No, Tekken X Street Fighter Is Not Canceled

Katsuhiro Harada confirms the long-in-development game remains in development, but doesn't say much else.

Crossover fighting game Tekken X Street Fighter remains in development, producer Katsuhiro Harada assures fans as part of a new interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. The game was announced five years ago this month during San Diego Comic-Con 2010, but we still don't know a lot about it. That's not changing, but at least fans can rest assured that the game has not been canceled.

In the interview, translated by Siliconera, Harada was jokingly asked if he and Namco had forgotten about the game.

“That's not true!" he responded. "I've been saying this since before, but the fact of the matter is that we're at a pretty far stage into its development."

As for what's holding the project up, Harada didn't say. But it's possible that the designer's work on other games such as Tekken 7, Pokken Tournament, Project Treasure, and a PlayStation 4 virtual reality title called Summer Lesson may be taking up a good chunk of his time. Whatever the case, Harada stressed that the foundation for Tekken X Street Fighter at least is in place right now.

“It might seem like we haven't started on it at all, but the character lineup has been decided upon since a very long time ago," he said. "And we've already finished the polygon models, moves, and systems."

Responding to concerns about Tekken X Street Fighter has become a regular thing for Harada. This is now the third straight year that Harada has confirmed that development remains ongoing, issuing previous statements in August 2013 and then again at Comic-Con 2014 before his comments this week.

Finally, with Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 both on the way, Harada said Namco is having a tough time deciding on the launch timing for Tekken X Street Fighter.

This matches up with what Harada said last year.

"It's still in development, and it is moving forward, but that's on the development side," he explained at the time. "So obviously, with all of the products, there's that special timing that we need for that to have its own spotlight. So on the marketing side, it's a special situation, but we can say that it hasn't been cancelled, so please relax."
