: Actually I didn't say they couldn't afford to make a powerful console, I just said it wasn't high-caliber. The console doesn't need to be powerful, that doesn't bother me. But it's very bare-bones, as in there's literally almost nothing else you can do with the console besides playing games. I should probably note that this doesn't bother me personally, but on a grand scale, taking into account all other potential customers other than myself, I feel like it's something people aren't expecting. A lot of people would want things like a Netflix app, a web browser, etc. There's a lot of customers out there in many different situations. Some of them might actually want the Switch as their go-to device.

If Nintendo actually does have the money to do it, then they really have no excuse for making a bare-bones console like this. But just because something isn't powerful doesn't mean it's "bare-bones".

@lodmot347: This has absolutely nothing to do with money because, again, Nintendo has tons of it. The Switch, in my opinion, is a bit rushed and features such as web browser and apps will come eventually. This is purely software and can come via an update. If you're looking for a multimedia device in Nintendo you're looking in the wrong place because their products have always been primarily or exclusively about games. Switch will have basic stuff like netflix, crunchyroll and a web browser but as it is with every other single game console: you're better off using those features on other much more capable devices such as smartphones or PC.

@lebanese_boy: Well quite honestly a web browser and a Netflix app is enough in my opinion. Once you have a web browser, you'll already have access to things like YouTube, Facebook, etc. o u o
I do agree it was a bit rushed. They would've had a more significant impact if they had just waited until this upcoming Christmas to release it.

I have no problem with this, I'll be busy with Zelda BotW anyways, plus other games. And it doesnt say that they will never have it, just at launch, like the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS when they first launched
