Now Playing: No Man's Sky - Review

[UPDATE] The patch is out now on PlayStation 4. GameSpot downloaded it, but found no patch notes.

The original story is below.

As promised, Hello Games has now released a new patch for No Man's Sky on PC. While the full patch notes have not yet been released, director Sean Murray wrote on Twitter that the update, available now on Steam and GOG, adds support for "more hardware" and also improves frame rate for lower-spec computers.

A patch for the PlayStation 4 version is also on the way. According to Murray, it will improve stability and "lots more." Patch notes for the console update have also not yet been shared, but the update has been submitted to Sony and should be released "very soon," Murray said.

The developer also wrote on Twitter that "less than one percent" of players have reported issues, though this is presumably only counting people who have filed official support tickets. Whatever the case, Murray said, "We're going to resolve roughly 70% of them this week" with the patches.

While a sales number for No Man's Sky has not been announced, Murray suggested that even 1 percent of players is a big number. "It's pretty crazy for us how many people are playing. And how large a number even 1% of that user base is," he said.

Finally, he said Hello Games is "totally focused" on customer support efforts right now. After issues are resolved, the studio will "move onto improving and adding features to the game."

Murray has talked about adding new content like "the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters." He has also teased that major-sounding new features could come in the future.

"If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilizations… that isn't what NMS is," he said. "Over time it might become some of those things through updates."

Some updates will be free, while others could cost money. Murray recently said he was "perhaps naive" to suggest that No Man's Sky would only have free updates.

In other news about No Man's Sky, a dataminer has found references to poop and Xbox One. For more on No Man's Sky, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

@Vividnightmare: Dial it back, buddy. You don't have to wish death on the man.

@Vividnightmare: The sad part is, it seems to be legal to lie about games. Watch Dogs, plenty of game companies do this. I don't actually know why our court system allows this, for this business. Where the fck is consumer protection these days? They did actually lie about meeting people in space. They'll most likely patch it in later. But still, it wasn't there on release day, it was bullsht. I think i might play Mass effect again, it has a universe and theres WAY more to do and the civilizations in the game are much more interesting and Mining and resource grinding is only a small part of it. This game is literally only about resource mining. I've learnt about the GEK civilization adn learnt over 200 words now, they really arent very interesting lol.

@nyran125tk: Read reviews = Dont get f*****

Avatar image for smokeless_0225

I'm pretty sure they told us from the beginning the chances of us meeting another person in space were slim to none.

Avatar image for nyran125tk

@smokeless_0225: He actually said on national t.v and on talk shows that you CAN meet other players but the universe is to large, so it probably won't happen. So...He kind of lied lol. It might of been Hello games's INTENTION to have it, but on release day, it wasn't there. But i can intend to have a GTX 1080, but I don't have one yet. So if i say to people I have a GTX 1080, but it's hidden away. I'm actually lying. I don't have one YET, but I will probably have one in the future. Might be waiting for he 1080Ti though. If i say I have it now, im full of sht, because I don't lol

@Vividnightmare: Gamers are easily fooled and much like final fantasy characters they get amnesia every time a new game arrives. They forgive, forget, and get fooled. That's the cycle. Never ends.

Less than 1%...

"Why the **** lying,

Why you always lying,

Hmmm OMG... Stop fucking lying."

Avatar image for mrmiggins

Omg... the lying so and so. I was somewhat content to think that although I paid a lot of money for this game, at least there might be free extra content down the line that might make it worth the AAA price tag. Yhat's what they promised. Now it's clear it won't be free. Just more hype and deception from these guys. I can assure you I won't be spending another penny on NMS.

This game is crap and what is more astonishing is that there are people defending this game. So funny. I know it hurts when the game you were waiting for sooo long turn out to be a kack but still open your eyes. This is priced as AAA game and tries to be one but is not. Epic Fail.

Avatar image for Pierce_Sparrow

@Karmazyn: So, people who actually like the game for what it is are wrong? That's a new one to me.

Avatar image for Karmazyn

@Pierce_Sparrow: yes they are. Its thanks to them developers are realeasing sub-par products, below any standards and charge extorcious rates for half baked product.

Avatar image for Pierce_Sparrow

@Karmazyn: But again, some people actually enjoy the game for what it is. I do think it needs more content, but I have enjoyed the game so far. No one forces you to buy these games. The game not being what you want it to be doesn't make it a bad game, it simply means it's not wat you want it to be. Do your research before buying and if it's not the game you want it to be, don't buy it.

Avatar image for elmarine2064

@Karmazyn: What's more astonishing is that people have different opinions on games. People like what they like and not what YOU like!!!!

Avatar image for plus_1

Oh Sony, you get behind/financially support all the great games lol. Your fans love you for it though. Their systems could be blowing up and theyd still defend you and your genius decisions. Keep it up Sony, gauge on! Smh, sheeple

This entire game is literally the Mass effect 1 and 2 Planet scanning and mining mini game. But with 18 quadrilion planets. But ive been to 6 planets now and im seriously not doing anything different at all. Also those roundish devices with lazer beams going into the sky dotted around the planet to navigate buildings of interest, has a really annoying Assassins creed style zoom out mechanic, its ok after about 20 of them but After a few hundred of REALLY gets old. I would of rather probably had to create 1 chip to open all 4 places around me at one time , without the zoom mechanic for each individual option. Just see the 4 areas like Farcry 3 and thats that. Move on. Next point of interest. Having to create 4 chips and zoom out 4 times to see 4 places of interest, is really annoying after doing it over and over again. I could go on all day, with this game. It has potential, I MIGHT see whats in the centre of the universe, maybe, if i can handle it. But im not so sure i can grind all the way to the centre of the universe. Love seeing the interesting creatures though.

Avatar image for TUnified

@nyran125tk: I got really frustrated with that as well, especially just trying to find ships. Then I realised that you don't even need to use signal scanners, I just flew around looking for crashed ships and found them much easier and quicker after I figured out what to look for. Same for monoliths and other structures, once you know what each kind of structure looks like, just flying around looking for them is much easier.

Avatar image for nyran125tk

@TUnified: Or maybe one device opens up 20 areas of interest , you zoom out once, Sees the most important one , then it dots 20 location Icons around the area immediately without the zoom mechanics with each individual selection. That would of been at least easier to handle and I wouldn't cringe everytime I see one of those navigational lazer beam devices. There's literallly thousands of these things. To expect the player (even though its just an option, you an just fly around trying to find stuff. But that's not every specific. You get much more specific information from those lazer beamed navigational contraptions. I still want that precision, but without the annoying zoom mechanic and it should flat out open up more icons on the terrain, in one swoop. 20 minimum.

Found no patch notes....

Bit like when I installed the game and found no content

Avatar image for residentgta

This game is not worth a 1$. The most stupid game in the world.

Avatar image for deactivated-5ae060efb3bf6

@residentgta: Glad you spent the time to tell us this. Must be from the camp that can't afford the game then.

Avatar image for aj74

@Triton: I know so many poor ass gamers complaining about 60 bucks

Avatar image for bravenz

@residentgta: You're not worth 1$. Sorry.

Avatar image for wtf_666

"will improve the game and add new features later."

Ummmmm....maybe I'm one of those "entitled" gamers who feels the game should be improved and have all the features intended when the game is RELEASED, not someday in the distant future. If people pay $60 for a game they should get the whole game, not a piecemeal experience. Gaming in the digital age sure does suck.

Avatar image for nyran125tk

@wtf_666: also by the time, Ive finished it, i probably wont come back for seconds, the grinding is to much for me. In Mass Effect 2 the planet scanning got pretty irritating after a few dozen planets. It got better as the player upgraded the mining equipment. So maybe this will to. But there was more to Mass Effect than the planet scanning. this is like an open world version of the Mass effect 2 mining mini game, combined with the Mass effect 1 planet exploration mini game.

Avatar image for bluebugblood

@wtf_666: So your definition of a "whole" game is a game that is bug-free and no longer have any use for future contents? You must have forgotten what it was like pre-digital age.

Avatar image for gruoch1

@wtf_666: The game that was released is the full game. The devs could stop working on new features and move on to something else and this would still be the full game. The devs are working on new features because they want to, not because they need to. If you're that upset, then simply disconnect your console from the internet. No more new content, no more digital age. Two birds with one stone.

Avatar image for Alex00x

Who even plays this crap? It's like a $20 psn/xbox arcade game sold for $60.

Avatar image for gruoch1

@Alex00x: Yeah, it's exactly like that one psn/xbox arcade game that was $20, you know the one. right?

Avatar image for toffifee

*giggles* So now the updates will no longer be free? Oh Sean, you rascal.

Avatar image for cherub1000

@toffifee: I know right, can't say I'm surprised but pretty naff spinning round and saying that all of a sudden. Still I'm enjoying the game, the almost constant crashes, not so much

Avatar image for gruoch1

@toffifee: Yeah, he's going to try his best to make as many updates free as he can, but admitted it was a mistake to say all updates would be free, because that might not be realistic... That son of a B*tch!

Avatar image for kalgert

@gruoch1: It is actually a bit of an insane thing to say, if you think about everything behind the game.

Here we have a videogame that is basically a survival game at it's bare bones, with some planet hopping, sold at full price when it feels like a game should be half that price, and STILL they would want to give us stuff that would cost money for the game. I thought the 60 Euros price tag would be enough to cover any future expenses. I guess not.

Avatar image for xantufrog

Hm, well it appears the PC patch incorporated the mouse smoothing they mentioned for the experimental patch. I'm assuming this IS the experimental patch (with all the experimental patch's notes). One thing I can confirm the patch does, that was not in the experimental patch's notes: antialiasing settings on PC are now fixed

Personally I've had almost no bugs with mine - no idea what is different about my setup or experience from those who are having issues. In ~20 hours of play it crashed once. The only other bugs I've encountered was sometimes my takeoff from planet surface launches me really high into the atmosphere instead of just a few feet up, and I once found a tablet that wouldn't let me interact with it. Lastly, the AA settings didn't do anything before, and you have to use X on the Galactic Map to scan, not Tab (actually this may have been fixed as well - I didn't check this evening)

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

I understand asking for money from substantial content updates generally, but this game wasn't worth $60 to begin with. There's the problem.

Avatar image for gruoch1

@groowagon: No problem, just your opinion.

Avatar image for Daelusca

@gruoch1: when the majority of people hold an opinion, it is then called 'consensus'.....big concept, I know :)

Avatar image for gruoch1

@Daelusca: Except it's not the majority, it's not even close. It's a very, very vocal minority with too much free time.

Avatar image for heqteur

@Daelusca: it's not a concenvus when you say the majority of people agrees. A few people is also not the majority. You saying it's so doesn't have any impact on the actual reality. Get over yourself.

Avatar image for Ohaidere

I like this game, but Sean Murray already seemed a bit shady, and the no patch notes thing fits that narrative. Dude is going to spend years building his integrity back, and a patch that obviously omits patch notes is a bad start.

Avatar image for kryllic

Am I crazy or stupid that I'm really upset that there's no multiplayer? I've been hearing from my friends and family how "it was never meant to be multiplayer", or "Murray never confirmed multiplayer, so you shouldn't have expected it", and all this kind of stuff. But, whenever I try to bring up all the interviews and points where Murray *clearly* states "you can play with friends and run into other players", they always come back with "well, you shouldn't always listen to what they say, things change". Like, I feel like I'm going I going crazy?

Avatar image for gruoch1

@kryllic: Almost all the interviews I remember Murray said things like "don't expect to be flying along with your friends" and "The odds of you running into another person are almost 0." However, he also said "unlikely, but not impossible." So, it's understandable to be upset that it would seem to be actually impossible to run into another player. That aside, it did seem like through-out development he made it pretty clear this game was designed to be played alone.

Avatar image for kryllic

@gruoch1: I understand the whole "the odds of finding someone is slim", which is honestly fine with me. But I still don't understand why he talked so much about multiplayer, and then ripped it just before release. The whole point with it "feeling like singleplayer" was really cool, up until you ran into another player, then suddenly, it's co-op. That concept I really liked and looked forward to, almost like a journey of finding others. But now it IS a 0 chance of running into someone; Murray made sure of that :\

Avatar image for nickiamx

@kryllic: Me and many others agree with you. I've been following the game for a year, many others since 2013. Since late 2013 he baited us with Multiplayer talk, video with a lot of content that isn't in the game. I was having fun with the game actually, but I don't want to support a liar and got my refund before my refund time was up. Its a shame

Avatar image for kryllic

@nickiamx: Glad to hear it's not just me. And I've been enjoying the game as well, up until recently when I finished the Atlas Path, now I feel there's really nothing to do. Would've been nice to run into someone and explore the galaxy with them
