"No Downside" To Red Dead Redemption 2 On PC, Take-Two CEO Says

"No downside."

Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC--officially. After a long period in which Rockstar and Take-Two played coy, the game has been confirmed for both the platform and Stadia in November, with a Steam release to follow in in December. While exciting, this seemed inevitable given past comments, despite the fact that Red Dead Redemption never made it to PC. You can see what Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said on the subject earlier this year below.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is rumored to, at some point down the road, release on PC. Nothing is confirmed currently. Developer Rockstar Games has made no announcements, and neither has parent company Take-Two. Despite that, evidence continues to mount for the acclaimed western releasing on PC.

Speaking at an investor briefing this week in New York City, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick responded to the assertion that launching Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC would be a "layup." That's a basketball metaphor for something very easy to do.

Zelnick succinctly responded, "There is no downside to releasing the game on PC."

That's all he had to say on the subject. His response is interesting and noteworthy, however. Zelnick is asked regularly about bringing Red Dead Redemption 2 to PC, and up until now, his public response had been that he would let Rockstar speak for itself. Zelnick is confirming nothing with his new statement, but it is a notable change of form for the executive.

Looking at Rockstar's history, it seems likely that Red Dead Redemption 2 may eventually release on PC. Rockstar's previous release, Grand Theft Auto V, came to PC in April 2015, which was five months after the release of GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One and 18 months after GTA V originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.

For Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar and Sony had an exclusivity deal for some content, though whether or not this impacts the game launching on other platforms, like PC, is unknown. For what it's worth, 2010's original Red Dead Redemption never came to PC.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped more than 24 million copies, which makes it one of the most commercially successful games in history. Launching on PC would only further increase the sales number, which is probably what Zelnick is referring to when he says "there is no downside" to bringing the game to PC.

Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode, Red Dead Online, recently left beta with a huge update. Rockstar continues to support the online mode, and lots more content is coming over time.

Rockstar isn't announced as an attendee for E3 2019, but Take-Two will be at the show where it will go big on hyping Borderlands 3 from Gearbox Software.

"No downside"

I think that's the exact same sales pitch the car salesman gave me as I signed the 6 year contract on my new Alfa Romeo, that broke down on the way home.

Yeah, I'll be pirating it. Because FREE is what it will be worth by the time it comes to PC.

Thanks asshole publisher for thinking I would buy this game twice at full price. Not going to happen.

There was ZERO reason not to release on PC at LAUNCH, other than the greed thinking of people getting it on console first, then on PC later. Screw you take two. No downside? Yeah no shit, double sales isn't a downside at all, so of course.

I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. Still no PC release. You think I am going to reward you and pay full price for an old game when you finally grace me with the privilege of playing a game I already know the entire story to? It's a big game, impossible to avoid information about it. Now the surprises are gone.

So I am so glad you see no downside in someday treating PC players to your old game, but frankly, too little, far too late. Piss off Take Two, and you can take Rockstar with you. You won't be getting my money again.

@Schizycho: what a Whitney little bitch. Just buy it on console. I always have all the consoles and a gaming PC so I guess I don’t have these petty problems. ??‍♂️

@KahnArtizt: I also have both PS4 and Xbox One. That's not the point, and, "just buy it on console," isn't always the solution, and it is quite beside the point.

I don't want it on console, at 1/2 the fps, at 1/2 the graphic fidelity, and with far less graphic tuning options. I didn't spend thousands of dollars on a high end PC rig to let it sit in the corner gathering dust.

Also, if you are going to call me a whiney little bitch, be a man and do it to my face. You're a real brave guy to posture up and throw demeaning insults over the internet anonymously, you little bitch.

Didn't people ask if it was coming to PC? They said it wouldn't, right? So... the downside is that they'd be liars

Oh this is Rockstar, that's par for the course

Great game or not I'm not taking their scraps. I should not have to wait to play on PC yielding to strong arm tactics from consoles to release the games on console first. It's not a popular opinion but it is mine.

i spent 450 hrs on this game, doing every little thing and every achievement. everything about it was breathtaking, I'm guessing they've done it this way so they can remake the first game in the same engine, and release that too so pc players get that. thats billions in the bag right there. who wouldn't buy a remastered original.

the physics in that engine were so good, completely out of character for a rockstar game. it did feel a bit over tuned, but tbh if you want to challenge gamers and force them to think in that mindset, like IRL where a mistake would harm you, then the tuning is about right.

Yeah, they've probably sold all the console copies they are going to and a next-gen system is on the horizon. Time to port it over to PC.

Can't wait to mod this game.

@eli150: What does having a 1080p TV have to do with the game's framerate?

""No Downside" To Releasing Red Dead Redemption 2 On PC"

If it was done on initial release on ALL platforms.

Being an exclusive PC Gamer, this was another one that left a bad taste in my mouth and how Gamespot and others kept pushing how wonderful the game was,but never pointed out that everyone could not enjoy it and never took that into account when naming RDR2 "Game of the Year".No this is just a search for more monies after the initial hoopla died down.

So,,,,," No money for you!!!",,,Rockstar,,I hope that exclusive deal worked out for you.I will never patronize any of your titles knowing the shading business deals you practice.

Same goes for you Hideo Kojima,my Benjamins are going towards games released for PCs and other platform at the same time.

@homerpyle: Why should the fact that RDR2 is not on PC have anything to do with it getting GoTY? What platform a game is or isn't on should have nothing to do with being considered for GoTY. It should be based on the merits of the game.

If you are choosing to game exclusively on PC and won't get a console as well, then you have no right to be salty about not being able to play certain games. You made your choice, live with it.

@aross2004: It isn't so much a choice as a fact that games are better on my PC.

I rebuilt my PC almost 2 years ago now, I put a lot of $$$ into it, and it shows in the games that I run on it. I get at least double the graphic fidelity, at least triple the fps. So the, "choice," to play on my PC instead of one of my consoles, is like the choice between having a wonderfully prepared steak or a 1/2 plate of ground chuck.

I'm not a PC, "elitist," or anything, but it makes very little sense to experience something first in a lesser way (at full price), and then much later (also at full price) experience it a second time at full maximum settings. Let's all be honest, it has been more than hinted at from the start that this will, "eventually," come to PC. So Take Two strings PC players along for over a year, hoping they also own consoles and they will get 2 full sales from them.

So it isn't really a choice to exclude consoles (I own both Xboner and P$4), it's just a matter of playing on the best platform available. I didn't drop a ton of cash into my PC to let it sit gathering dust, and in this case, I won't be dusting it off to play RDR2 at full price either, no, I won't be giving Rockstar and Take Two a single penny.

@aross2004: Personally I am salty as hell, I don't play console, I don't own it nor want it. I do a lot more on my PC than game and my reasons are that, but even beyond that, I can't afford a PC and a console and then the crazy prices that devs charge for console games (even if PC games are getting as expensive)

So I am also salty that I couldnt enjoy this game much earlier on either and whats more I am very sure that when or even if they release RDR2 for PC it will cost the full price even if the game is over a year old already and thats rubbish imo also.

Played it on PS4 Pro, can't imagine it being much better on PC. It's an amazing game and should be brought to PC. This time it would be nice to play in first person with mouse and keyboard.

@couly: running at 60 FPS or higher with much better graphics would be A LOT better than anything the Pro can dream of. Yes, it only runs 30 FPS even on the PS4 Pro. that's horrible lol. And they even released a patch that made the graphics worse...

@Kougeru: evidence by Digital Foundry showed no graphical declination, only HDR has been fixed, 30 FPS is still good this is not Overwatch! for me switching to PC and GPU upgrade wouldnt effect the game much, 60 FPS would be good but not on this game which is a slow game overall.
