No Half-Life 2: Episode 3 until 2011?

Game Informer's rumor column claims the long-awaited final installment of Valve's iconic series won't arrive until next year--if it arrives at all.

Source: The Loose Talk rumor section of Game Informer's February issue.

What we heard: Last fall, Half-Life series hero Gordon Freeman was voted Greatest Game Hero by GameSpot's users, despite not having been in a new game in two years. The last title to feature the crowbar-wielding physicist was 2007's The Orange Box, which featured Half-Life 2: Episode Two and its two immediate forbearers: 2006's Half-Life 2: Episode One and 2004's Half-Life 2. (The package also included Team Fortress 2 and the award-wining Portal.)

The hunt for clues about Half-Life 2: Episode Three's fate goes on…
The hunt for clues about Half-Life 2: Episode Three's fate goes on…

Initially, Half-Life 2's episodes were supposed to allow the developer to release a new expansion every several months. It began in June 2006 with Episode One (initially subtitled "Aftermath") and was to end "by Christmas 2007" with Episode Three. However, that scheme was derailed when Valve struck a deal with Electronic Arts to distribute the Orange Box. That compilation arrived in October 2007, and since then, Valve has remained mum on the subject of Episode Three, instead focusing on its wildly popular Left 4 Dead series.

With nary a peep about Episode Three in 2008 or 2009, many were hoping at least some new information about its release--or fate--would arrive this year. Don't count on it, says Game Informer, which claims to have knowledge that the game won't arrive until 2011--at the earliest. "There won't be any game from the franchise in 2010," the GameStop-owned magazine declared, before raising the possibility of the Half-Life 2 series skipping directly to Half-Life 3 in "a few years."

The official story: As of press time, Valve's notoriously recalcitrant PR department had not responded to requests for an update on Episode Three's status.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Episode Three isn't coming out in 2010. With Half-Life 2: Episode Two already showing its age in 2007, it's likely that Valve wants to take the time to ensure the next Half-Life title is graphically competitive. Given the visual caliber of today's first-person shooters, that may require a true sequel with all-new technology.

I have never played a single Half-Life game so I'm not sure what the big deal is. I will say this though the point of an episode is to stick to a solid release schedule. Oh well what would you guys prefer Half-Life 2 ep 3 or Half-Life 3?

Delays are a slippery slope... you delay the game a little, some other game comes along and raises the bar. Then you have to delay your game even more to make the graphics better. I'd be keen to see what valve will do with the next source engine though; I can't really think of much that is left to do post Cryengine 2

Does Valve even know what an EPISODE is? Someone should tell them. This is preposterous, then at least call it HL 3, that way it would at least make more sense.

Ok valve. Let me get this straight. You want to sell games right? That isnt a crime right? What a crime is, is that you have deals with companies that only want to make games for a certain group of people (EA works with microsoft and microsoft is telling EA to get all cool pc games on the xbox) and with that thought, Microsoft and EA are really f***ing valve up. I mean, ive bought a ps3 and im damn proud of it. So i hoped l4d2 would come out for ps3. No. Cuz the damn microsoft company has bought valve out so they'd not bring it out on ps3. and it pisses me off. So i bought l4d2 for pc. But whats the most stupid is is that i want to play hl2,maybe hl3 if it comes out. And im scared that if they bring it out for console, they make it a xbox only one so they can really piss off ps3 owners. Bottom line, Microsoft is really messing the console market up, because they put they're logo on every PC game on xbox. and make it a 360 only. So i hate that. And i hate EA for claiming that l4d2 is theirs all the time, without crediting VALVe for ALL THE AWESOME STUFF THAT THEY MAKE FOR THE REST OF THEIR COMPANY LIFE. VALVe thanks for making such good games. Microsoft thanks for f***ing up the Gaming industry for ps3 and pc. EA thanks to you for claiming the awesome work of VALVe that its yours. Period. P.S i didnt write this while i was in a rage :P

As long as they revamp the gun play I am willing to wait. As much as I loved the story in HL I find the auto aim huge hit box shooting boring. I don't think they need iron sights exactly, but something needs to be done.

I've love it if Valve launched the next source engine and used Half-Life 2: Episode 3 as the first game to showcase it.

I hope to god that they decide to release it on the PS3- Valve seems to hate Sony now. (In a business sense, mind you.)

i can wait. i have had the orange box for 2 years now, and still playing it, i finished half life 2 last year, and took me like 3 months to finish episode 1. i havent played episode 2 since october, so i am kinda hesitant because i do not want the ride to end! and am i the only one who remembered when gamespot or some other site revealed that the valve guys said the episodes were essentially half life 3 split up into 3 episodes. they said something like half life was its own game, half like 2 was its own game, we decided to split up half life 3 into episodes, and we will let you know when episode 3 is done?

Funnily enough this reminds me back in the day (2000) when we were all killing ourselves over the release of Doom 3 and Half Life 2. With Doom 4 in "development" as well as Half Life 3(???) (If you can call it development, its more like frying our brains with facts/fictions for the next 10 years over these two titles!!!) Seems we might just be feeling the same tension all over again; and THATS exactly what this market needs!

Half-Life 2 is still the best, so while I wish Episode Three would hurry up and release, I'm glad it's taking a bit longer. It's going to be even more epic!

From the opening tram ride sequence of Half-Life to the launching of the rocket in Episode 2, imo without a doubt the best FP story based shooter ever. Although frustrated at the 'Romoured' delay, i am now quite happy to wait, at the end of the day, it'll be worth it.

I never really got into half-life. I'm a console-only gamer and by the time it got to the Xbox with the Orange box, I just wasn't feelin' it. Maybe I was expecting it to be something more instead of just taking it for what it was. And by that time the graf-x weren't the best, making it that much harder to get into a new game.

I don't think Half-life would be overshadowed - even if it was using Source. The previous episodes were still rather dated in terms of graphics, yet it was still acclaimed. TF2 scoffed in the face of all of the "realism" that FPSes are trying to (and failing to, in many cases) achieve. L4D 2 was raged at by angry people calling Valve "sell outs", yet ironically they all played it anyway. Even more ironic the game got excellent reviews. Heh. Anyway, to everyone complaining about how short it's going to be you must realize that you wait that long for FPSes that are just as short anyway. Regardless, unless Half-life is the only game you play you're going to be playing other games in that time anyway - so why the hate? You're acting as if Valve MUST release Episode 3 as if they OWE it to you. Like I said before, this isn't Infinity Ward.

A cool idea would be preparing Episode III using Episode II standards and then giving it as an extra/prelude to a brand new, cutting-edge Half-Life 3.. You can't really blame them for not having enough time to cover all bases right now. Left 4 dead is definitely the rage of the moment, but at least it's safe to assume that Half-Life won't be left behind. It's one of those situations when you have a very solid and personal favorite project; you do some new ones and then, when the time is right, you put all your ideas and forces together to come back and kick some tail by evolving your old favorite one..

Even though, the game is not coming out soon. IT is good hearing some information about it though. Valve has been too quiet. I beileve that they are just going to skip HL2E3 and bounce to HL3.

Hmmm, not really sure about what's stated in the last part of the article about graphics etc. Left for dead is hardly amazing graphics, and it's still a massive seller.. Although I have to say, half life ep:3 would be amazing if it was built on a new source code which matched todays standard of graphics engines :)
