No Microtransactions In EA's New Command & Conquer Remaster Collection

EA is working with Petroglyph on the upcoming remasters.

Electronic Arts has shared more details on its upcoming Command & Conquer remasters. In a blog post, EA started off by confirming that it is remastering 1995's Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and 1996's Command & Conquer: Red Alert. That game's expansion packs, including Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermath, will also get remastered.

In its blog post, EA also stressed that the new remasters are coming "without microtransactions," which sounds like good news.

EA is working with Petroglyph Games to develop the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, which comprises Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert. The Las Vegas-based studio has a history with Command & Conquer, as some of its founding members worked on the original game at Westwood Studios before joining Petroglyph.

In its statement, EA said it hopes its partnership with Petroglyph will go a long way toward helping people feel comfortable about how the remaster collection will be handled.

"In addition to the excitement and support of this remaster initiative over the past month, there has also been a healthy skepticism that we can pull this off," EA said. "How are we possibly going to remaster these titles while maintaining the authenticity of the original experiences? Bottom line, there is no better way to achieve this than to partner with some of the talented developers who brought these original games to life."

What's more, EA also confirmed that the original Command & Conquer audio director and composer, Frank Klepacki, has returned to Petroglyph to work on the new remaster collection.

EA also recruited established CG company Lemon Sky Studios to work on the Command & Conquer remaster package. Lemon Sky has worked on loads of games in the past, including Diablo III: Eternal Collection, Spider-Man PS4, StarCraft Remastered, Dead Rising 4, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Bloodborne, Gears of War 4, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, among many others.

There is no word as of yet regarding when the Command & Conquer remaster collection will launch or other key particulars about it, but keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest. EA previously said it it might release the remasters to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary, which could mean they'll launch in 2020.

At E3 this year, EA announced Command & Conquer: Rivals, a 1v1 free-to-play game that is currently available through an alpha. A public release will come later.

This shouldn't even be a new worthy article as this sort of announcement should be normal. Shows how much developers have ruined their names by overcharging and wringing every last penny from customers.

Also as Activision has proven who's to say they won't put paid content in AFTER launch a week down the road? you just can't trust them when they're so slimy these days with how they act.

EA will never learn their lesson if people keep falling into their trap by letting nostalgia guide them. It's all good and well jumping on the bandwagon when a game gets widespread and deserved hate but there's no point if you are going to get your wallets out a year later because a game very personal to you is getting a remaster.

Stop putting the rose tinted glasses on whenever it suits. They've been a cancer in the gaming industry for too long and it's about time they are hit where it hurts.

biggest news EA can give us and they aren't gonna add microtransactions to steal our money. Nice job EA

If this is just gonna be a sloppy remaster like the Starcraft one, i don't care. The games should be redone in a new 3d engine or at least modify the C&C 3 or C&C Generals engine and port them into that. Those engines need some modifications though before that, they need their fps cap removed, and also improved zoom and ultrawide support.

@dragoonmike: most likely reskin's and pallet swaps was what they had planned to add before all the trouble they had this year.

Hell Yeah!

Tiberian Dawn is one of my favorite games ever. The first RA is pretty awesome too.

Some of the Westwood studio devs who worked on the original games, and Frank Klepacki working on it. Perhaps EA is actually listening to us. This is really great!

Though I wonder if this will be more of a remake, than a remaster. I mean there is only so much a resolution upgrade can do here.

That said I hope its great, and I hope they do the same for Tiberian Sun. TS doesn't run well on modern systems.

I would actually look at EA with a more positive position if it turns out to be true. Though, there is a lot of time between now and the release date for things to change, so I'm still reserved for the moment. Red Alert was one of my favourite games in the past. To get a chance to play them again with an updated look would be great.

I tried to get into Grey Goo, but just could not. There was something about it that just didn't have the same spark as the older RTS games.

@lion2447: Grey Goo was alright, but like you it didn't draw me in. The factions weren't all that great in that one. It seemed more like C&C trying to be Starcraft. I prefer the older C&C style over the Starcraft style when it comes to RTS games.

Here's hoping their done well. I'd love to buy these and see them keep making more. We the best of luck we'll see up through Generals and maybe just maybe the momentum will carry through to finally getting a new, proper game released.

I imagine it'll have something in tiny, tiny, microscopic print at the bottom of the game case
"until future patch"

I would fucking hope so. Why is this newsworthy? "They didn't inject shit that no one wants into a remaster"? Is that really how bad the news has gotten? Don't praise them for this.

@UFOLoche: That's how bad the industry as a whole has become; they need to make a point to announce "Hey, we're not going to try and **** you over with aggressive monetization". It's even more pitiable when it's EA themselves who are saying it...the ones who helped "poisoned the well" in the first place.

@UFOLoche: Yep the fact that they even made a statement about it probably means they must have at least thought about it.

This is the sad world we live in now.

Where the news that a remake *does not* include scummy anti consumer practises designed to bilk money out of you is seen as a positive feature. Rather than...you know...the goddamn status quo.

@Dragon_Nexus: Maybe somebody at EA realizes they need to be honest and upfront about this for a while. People are going to be very critical of what EA does. Being transparent is only, hopefully going to help both gamers and EA.

@darkelf83: I'm sure a few people at the company think that...but the higher ups don't care.

That's why in one breath they said "We've learned from Battlefront 2. We need to re-find our moral compass and do better" and then less than a month later they decided to challenge Belgian gambling laws by refusing to remove loot boxes from FIFA, thus ensuring the underage gamblers could still have their fix

@Dragon_Nexus: Has nothing to do with it being a sad world, just EA being terrible at PR and thinking this is something they should be applauded for, while Gamespot, either out of desperation for news or bribery, treats it like it's something that should be applauded for.

I would like to see a GEX remaster or even better a remake of that first game. Also can do a collection like they did with Spiro & Crash, Gex also had the 3 first games that they can also remaster

...and since when did remasters of old games have MT's? That's not a selling point. It's just a confirmation they're not THAT stupid.

@Barighm: Call of Duty 4 got microtransactions added to them after the remaster's release. DMCV4 got a re-release with MTs, too.

@Dragon_Nexus: DMC4 also had a MASSIVELY increased drop rate of souls and orbs, which made the MTs pointless

No microtransactions huh?

Hmmm... it almost seems like EA is starting to think that MAYBE gamers aren't too fond of them.

@videogameninja: As long as FIFA continues to make billions in MTs, and as long as they continue to want to monetise their games in this manner, they'll continue to not care if gamers want them or not.
