No Fallout 4 Demo and Here's Why

The full game arrives in just two weeks.

Bethesda will not offer a demo version of its upcoming RPG Fallout 4, the developer has confirmed. Writing on Twitter, marketing executive Pete Hines explained why that won't happen. "No demo," he said to a fan who asked about it. "Not possible to cut up the game into a small piece."

No Caption Provided

Gamers on the fence about buying Fallout 4, then, may want to wait to read reviews or see more gameplay. Demos for sprawling, AAA games aren't uncharted territory, however, as a free demo version of Bungie's shooter Destiny is currently available to try on consoles.

Fallout 4 launches on November 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The post-apocalyptic game recently went gold, while its trophies/achievements have emerged. On top of that, Microsoft has said it is confident that Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4--which launch on the same day--can both enjoy success.

I just want to see if my set up can handle it better than my PS4. They should do like a free Steam weekend at least. I'm eventually buying it on something.

Big AAA titles usually don't have demos, only games I see anymore that do are indie titles, and even all of those don't have demos.

While a demo would be cool, I don't really mind their decision to not release one. We've left the age of demos for the most part (though I would still love to see them on a regular basis), so I don't believe their decision will really upset many people.

Honestly, demos work only on action games or other games with simple compelling gameplay. Fallout is too deep for that.

@santinegrete: While I respect your opinion and see exactly where you are coming from, a demo can also be used to showcase game mechanics, create intrigue by teasing the player with a story, and allow the player to understand what the general experience will be like for the length of the game. You could create a good demo for any genre of game, I believe that it just comes down to time constraint, money, and consumer demand.

Fall out doesn't need a demo. Seriously if they just made fall out 3 with better graphics and a little bit updated gameplay it would be amazing. Fall out is in a class of it's own even if it has more bugs than a crack house!

Of course there is no demo. They don't want people to notice how buggy this game is just like any other Bethesda game so people don't cancel preorders. Smart move Bethesda.

I do very much miss demos but anyone on the fence can just Redbox this I'm sure after trying it for awhile you will get a idea of whether it's your thing or not. I took a chance on Fallout 3 having never played a Fallout game before and only having Bethesda's past track record with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to go on and it worked out perfect for me as I loved Fallout 3.

It's Fallout, they don't really need one. Until they release a game that's a steaming pile, then people will expect the game will be great.

Who was actually expecting them to do it anyway? It has been years since I stopped even wishing there were still demos because I know that it is never going to happen.

@accesdenied: Piracy from where I'm from is mosly done by actual pirates who resell the game, and kids who don't have the money to get every good game there is.

@accesdenied: piracy is mostly on pc and on pc you could just buy the game on steam then ask refund if you arent satisfied within 2 hour of gameplay thats just as good as a demo, so no excuse for piracy if they dont make a demo really.

Well i'm not picking on Bethesda necessarily, but i think these Gaming Companies are learning, the more people play Demo's, the more unlikely they are to purchase the game.

Generally, quality does not to seem to get better, and too often, even worse. I can't tell you how many Demos i played, that i feel saved me alot of money. Betas save me money, more than it cost me for the full game.

EA Access so far, in just 3 months of 15 dollars, saved me TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS in Sports games, that i do not feel warrant a 60 dollar price tag as compared to prior years.

At the same time, i'm sticking with NBA 2K 15 (that i bought used for 9 bucks), and being there's no Demo to show me if there's enough changes to warrant 60 dollars for 16, i'm not purchasing it. The Rainbow Six and Star Wars Betas's, i've made a decision not to purchase those.

At the same time, i never played Fallout, and maybe if they offered a Demo, it can get me into something new. Playing the F1 2012 Demo, got me into the F1 Series. The Spec Ops the Line Demo got me to purchase that, as well as countless other games i never would have thought of buying.

Quite frankly, if the Producer is proud of their game, and are convinced their quality will sell, they'll put out a Demo. If not, they don't.

I can count on my two hands the amount of Demo's on Xbox One, and i can see the reason why. 360 has cut down on the amount of Demo's they have in their library, probably afraid people will opt for the older, cheaper games, rather than new ones buying blind (or worse yet, not upgrading and blowing 400 bucks for a system that isn't that much better).

At the same time, Sony on PS3 have been wanting to sell their PS Plus Service (so, no Demo if they can charge money), and now mandate it on PS4, in so you still get screwed, having to pay for a game you may not want.

It's a huge power grab, to have companies sell less than par games in my view, and with You Tube found to be "rigged" of sorts, by people paid to Review games positively, they really are counting on the fact people are stupid lol.

Sorry for the Rant, but in this day and age, i've been burnt too many times, and these New Generation of games all end up bombing out. No Demo, No Sale. I just don't have the time or money to waste anymore.

@jagdedge124: I agree with you brotha, (A long post, btw) Im hesitant about a lot of games now a days. Also I have to pay for my own games. An 8hr shift to dish out 60 bucks for a game that was not what I expected is heart breaking. Demos have save me money too! And your logic makes sense companies rather have you buy the game despite if you like it or not.

@accesdenied:

Right, i mean it's a total different thing say on 360 or PS3, when you can buy used or even new games for 5 bucks a piece, or these Free Games they throw you etc. But for 60 dollars a piece, going in blind, knowing what's been going on, is a bit too steep, and too risky.

Over in the UK, i think they passed a Law in that people can get their money back for the games they purchase, if that's what they wish (not these "store credits" or other nonsense).

If they did that here in the States, i think it would take out less of the sting, but even better, produce better quality games for the money, knowing you'll get your money back if unsatisfied.

I don't think it's my mind being narrow. I think it's the Gaming Industry of late, and the mindless drone fanboys that continue to pee down our leg and telling us it's raining, when in fact the games are just not very good, and we've seen many examples of that of late.

Besheda did any bad game? Far i remember they didn't lol. In this ones you can trust i guess. They won game of year several times in a row. I doubt fallout 4 will be bad or something. I dotn get why people complain and whine about everything... Its normal they dont make demos this days for get the most pre orders they can... Its quiet normal, i dont see where is the surprise in all this!

I didn't play Destiny, but I assume there's a good deal of instanced content that would actually be suitable for a demo. Fallout 4 is a huge open world with interconnected quest-lines, stories, characters and it's all cohesive. They would have to carve/patchwork up part of the existing world to make a demo, or just make something entirely separate.

I think saying it's impossible is a bit of a dramatization, but I definitely can't imagine it being worth the effort.

Ofc there will be no demo, the whole marketing idea of preorders work around the fact that people buy a product before they know what they are buying. Once people have read reviews or have friends who have played the game tell them if the game is worth is salt or not its out of the developers hands, they have no real way of improving their sales other than being seen in regular advertising.

But before the game is released they can control the flow of information, showing the good and hiding the bad. A demo version will also decrease the numbers of "uninformed buyers" that they have for the game, and will to a very small degree give them new customers.
---
Not surprising that the illegal alternative to demos are so widespread.

@mjc0961: Gotta agree with Jao on this one. Almost always priated just to check if it works. Although, I didn't know about the steam refund. But still. As long as he's not reselling or constantly pirating and playing games without buying em. To this day, I wish every game had a small demo jsut to test the technical specs for PC. I'm mainly playing ps4 now though, so I don't mind as much.

It seems generally that offering a demo is a thing more common in the past, and getting less and less common. I'm not bothered by it, personally. Reviews and game coverage in forms on videos on YouTube kind of replaced all that.

In many interviews they've touted improved combat and the ability to fully enjoy the third-person experience. So, I'm definitely for the demo. It's necessary for third-person users since it's very unclear as to whether or not they put as much care and development into the 3rd gameplay as they did their precious FPS (I doubt it personally, but that's why I would like a demo). People would want to see in advance if the third-person gameplay is crappy and disregarded. Like many of you said, FP users wouldn't need it, though, as they pretty much know they're getting a core FP game with improved FPS mechanics.

Not sure it would make sense taking a way development time to make a demo for marketing purposes on a game that already has a large fan base, compared with a game like Destiny, that is an original IP.
