No New Assassin's Creed Game Coming For 2019

A two year odyssey.

Ubisoft has revealed that it will not launch a new Assassin’s Creed title in 2019, and instead will support this year’s entry, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, with additional content designed to keep players engaged in the game. Speaking at GamesCom, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that Assassin's Creed Odyssey's 2018 release was enabled because both 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey were being developed at the same time, and Odyssey will not be immediately followed by another game.

"On Assassin's, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin's next year," said Guillemot. "It's just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you're not going to have a fully fledged one."

Now Playing: No New Assassin's Creed Coming In 2019 - GS News Update

Asked whether this meant there would be a spin-off title or something smaller instead of a brand new, fully fledged entry in the Assassin's Creed series, Guillemot confirmed that this would not be the case either.

"What you'll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin's Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you're going to get in for a couple of years, actually."

Reflecting on the decision to stop Assassin's Creed's yearly launch schedule and give Ubisoft's developers the time to reinvent the series for Assassin's Creed Origins, Guillemot said it was ultimately worth it.

"[The time] gave the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to. The community has been responding very well to it and when I see what we are bringing with Odyssey I know that the community that got back in with Origins will be amazed."

Assassin's Creed Odyssey launches on October 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Set in Ancient Greece, and you can choose to play as a man or a woman. GameSpot has had the opportunity to play the game at length, and you can read our Assassin's Creed Odyssey preview here for more on it.

What a strange article. Should we expect a new game every year? You could literally say the same thing about almost all games. Oh there is no sequel to X game coming out next year. Duh.

you guys are saying that there are no more Assassin's Creed games being made... may i point out to you guys that Assassin's Creed games are the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! i know that i don't have an opinion but i really do respect other people's opinions but the Assassin's Creed franchise is the greatest and if you guys think about it, there are more places that the Assassin's Creed franchise can go... like, here's a perfect example... they could take it to Ancient Greece or to the Bahamas to discover the Bermuda Triangle... that could be a mission but you know what i mean... do you know what i did when i heard about Assassin's Creed: Odyssey... this is the truth i actually screamed in excitement...

Black Flag was the best AC. AC 3 never happened.

As others have said, I stopped at AC3. That was the end of the true AC story.

But the historical settings always intrigue me. I plan to play Origins and Odyssey eventually. Maybe it'll give me the itch to play Unity/Syndicate (2 other historical settings I like and apparently their own self-contained animus metastory).

@saint311: Actually played Syndicate a while back when it was free with PS plus. Very enjoyable game. It inspired me to pull out Unity from my basement, where it has been gathering dust after playing it for one hour when it came out (it was really unplayable). They patched it up pretty well (huge patch mind you, so have some diskspace available). It's still a beautiful game with an interesting story and set at a great point in history. Although I would advise to set the language to French with English subs for more immersion (otherwise you'll hear French people with a Cockney accent lol).

It would be cool if they made 1 cohesive game from the perspective of outside the animus. With what hapens in the real world this entire time. You'd have a bunch of different playable characters from Desmond on up. I think it could make a very interesting story by meshing the gameplay of AC, Wildlands, and Watch Dogs. Some gameplay elements from each, but made by the AC team.

I've played every AC game at some point in time. I gave myself the biyearly treatment of the series because I like the gameplay but didn't want to get burnt out from the series.

Right now I'm playing Origins for the first time even though I bought it at launch. It is by FAR the best AC game there is. I like it better than every other one.

There is a ridiculous amount of side missions and quests to do. It seems endless without even doing the main missions. Just a crazy amount of content. I probably would've forgotten all about playing this game even though I had it since launch if it weren't for MS putting the season pass on sale last week. I read the player reviews and people were saying that the Pharaoh dlc was almost another whole game.

So I scooped it up and have been loving it. I'm level 23 (of 45) already and only have 25% of the map revealed.

If you haven't played this game, and like AC games, this is the crown jewel. The only negative, if you could call it that, is that there is too much content in the base game. I could easily see myself putting upwards of 100 hours into this game because I'm anal about doing almost every mission. They also improved many features because the game version implies it's had numerous patches. This game was probably a nightmare for bug testers, lol.

I like that they see it as an improvement on Origins, which imo did a lot of things right, and now we get stuff like better combat? Feeling the hype now. As for the launch-schedule I think not releasing a game every year can only be good for the franchise, if we get results like Origins. Now when they say they will keep making content to Odyssey for a long time I'm skeptical though. They said this about Origins, but what we got were two expansions (one of them barely that), and that was it.

You're not really keeping a game alive when March was the last time you added any kind of content. Which was a shame (don't care now busy with GoW) but I probably would've played ACO a good deal longer if it kept up the content, and I'm not alone in that. I actually wanted to at that point because I had upgraded my character in many ways, and getting new challenges would have been nice. Anyways, looking forward to Odyssey!

Sounds good. I think the break a couple years ago was good for the series. Origins was great and had good changes. Looking forward to Odyssey.

From what i can see, the reason for delay its to implement the new real time ray tracing from nvidia newest gpu would made the future games look a lot more realistically and beautiful

Good. Only decent things about these games are the settings.

Boring piss easy gameplay, cut and paste mission design, awful stories, ect..

UBI... the masters of open world bloat

@bussinrounds: The main reason I was playing AC games was because of the overarching story with those aliens that created mankind. Now, it's like you pop out of the animus and spend a few minutes listening to dialogue that has no real relevance ultimately to the rest of the game and then back in the animus again. Even the concept of the animus now is almost totally gone. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next games they abandon the whole concept and just have the player playing a character in whatever time period, dealing with the character's personal story, and each game would just be a bunch of non-related self-contained personal stories.

I am dissapoint Ed, AC is my last remaining favourite series, after MGS and Batman ended and resi turned into COD.

Why don't they hire more studios working in different project simultaneously?

Ok, the Odyssey team will need 2 years for the next installment, but what the Origins team will do?

Work with them? Make 3 years to make a game?

Let me guess...

AC - Battle Royale coming in 2019. (not a full fledged title)

AC - Online in 2020.

This is good news for me. I will spend a lot of this winter playing RDR2 for sure.

After Christmas, if the reviews and views are positive like for Origins, then I will pick this up. I really enjoyed origins a lot.

@mattock1987: Yup. The franchise is over-flooded with games. It would be much more interesting if an Assassin's Creed game was only released every three years or so.

@pmanden: I think so too. It would give them time to make each game really sufficiently different and make progress with all the mechanics or something, so that players feel more interested. It's not exciting when you know next year you get to play the same game, just reskinned with different quests and setting but same mechanics. I guess that's enough to make it a different game, but the problem is the gameplay gets boring quickly given you just played through 50 hours of something similar.

I loved Origins and super excited for Odyssey, it looks great so far. So if taking 2019 off for support of Odyssey and 2020 sees another really cool AC game, awesome.
