No Man's Sky Delayed - Report

You'll have to wait a while longer to play the PS4 and PC space game, apparently.

[Update] TechRadar has said "two independent sources" have also verified the delay. They did not, however, confirm the extent of the delay.

No Man's Sky now won't come out until July or August at the earliest, according to the report.

No Caption Provided

"A second source, who works at GameStop, said they received marketing materials today for No Man's Sky with the original June 21 release date. However, stores were informed that the release date is no longer correct and that they should cover it up with a 'Coming Soon' label."

You can see an image of this message here at Kotaku. Neither Sony nor Hello Games responded to Kotaku's request for comment.

Officially, No Man's Sky is due out for PS4 and PC on June 21 in North America, June 22 in Europe, and June 24 in the UK. We'll update this post as new information becomes available.

In April, Hello Games boss Sean Murray talked about why No Man's Sky was almost canceled and shared a story about snubbing Kanye West (sort of).

Update: On May 27, Hello Games confirmed that No Man's Sky is delayed; it's now coming in August.

Well that settles it for me. Cancelling my preorder and buying Elite Dangerous: Horizons instead. If they can't keep their word and release the game when they said they would, then I won't keep my word and assure them of a purchase.

I've been really enjoying Elite Dangerous anyway.

@deviltaz35:That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Nobody gets a red cent until the order is processed, and the order isn't processed until a maximum of 10 days before the item is ready to be shipped, and then only if it's guaranteed to be shipped within that 10-day time frame. Pre-orders are only useful to the shop that you pre-ordered from so they have an idea of the demand the game will have day 1. If you have a problem with pre-ordering games, then just wait for the reviews like a large portion of the gaming community does already.

@sirdante77: lol fair enough however you really believe preordering is used to determine demand? Preordering is ruining the games industry because it is leading to mostly buggy titles that then take weeks to be properly fixed. Not saying that will happen in this case but it's interesting why it was delayed at the 11th hour. Devs know console games can just as easily be patched now as PC games which is why we receive such shoddy games. If people stopped this preordering nonsense it would lead to higher quality titles and far less fixup patches.

To wait for biased reviews hardly helps any situation anyway. The game is backed by Sony , they would pay a crap load to ensure this gets a positive review whether it is good or not. I am not saying it's a bad game but reviews won't tell the whole story at least not the ones that are first cab off the rank.

If it is true then it is pathetic they left it this long to tell people. I hope everyone cancels the preorder for being stuffed around. Glad i didn't cave just to get some silly ship as a bonus.

@reanor2:Just tired of people like you with the entitled attitude. Companies are in a business to make money, and personally I'm happy they have the integrity to delay the game so they can deliver a polished final product. Or would you rather them just release it on time and send you patches once a week for the next year? I can't really tell what you want, because in the same comment you bashed them for both rushing AND delaying release dates, AND for wanting to get paid for their work. How dare they!?!?

@deviltaz35: Except every pre-order I've ever done they do not get any money until the product ships so there goes that theory down the tubes.

@reanor2: Another module due for that shortly too isn't there? That is the only bummer with that game that it is broken into modules. I wish they would just sell it as a complete game when it's finished.

@dexda: because I played ED, and I saw multiple NMS presentations and videos. ED used procedural generation to create their 4 billion stars, and the game was as boring as heck. It still is, even now, with landing on gasless planets and satellites, factions and upcoming Engineers expac. NMS on release, while it will have thousands more planets, it will have less stuff to do. Their selling point, is that their PD is able to generate trillions of planets... Which means nothing, if there are no gamplay mechanics to accommodate your interest on those planets. Every planet will have the same content - factions, cracting resources and some pew pew. While resources and factions are "different", there will be nothing different as far as gameplay goes. You go to one planet - collect resources, interact with some faction NPCs, craft something. Then you go to another planet, you'll collect resources, interact with some faction NPCs, craft something... Should I continue?

What makes me frustrated the most, that they try to portray this game as a AAA title and charge 60$, using a selling point of how many planets they have and sandbox gameplay. Game supposed to have a lot more gameplay mechanics to qualify as AAA title...

They need to work on this game for at least another year to add more gameplay mechanics and polish them. Going from planet to planet doing same three things, will get boring really fast, either the animals on the planet are red or blue...

@reanor2: Seeing is NOTHING like playing. I've only SEEN both of them and for all I know ED might be all flash and no substance.

I've heard from several places that ED is straight boring.

No Man's Sky might fall flat on its face but any rational person will be waiting to actually PLAY the game before making judgement on it. At the very LEAST waiting to see a range of reviews for it.

If it is a $10 game being sold for full price then the reviews will most likely show that. If not the many Let's Plays on Youtube will. In which case we can all NOT buy it.

I'd rather wait another year, than play a game where you can only name planets and animals and do some occasional crafting. Procedural Genration is great, but it can only generate games assets, which means very repetitive and bland content. They need to spend probably another year expanding their asset libraries, adding missions, more factions, relationships between factions, complexity into crafting etc etc. all they did these few years, they were working on getting their PG and building asset library. I hope in the end, they will not charge full AAA price, because this game is more of an indie than a fully blown out AAA game. I mean do really people today have such a low demands for games, that small dev team can make an indie game, advertise it as AAA on gaming sites and in the end charge 60$ for a game where you can pretty much do only three things - explore, craft and fly a space ship...

A little disappointed, but, not entirely surprised, I was honestly more surprised they were getting it out this early even after their studio flooded last year. But, I think that'll be okay, it will give me time to finish Doom, play though Far Harbor and play Warhammer to fill in time, hopefully the delay is to give us the best experience possible. I just hope it doesn't start to go down the road of development hell.

Side note: I am glad I haven't pre-ordered this, I would probably be a bit more ticked off if I had.

@reanor2:

Translation: Publisher CO: I want to get paid for doing my job. Are we going to make enough money to pay ourselves if we keep to the current plan?

Publisher rep 2: I want to get paid for doing my job too. No, the game's not ready yet. We need to back it off and fix a few things, and maybe we'll make a little more money if the idiots on the gaming websites don't rag on us too much. We saved quite a bit doing the smart thing and using E3, hype, and some gaming websites to promote our game but we're still cutting it close.

Publisher CO: Good call on that one. I wanted to make some flashy million-dollar ads to show on TV, but these greedy little jerks will complain about us charging $60 for a game because we're an Indie company, whether or not we've spent 3 years of our lives making (twice!) for them to enjoy until their console craps out and they upgrade to the PS4.5. So how long until we're ready?

Publisher rep 1: Why is rep 2 talking before me???? I want to make money doing my job too!! We still have a few bugs to fix in this massive algorithm, and we're already backordered on the special editions so we'll need some extra time to manufacture more of those. Maybe a couple months? Surely our consumer-base will be mature enough to handle that, it's not like games don't get delayed all the time.

Publisher CO: LOLOLOL have you met our consumer-base??? You're taking the heat on this one for that comment, rep 1. Tell the stores to change it to "Coming Soon" and maybe the reddit will keep the trash talk to a minimum so we'll make enough to fix the water damage in our shop, so we can get to work on another industry-changing idea these kids can scoff at.

Publisher CO: "how much money we've made from preorders and on hype, since the release announcement?"

Publisher rep 2: "not enough to cover the ad costs"

Publisher CO: "what ad costs, WHO told you to run ads?!"

Publisher rep 1: "oh we didn't run any special ads, just some junk stuff on gaming websites"

Publisher CO: "ok, get all the stores change the release day to "coming soon", and have the devs stall for a while. This should generate extra anticipation and hype. Then release official statement that we want the game to be as good as we planned it to be and blah blah, keep it under wraps. We'll have to wrap it up soon, and have the devs push out an unfinished game. Tell them we have quadrillionth of planets, they should bite."
