No Man's Sky Big 1.3 Update Adds New Multiplayer Support And Much More; Here's The Patch Notes

Lots of cool stuff is coming to No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky might have been out for over a year, but developer Hello Games is still supporting it in a big way. A huge new update, dubbed Atlas Rises, is coming to PS4 and PC today, adding "joint exploration," a "graphical overhaul", and 30 hours of new story content.

Multiplayer was a much-requested feature after No Man's Sky launched in 2016, and finally you can play with other humans--sort of. You'll be able to see, communicate, and "explore the universe" with up to 16 other players, but they'll be represented simply by glowing orbs, and Hello Games admits that "interaction with others is currently very limited." It sounds like the developer is planning on taking this further, however, as it calls the move "an important first step into the world of synchronous co-op in No Man's Sky."

The company also says the 1.3 update introduces 30 hours of new story content. Included in this is a new quest system and a branching narrative, along with "double the lore and interactions of the existing game." New NPC guilds have also been introduced, while the economic, trading, and crafting systems have been expanded.

You can now edit the terrain of the world around you, meanwhile, using a new item called the Multi-Tool. This allows you to sculpt landscapes as you see fit, to help customize and enhance your base. In addition, the diversity and visual quality of planets have been improved, and ancient portals allow you to revisit previous worlds. Finally, space combat and low flight have received a bunch of small enhancements, and there are now more ships available to buy.

You can read all the details here, or check out the patch notes at the bottom of this article. Previous No Man's Sky updates have also been substantial, adding features like base-building and land vehicles.

Hello Games founder Sean Murray said earlier this week that it had been "an exciting, intense, and emotional year for us at Hello Games." He added: "We have been quiet, but we have been listening intently. We've spent that year working hard on free updates for this game our team cares about so much."

have they included free look in cockpit view yet and an option to look around the cockpit using Keyboard and mouse? and do the CAVES look varied and random and different from one another, so its not like looking at the SAME caves every single planet. Is there other NPC's doing stuff on the planet, mining? So im not the ONLY person in the whole universe that mines for resources.

I'm liking the update so far, but it did lead to some head scratching moments...

First off, my base lost all my ladders leading to my second floor. Odd, but a fairly quick replacement.

Second, my lush, green home world now has cacti everywhere. Global warming? Gore, have you gotten a hold of my planet?!

So, having never played NMS do you think I would have a much better experience entering this latest version with a non-biased opinion? Or maybe wait longer for more patches? Is everyones original gripes still relavant? Because tbh the game sounds ok!

@hammer-throw: The game is a lot of fun. It's mostly a chill exploration and crafting game, The added story gives it more structure and makes it feel more goal oriented which I think helps the early hours a lot. Totally worth a buy if it sounds like your kind of thing.

Multiplayer? How are bubbles that can't play with you multiPLAYer? Multi-person-aware would be a more fair statement. Then again NMS is built off of misleading, unfairly unrepresentative statements. Just sad to see gaming journalists adding to the hole.

I really hate to say this guys, but... uhhmmm.. I've actually dusted off my copy of No Man Sky and had another go at it

And enjoying the hell out of the game with this 3rd update deployed

(I'm on Survival mode btw, as I love pain and games like Dark Souls are my all time favorite)

ANYWAYS ....what they've done over the last year, and with this patch of course, is pretty impressive and looks to me they've managed to patch the game close to 90% to what Sean's original vision was - you know, all the lies he made etc that got everyone upset and up in arms wielding torches/pitchforks ready to burn down the Hello castle

But, yeah... they're making good on their promises... and I AM BACK ON BOARD B1TCH3SSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO, multiplayer isn't a fully fledged thing yet, but from their track record so far, I'm for the long haul and look forward to the next update :)

Yours sincerely,
A former NMS hater/faceless internet troll

I came to the comment section just to see all the pointless and factless hate posting on this game by this time. Glad to see thats not the case. The dev team is still very hard at work on the game. They should totally be given a chance. And respect for that. So many games now a days just get some ovet priced pay for dlc with 15mins of content. And thats it. Good to see this. So a little faith restored on the general social structures of modern gamers

So they're finally adding early-alpha stages of the stuff they promised would be in at launch? Cool. Maybe just one or two more years and the game will be out of Early Access stage. Might take a look at it then.

I am interested to check out what this update adds; but it seems completely obvious, this game is an Early Access Title.

This game is awesome. Amazon PS4 sales up 6000%. Currently the #1 bestseller on Steam.

XcrapBox fan boys on suicide watch. Don't worry, Xbots. You can always take out your frustrations by exchanging obscenities with a 9-year-old kid when you play Call of Doody this weekend. LMAO!!!!

Great job, Hello Games!

@mikecrci: Oh damn, wish I had that game that went from being terrible to now being pretty bad one year later.

FYI it's been proven that most Xbox gamers are adults with full time jobs and kids. Doody is now a PS4 thing.

Not sure if you're trolling, but I thought I'd bite.

@mikecrci: "XcrapBox fan boys"

Actually, most of the irrational hate against NMS seems to come from PS4 and PC players who bought and played it.

@Spartan_418: It's not really irrational if 60% of the features the company clearly stated to be in are... well... not in.

@eskchan19 : Some of the criticism is justified, yes, but if it's a statement to the effect of "it was a mess at launch, so no one should give it a second chance and the dev shouldn't even try to improve it", then I'd call it irrational.

@Spartan_418: No most contrary. Patching the game and delivering at least half of what they promised with their giant plappering mouths is the very least they owe every single person they ripped of, ahem i mean they got to buy the game. And they know that. If they want to have any chance ever again on the video game market they need to deliver and fix the game up. If they don't, then people will forever remember that the only thing they ever contributed to the history of video games was the biggest lies ever, at least untill Star Citiziens uninevitable failure.

I do agree that second chances should be given. And they HAVE to improve this game. But they still have a long, long, LONG way to go before anyone should even bother with a second look. Untill at least half their broken promises have been fixed there is simply no use to it. And when they finally do, yeah then one can think about picking it up for 10 bucks or so.

@Bamda: Well they are a new company and their only released game so far has been the most catastrophic failure of the last decade, solely because their boss was wholehandedly handing out promises they couldn't keep in the end. They have to try if they want any future in that business.

The ships control incredibly well now and the planets look better than ever, but the game is also running a lot worse for me. It never ran well but it was at least playable. Now after playing for a few minutes it starts having such major stuttering issues that I can't play it.

Post release support done right. That doesn't excuse the state of it at launch but it's certainly beginning to atone for it.

@Dirty_Window: to be fair it had a very small dev team, and had a flood wipe out allot of their work late in development. Good job sony for pushing that announced release date anyway. 1 of those, what could of been moments.

holy shit, that's awsome, game just getting better and better. Makes me Think about returning. I liked the game at release, even though it sometimes felt dead some planets had no Life, worst part was after the loooong ride through the first galaxy, realizing that there aint anything in the center made me uninstall. If they keep improving the game for free, it's gonna be really good.

@ember_to_flame: You should get back to playing it. Flying around on planets is a lot more fun, and you can control the ship better. It seems as if you can stop and hover on planets now. Not sure if it's hovering or the ship is moving EXTREMELY slow, feels like hovering though. I've found I don't get bored quickly because there is always something to do with the new quests, and planets seem to have more stuff to explore. Found my first crashed freighter which was awesome, and lucrative. Scattered about this freighter were buried crates with lots of money or nanites inside. I played for a couple of hours. Had to stop, but I wanted to play more. (Wife needed the tv for her work out).

@scatterbrain007: Yeah, probably will, I like exploring. And I like the game sound, still use NMS background theme, best system sound. I Think I played around 100 hours when it was new, I just hoped there was a bit more to see.(mostly evil crabs on my planets xD and semi dead seas). Would've been better if the animals on the planet were scattered all over and did not walk/swim in packs.
