Now Playing: No Man's Sky - Review

As promised, Hello Games has now released a new patch for No Man's Sky on PC. While the full patch notes have not yet been released, director Sean Murray wrote on Twitter that the update, available now on Steam and GOG, adds support for "more hardware" and also improves frame rate for lower-spec computers.

A patch for the PlayStation 4 version is also on the way. According to Murray, it will improve stability and "lots more." Patch notes for the console update have also not yet been shared, but the update has been submitted to Sony and should be released "very soon," Murray said.

The developer also wrote on Twitter that "less than one percent" of players have reported issues, though this is presumably only counting people who have filed official support tickets. Whatever the case, Murray said, "We're going to resolve roughly 70% of them this week" with the patches.

While a sales number for No Man's Sky has not been announced, Murray suggested that even 1 percent of players is a big number. "It's pretty crazy for us how many people are playing. And how large a number even 1% of that user base is," he said.

No Caption Provided

Finally, he said Hello Games is "totally focused" on customer support efforts right now. After issues are resolved, the studio will "move onto improving and adding features to the game."

Murray has talked about adding new content like "the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters." He has also teased that major-sounding new features could come in the future.

"If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilizations… that isn't what NMS is," he said. "Over time it might become some of those things through updates."

Some updates will be free, while others could cost money. Murray recently said he was "perhaps naive" to suggest that No Man's Sky would only have free updates.

In other news about No Man's Sky, a dataminer has found references to poop and Xbox One. For more on No Man's Sky, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

Am I the only one that's really enjoying this game? I'm about 22 hours in on PC and I haven't had many problems at all. I think it crashed once early on and I hit a couple minor bugs/glitches here and there but that's it.

I get that there could me much more to the game, but for only like 11 people or so working on it...its pretty damn impressive. Obviously its not going to look and feel like a a regular AAA title that has hundreds of people working on it. And look at Hello Games previous works. They basically jumped from a mobile game to creating NMS. That's a massive ambitious leap for them. (but imagine how insane NMS could have been if they did have hundreds of people working on it. I wish they did some sort of crowdfunding a couple years back to hire additional help to make NMS even better. They would have gotten an enormous amount of support)

I'm really looking forward to the content they add to NMS. I kinda feel like I should slow down so I don't get sick of it before they make it even better lol. I still love it even though it didn't reach its maximum potential.

@jdkillustration: you do understand that the game is only 2.6gb and HG didn't really craft any of the planets, right? The contents are all generated automatically by several algorithms, Hello Games only had to do the story dialogue and other flavor scripts, and some assets for the rendering. It's some work for 11 ppl, yes, but it's not as huge a project as you think it is. And it isn't a AAA title by any means, so curb your enthusiasm.

@jyml8582: This is typical new-age gamer bullshit! You have no idea what was implemented in order to achieve what they did for such a small team. ALL the assets in the game had to be created just like any other game; textures had to be made, all the props for the flora and fauna also had to be made and that all had to be implemented into the algorithm. As well as the basic A.I. the game uses and all the gameplay elements also ALL had to be coded to work. The game isn't just plug in this superformula and voila we have our game....it took WORK....like 3 years of non-stop work!!

@jyml8582: The algorithm is only just that: an algorithm. It produces NOTHING without the framework of the game that's built around it. The amount of work done by this team is incredible, whether you want to see it that way or not. Software engineering and game development as well are incredibly difficult jobs that require years of intense work that might not ever pay off. In this case, it did. In a huge way. Were there features cut? Of course. Did Sean Murray get ahead of himself and stoke the fires too frequently. Absolutely. This still doesn't detract from the immense amount of work the team did.

@NbAlIvEr10000: Yes , it is noticably smoother on PC when you fly low over a planet surface. The lowest frame rate i am getting in 1440p on 980ti with FXAA is 55 fps , average is 75-80 fps. Before it had some severe drops at times. I can't say everyone's experience will be equal though but my actual PC aside from SSD and graphics card is 6 years old processor wise so you don't need much in that regard to run the game.

@SofaCama: While I understand the dislike of someone going back on their word, it is extremely unrealistic for a small developer to support large amounts of free dlc and updates over the years.

Consider this situation. It's 2 years down the road and the road. They have stuck to their word so far and they have added lots of free dlc, from base building to more in-depth crafting to starship purchases. By this time they have run towards the end of their financial limit to add content, however they have come across an idea that would make the game much much better. Maybe they are able to vastly increase the complexity and variety of planets and creatures throughout the universe. This idea would be a huge undertaking and take a lot of time and money which could put them in the red. Now would you A) not want them to attempt to accomplish this as it would need to be payed DLC and it would go back on their word? Or B) be willing to give them some extra money in order to get this update that would increase your enjoyment of the game?

@cheechdafif: I understand that. But the point is that he promised some things which in themselves made it a lot easier for people to decide to spend top dollar in a game and then, after everyone went ahead and bought the game, he just said the opposite. Just like that.

I for one had some doubts at first on whether to buy this or wait for a discount, and after reading some of his promises my mind was actually eased so I bought it. Now I think I made the wrong choice and probably should have waited.

The problem with Sean is that he always had this "nice guy" attitude, and he gained a lot of trust from the gamers that way, because people were convinced that he was just this normal guy "reaching for the stars" and attempting to do something new for the fan base and saying that if people spend so much for a game they not should have to pay for. free DLC. Now we know he is just another Molyneux.

Right now this talk about being "naive" is just him playing his "nice guy" card again, trying to sell the image that he is just a simple guy way over his head and that he is doing the best he can. It's just like saying "aw shucks about that... that was not I wanted to say... friends?" And we're supposed to forgive that and find some kind of excuses just like the ones you're making.

The fact however is that he lied man. He misled consumers and that is not the way to do business. And just acting like a kid or blinking your eyes won't do. Naive? Please.

He should be more respectful and give some more explanations. I'm positive that if this were EA people would not be as easily convinced. But with EA at least everyone knows what to expect.

Look, I'm not saying the game is not good. I am actualy enjoying it. But at the moment I just think that I could have just as well waited a few months and then buy it for less and not miss out on anything.

Look at it this way: what if a year from now you can buy this for the same price that it is now BUT with all the DLC which would make this a complete game? Would you then not feel cheated for having spent the same amount of money for an incomplete game and still have to buy the DLC?

@SofaCama: Maybe some of the content they are considering is more substantial than they previously envisioned... and if they pull the trigger on these additions it will require quite a lot of dev time / resources.... meaning they'd have to charge for it to make it financially viable. They are still a company, you know that right?

@SofaCama: They're still doing free DLC, all he said was that it was naive to promise that the game would never have paid DLC. It depends entirely on how long people are still interested in seeing the game updated.

@SofaCama: For me, I don't care what a dev says about his/her games. Before buying I watch actual gameplays (posted by gamers) and benchmarks (this means, no pre-order of course). And yes, Sean said many things, he better stfu than keep lying to people.

@NbAlIvEr10000: huge amounts of pop-in, screen tearing, drops in fps bringing the game to a crawl. Hasn't really crashed for me even before the patch unless I try to warp or go through a black hole. It pretty much runs exactly how it always has since day one for me. It'd be nice to have some patch notes cause I honestly don't see any difference.

"As promised"? What, Hello Games has to promise customers that they are going to fix their broken game? I thought that if you delivered a broken product to buyers that if it is defective you are morally bound to fix it. No promise required. You just do it without having to say it. And I love the subtitle, "Hello Games is "totally focused" on customer support right now, will improve the game and add new features later." That just means they can take as long as they want to make the game better. If at all. I'm thinking the latter.

Ps4- No Man's Sky

The game still crash on me after the update. I didn't even get a chance to save. All that work gone....

Never had a PS4 game crash so much. I play 7 Days to Die for crying out loud and it doesn't crash at all.

@vrocka: You must not have played 7DTD for semi-long periods of time then. There is a well-known memory leak currently that happens around 5-6 in-game days if played in one sitting. It's one of the top complaints on the bug report forum along with the half a second frame drop that happens every 5-10 seconds, neither of which were fixed in the last patch.

But I digress. I doubt the NMS freezing issues are a problem for just 1%. Most people don't go rushing to forums to report stuff when it goes wrong. At most, they might try to find a post of some sort that shows the developer is aware of the issue and that's it. From what I've heard (and seen on live streams), this game has some major crash issues.

@ExoticCharm: I have played 7 Days to Die since it was released in June on PS4. I play split-screen with my sister so game sessions can get pretty long. As stated, I never experienced a crash. I have lost game saves (85 days), lag, and a host of other problems with 7 Days to Die.

Still won't run with the patch. I did get it to run however with the recommended work around on the STEAM forum (updated the binary files), however it was waaaay toooo sloooow. So it is possible to get this fixed. I have a Phenom II x6 1050T with 16Gb of RAM and a GTX 970 4Gb graphics card. Plenty of horsepower, just not communicating with the processor. It's possible to get it fixed guys, just not there yet.

@hipstardufus: the experimental build is not a work around, is a "beta patch" from Hello Games, you can join the beta for the patch and test it. I get full 60 fps stable with the experimental build, I am not sure if there is something like this for the GoG version. I refunded my gog version and got the steam instead (because I was having problems streaming the gog version).

Bad patch for me. Before with the exception of some stutter for a few minutes after starting the game it ran pretty smooth at 60fps. Now it caps to 30fps and looks jerky. It appears that they've put in place a limiter that automatically drops you down to 30 if you go below 60.

Edit: So after doing some testing the cap seems to be related to the AA settings, specifically SSAAx4. Turning it to FXAA gets rid of the cap even if I drop a little below 60fps. That's messed up because I've been playing with SSAAx4 since the release of the game with no issues. I hate FXAA. It makes things look blurry and barely helps with aliasing. All this patch did for me was screw up one of the graphics settings I had been using. Hopefully other people will have better results.

@mattcake: Yeah 4 x SSAA is killing my 980ti in 1440p i get an average of 30 fps.

I don't class that as acceptable on 144 hz screen so FXAA jumps it up to 75-80 fps on average.

@mattcake: Yeah, after playing a while with FXAA I started to notice that it looked the same as before.

I found a way around the 30fps cap though. Turn on adaptive vsync and the cap goes away. With SSAA on I still get 50+ fps. No idea why they would enforce such a cap. If someone wanted 30fps they would select it in the options.
